On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

He started quite well for murdawell, tricky player who likes taking guys on,could be a good signing imo HH

Has anyone asked Master Russell if he thinks he could cope with the pressure of playing for us, or in willing to spent time on the bench even when fully fit,

Maybe just maybe his answers would be no.

  3. !!Bada Bing!! on

After wasting a lot of money on Lassad and Miku in January,Russell could have been at CP for less money IMO.Hooper will go so we need another striker for sure,he knows the SPL and looks to me he has more to come.

He definately has ability and was a game changer on occasion when coming off the bench,

Still young and will get more consistent

Hard to judge Ojamaa at Motherwell. Burst onto the scene with goals and looked the real deal and then seemed to struggle for a game for the rest of his time there.

He will get better with better players I reckon and if the price and wages are right then he looks like a good signing. I don’t think the Fir Park pitch helped his game and I think the coaching from the Mullet and Kenny Black would not have helped him much as he is more of a footballer than a hammer thrower.

I think that any team that develops the boy and coaches him properly could have a gem on their hands.

Zybszek. Ojamma Is a fairly good player and in my opinion would be even better if he had some quality players around him if he is signed on a Bosman he could well be a good asset. That is my opinion on the player. H.H.

He doesn’t strike me as lacking in confidence. I think for that type of money it’s a no-brainer.

If Celtic sell Forster, Wanyama and Hooper – and a few fringe players – and add the CL money, they could put down a deposit on Cavani!

Been thinking about my earlier post, (I know, I know), but what if a team determined to get promoted to the EPL at the first chance, ie QPR, came in with a joint bid for both Stokes and Hooper, where would that leave us? I agree with PFayr, much as I love Hoops, if he is leaving, sell him to the highest bidder asap. And concentrate on keeping Stokes, signing Russell and signing another taller forward to increase options up front, dont know Balde but seems to fit that bill, as does the guy Neil was reputed to be watching in Paris.

  15. Joe Filippis Haircut on

BadaBing. The problem is you dont know until the player has played some games wither they are a good signing or as you say a waste of money. We have had our fair share of players who havnt cut the mustard at Parkhead but that is the risk you take. I like the look of this guy Balde but he is young and developing so is still a risk.H.H.

  17. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Kano 1000 on

    Afternoon folks.

Nat Know—- I do not take extensive notes!

I take copious notes– not extensive notes— and having taken those notes I normally ignore them totally because when I look back I always ask — “What is all this Sh**e?”– and then throw the notes away altogether as a waste of time.

    Anyway– re the Willie video.

    Every striker should watch that.

Left foot, Right Foot and headed goals.

Shots struck with pace, shots rolled by the keeper.

Goals where he chased the ball down and forced defenders to make mistakes, Goals where he turned defenders inside out and then slotted the ball away.

He could always find space in the box and was not afraid to strike for goal first time and in an instant.

Perfect Surface or Heavy Ground– It didn’t matter to Willie.

What the video doesn’t show is his link up play and work off the ball.

I wish we had someone of his calibre at Celtic Park today– trust me— we don’t!

A striker is all about confidence.

There are many who can play but they have to believe in themselves– believe they can score.

They have to physically and mentally dominate the defence.

How many remember Henrik and BBJ or Chris Sutton standing with two central defenders?

Henrik would run one around for ten minutes and then signal his partner to “switch”.

The defender who had just had to get on his bike for the ten minutes now had another problem. Sutton or Hartson would lean on them, back into them, bounce off them, rough them up for a bit.

Then they would switch again– and Larsson would run them again.

The effect was to always unsettle a defensive two– keep giving them something different to think about and make them uncomfortable.

Henrik Larsson grew in confidence at Celtic Park– as he says himself– that is where he became a player!!

You need front players who can gel– who can become a team within a team.

You will find that phrase in Willie’s book.

Whoever we bring in– that is what we are looking for. Not a big lone striker– but someone who can link with the rest and who has or will develop that confidence in front of goal, who will bully a defence with a footballing brain, put fear in their football boots and who will always believe that they can and will score.

  19. Thank you all for the opinions on Henrik Ojamaa play.

I have mixed feelings. I think that Legia Warsaw is League Europe group play class, but this year will be fighting for Champions Legue in play offs round. Maybe Ojamaa is for the future.

He is not free agent. Funny thing is that he was very close to our biggest rivals Lech Poznan. Spent day or two there. Motherwell rejected second offer from Lech that was 300 000 GBP. They were going to make third, final offer.

  21. !!Bada Bing!! on

Joe F- you’re right every signing is a gamble.I could see why NL thought an experienced European striker might have been very useful. The loan fee/signing on fees, wages and paying off Lassad and Miku would have been more than the asking price for Russell.

  22. !!Bada Bing!!

I would be dissapointed if we go down the loan route again. Miku lost interest within weeks.

It doesn’t always work. It cost us a lot in wages for that boy and we didn’t get much back. I was excited when we got him in but his lack of application and poor attitude was very disapointing.

Stokes will fulfill his potential this year, he has recognised his mortality and realised there is nowhere he’d rather be, watch him go, the next 3 seasons will be all about Stokes, even Sammi will wilt in the light.

Stokes will be a Celtic legend.

    Good afternoon everyone,

May I dedeuce that the lack of comments on the Croatia/Scotland game tomorrow is because you are all so overcome with excitement at the prospect that you are all unable to complete typing in your thoughts without feinting?

    Maybe not.

The nickname of the Croatian team is Vatreni – which means the Fiery Ones. I really do fear the worst for Scotland that they will be burning hot tomorrow night as they will want to overturn Belgium’s better goal difference.

Croatia is a country with the same population as Scotland but is ranked so much higher than we are so it shows that smaller countries can punch above their weight if they get the development system right.

Anyone going to the game who needs a beer, the best brand is Karlovacko. Worst is Favorite.

Enjoy if you do go to the match or on a holiday.

  29. Kojo

In this day and age does it really matter what country Neil Lennon is in? He submits his list and then goes about the club business of Celtic manager. Jonny Russell in on holiday. The cookies might be burning but not at Paradise or anywhere near it. The boy is away relaxing. Until he arrives at Derby and signs a contract he can be persuaded to make a trip to Paradise. IF Celtic want him I believe we will get him. IF Neil Lennon does not want him we won’t.

We can all think we are managers but we are not in charge of the team and watch and coach them daily.

Neil Lennon is the man in the hot seat. He will make the decision on signings and whether he is in Bathgate or Baghdad he will be able to contact someone at the club to advise the finance guys to go and get them.

Even for your standards this is a crazy statement Kojo. I usually scroll by your comments as they are a jumble of words that don’t make much sense and are way too long to read and decode. This one however caught my eye. Stay off the sauce in the sun!

  30. My problem with Johnny Russell, is that I haven’t seen him perform really well against a top class defence. He may well be a good player, but as yet he has proved nothing to suggest he could replace Hooper or Stokes

The problem with jumping in to offer a view on who the club should sign, is not knowing the full list of options. Saying we should sign anyone in those circumstances is highly speculative and uninformed
