Patrick, Moussa, Dedryck and Scott Brown

After the turmoil of Paris Saint-Germain, Celtic return to domestic duty tomorrow with the visit of Ross County. County won on the opening day of the season but have taken only one point from 15 since. They have been a soft touch for several teams in crisis recently, so in theory, this looks like a straightforward challenge for the champions.

This is the first of two games in the next five days, the other, a League Cup tie away to bottom club Dundee. After this, we go to Ibrox then Brussels. Without wanting to be overfly disrespectful to Ross County or Dundee (or, indeed, overly respectful to Newco), we should have two objectives for the next two games:

Rest limbs and minds which have been intensely exercised by international and Champions League football.

Intensely exercise limbs that have seen little action this season. Specifically Dedryck Boyata, Moussa Dembele and Patrick Roberts.

Patrick could do with a full 90 minutes. He was our best performer on Tuesday, but he’s clearly suffering from a lack of game time. Dedryck has targeted a starting place at Ibrox for months. To achieve this, he will need to play a lot of football this week.

There’s no guarantee Moussa would dislodge Leigh Griffiths from the line-up at Ibrox, even if fully fit, but the Champions League game away to Anderlecht is a different tie. This has to be his target, which leaves little time to build his sharpness.

Perhaps most importantly of all, I would rest Scott Brown tomorrow. The games ahead are simply too important to have images of a fatigued Scott fresh in the mind. Brendan should also consider a place for Lustig, Armstrong and Tierney on the bench.

Win tickets for Ibrox

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have given us two tickets for the visit to Ibrox on 23 September to raffle for Mary’s Meals. You know the script:

Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat a school meal each day because of the money raised by CQN’ers.

You are improving lives, educating a generation in some of the most deprived locations in the world. School attendance has increased an average of 30%, literacy and numeracy skills improve. Life-long opportunities are enhanced.

To enter the raffle, answer this question:

Which Belgian team will Celtic face in this season’s Champions League?

Please donate a minimum of £5 to this MyDonate page. Then forward your confirmation email with your answer in the SUBJECT LINE to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Many thanks to you and Intelligent Car Leasing.

  1. Been reading back. Thanks Macjay. I usually scroll by but you have been absolutely brilliant today. It’s a while since CQN has amused me so much.

    Thank you.

  6. Good evening, friends.

Tomorrow we are GOING FOR 55. This is an incredible incentive.

Brendan Rodgers has now been at the Club for 14 months. He has not yet lost a single domestic fixture!

Of course the unbeaten domestic run began on the last day of 2015-16 when Ronny’s Bhoys hammered Motherwell 7 – 0 (after losing the previous midweek to St Johnstone).

Here’s the full breakdown of the current 54-game unbeaten run:

    2015-16 – 1 last day league win

2016-17 unbeaten in 38 league games, 4 League Cup games and 5 Scottish Cup games – 47 in total

2017-18 so far – unbeaten in 5 league games and 1 league cup game – 6 in total

    There’s yer 54!

  7. Gene. Lived in Leuven for four years…in those days the double languages of Flemish and French were prevalent in the town..so I call it Louvain.

Never saw the local team though I passed the ground often on the way to the Uni sportsground. So I was surprised to see that they play in Green and white. Might have an interest in them now. Great post though and interesting what is happening there. Will the Asian investors be coming for us soon?

  8. An early post referenced the occasion when a young lad ran onto the pitch the night Celtic beat AC Milan in the Champions League and tapped the Milan Keeper on the shoulder and who subsequently rolled around like a wounded deer. Celtic expected tough censure from EUFA but on this occasion thanks to John Delaney the ROIrl football chief who also held a big position with EUFA, they went easy on Celtic.

  9. And as for tonight’s Glasgow Derby I do think that The Jags are attractively overpriced. I base that thought having had a look at their fixtures so far. They have already faced the top 3 (Celtic and Aberdeen at home and a visit to St Johnstone) as well as having had a trip to Easter Road. Their solitary point was away to Ross County. Arguably (in fact, not arguably at all!) tonight is their easiest home tie so far!!

Triggers Broom can of course go top with a 4 – 0 win (could they, aye?). They are where they are without yet having faced any of the top 3. Trips to Motherwell and Ross County and home games against Hibs, Hearts and bottom club Dundee.

TBFC may well win tonight. But Thistle certainly aren’t 6/1 outsiders!

Just into Glasgow, after a nice visit with the family, and saw your post. Won’t be able to take you up on your very kind offer, but hope you will be joining CRC and I (and whoever else is able to come along) for a drink after the game!

  11. STV reporting that IF Sevco win tonight they will go top of the league. They do not mention they would have to win by five clear goals. They are so desperate for a good news story for the Silly Billy’s.

  12. No doubt the young lad did wrong . And no doubt he will be taken to task when next up at court , And so he should be . But can I ask what was the sentence imposed on the goon that approached broony at snake mountain , Equal punishment for equal crime , and the ibpox invader got banned for life , how lucky can you get .

  13. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Roy Hodgson reckons he can keep Palace up.

Would be a minor miracle. Four points from safety and only 102 points to play for…..

  14. Now, I know folk get tetchy about these matters on here but should I or should I not provide any updates (goals and major incidents only!) from the game at Firhill tonight? Get yer votes in before kick off and I’ll go with the majority decision!

I love Friday Night Football. So I invariably watch no matter who is playing. Daft wee bets on tonight to give it an added interest – 30 shillings on a treble of (at least) 3 goals, 4 cards and 11 corners. And another 30 bob on the Jolly Jags.
