Pawns cinch and the proxy war

220

The dispute Newco have with the Scottish Professional Football League over their sponsorship deal with car retailer cinch might look a bit ridiculous.  The club are refusing to display SPFL sponsor logos and, apparently, refused to permit their manager to be interviewed by BT Sport unless the broadcaster taped over the logos at Motherwell on Saturday.

It’s an odd hill on which to stand, even after considering that cinch are direct competitors to the Newco chairman’s car retailer business. cinch will continue to advertise and gain market share at the expense of traditional retailers, the chairman is called Park, not Canute.

It makes more sense if you consider Newco want to replace SPFL CEO Neil Doncaster with a more compliant individual, think a 21st century Jim Farry.  If they can beat the SPFL in the courts, they can push for Doncaster’s removal with some authority. For this, any small hill will be sufficient.

This is a proxy war with the governance of our game is the real tide.

  1. Villareal very weak.Couple of good chances to make Allison work, but no real commitment.Liverpool winning 90 % of second balls.Very poor.

And yet, I heard today that the ViaPlay deal, negotiated by UEFA in some form, will not include England games.

To be fair to the FA, virtually every England game is available on terrestial tv, certainly the home ones. Unlike the SFA.

Yeah I’m aware they have a considerable fan base here, but the support in loyalist Belfast is massive. For me,one team and one team only,Celtic football club.

  4. My local SF rep got in hot water some weeks ago when historical tweets in which she referred to Liverpool as ‘huns’ came to light.

I have to admit that in my own personal experience, they are the team for loyalists, more so than Chelsea.

Completely irrelevant but there we go.

Villarreal looked every bit a 7th placed side in La liga. I hope City go through because they’re the only side that will give Liverpool a game.

“I do not know the rules and mechanics of how the SPFL arrange league sponsorship but I thought I read somewhere that the SPFL requested a copy of sevco’s contract with Park ,does such a contract exist ?”

    —–

Verbal contracts are just as valid as written – so maybe no actual written agreement.

    ——

“I would find it strange if Park was not aware of the deal with Cinch from the outset and if the SPFL knew of his objections but carried on regardless.”

    —–

Perhaps the SPFL felt it could conclude deals on behalf of all members without referring back individually

    —-

“After witnessing the multitude of court cases involving broken contracts by sevco 2012 ,are we really to believe the SPFL board and the other clubs thought sevco would just shrug their shoulders and say Ach ok guys it’s for the good of Scottish football”

    —–

I don’t think anyone would take that approach

    —–

“No sorry I smell a rat and I am inclined to agree with some others that it is sevco’s way of trying to get more influence in the SPFL hierarchy”.

    —–

As I posted before, I believe that Ibrox has an agenda to ‘wrestle-back’ more control over the authorities – I don’t think the ‘cinch’ fiasco is part of that agenda.

    —–

We agree to disagree – I suppose someone will have to ‘blink first’…..who will it be?

One thing is for sure, it will need to be fixed soon – the deal has another five years to run.

My view? – the deal will carry on at a reduced rate and Ibrox with Ibrox given an exemption and consequently receive no share.

Only danger is it could lead to a precedence and, who knows maybe next up would be (the same club) opting out of the SPFL TV deal and trying to sell its own TV rights.

  7. I actually don’t think the outcome tomorrow will have any bearing on Sunday.

No matter the score they will either have a tough game to play on next Thursday which will be their biggest game of the season, or be all but out with the dream ended.

Either way the focus will not be as it was at the cup semi final. It will not be treating this game as the biggest of the season so far which was what they do then.

We, on the other hand, will be laser focused all week. With 2 potential mid to front teams who could play. We will want to atone for 2 weeks ago.

3 nil half time and 7 nil full time would be so sweet. I would take any win though.

I went to school in Belfast during the 70’s and Nationalists didn’t really support Liverpool (one good mate supported Everton). I think the rash of players from the R of I changed that a lot. Celtic were the number one team. Leeds were popular, and I think that was mainly due to Johnny Giles. Now, most of my friends follow either Liverpool or Man U. Sadly, Celtic have virtually slipped off the radar.

  9. Before I hit the scratcher, I’ll say again……

if we consistently call out the differing standards that our playing staff are subjected to by The Dallas Kowboys, especially when we win, perhaps we’ll be able to negate the worst of Cheatin’ and Midden…………..

Liverpool, like Celtic, have millions of supporters all over the world, but we are expected to despise them because a few dozen Belfast orangemen support them.

Was thinking about the 1998 season coincidences too after the semi final. Hoping for the same conclusions as far as destiny of League title and Scottish Cup this term.

However we didn’t win 2-1 at Ibrox in the Jansen season. Both visits there were defeats. The second one coming a week after the semi final loss. In between we had an away league win at a tricky ground – Rugby Park. Hope that is not an omen for Sunday.

We only beat Rangers once in 5 attempts that season. 3 defeats and a draw in the others. I’d be happy enough with a draw this week

Being a worrier there is another parallel that I hope does not come to pass. We won 2-1 at ibrox in 2005 and looked certainties for the title. Instead we threw it away on the last day in a game v Motherwell while Rangers were winning in Edinburgh. Guess who we have got, and where Rangers are on the last day this year!

AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE FFS……….

    From the BBc…

    Is quadruple dream on?

Manchester United, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Celtic, Ajax and PSV have all won the treble of European Cup, league title and domestic cup.

But Liverpool – who have already won the Carabao Cup – are still in the running for an unprecedented quadruple.

“That’s got to be the aim,” said former England defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport.

“They are going to set themselves the target. If they achieve it, they’re immortal, they are above anyone that has played the game in this country.

SAHB were one of the BEST LIVE Bands that I ever saw. at times during their shows/gigs…it was like a ” Cabaret” show.

The 2nd time that I went to se them it was in Hamilton Town Hall. There was only 450/50 Punters there. I was in the front row with my Burd and my mate etc and we had a ” Carry Oot” on the floor next to us. As some point, ALEX jumped OFF STAGE during a song and He and I were ” JIVING” with each other in the aisle as the Band played on.

Before they finished the song, ALEX spotted MY ” Carry Oot”…and decided to take a few swigs of my Can of Beer.

Last night I posted about Liverpool social clubs in loyalist areas of Belfast and their well being because the team they lend their support to won at home.A poster came on ‘citing a few dozen Belfast orangemen’ and using the word despise and ‘shoving that bigotted (sic) nonsense where the sun blah ,blah. There are more than a few Belfast orangemen that follow L’pool that I can assure him,and to despise that football club because of the aforementioned loyal brethren, was not my reason for highlighting the social club folk,I could not give a hoot about any English football team,or any other football, for that matter. One team for me as I stated last night.Off out for a while, school run to be precise.

    …………………….

I sometimes met most of the Lisbon Lions over years. I would ask them to name the SIX Trophies that Celtic WON in season 1966/61 ?

They would name the FIVE that you stated above, but usually they would forget the SIXTH Trophy that they Bhoys won. The SIXTH ( 6th) Trophy that Celtic won that season included the DI STEPHANIO Trophy after Celtic beat Real Madrid 1-0 in their Bernebeau Stadium, thanks to Bobby Lennoxs winner.

The late, great MATT MCGHINN sang about it in his Song/Record… ” The Bhoys from Lisbon”. In THAT Recording…..Matt sings about..” TROPHY NUMBER SIX (6)” .

” We’re the Bhoys who shook up Lisbon,

We showed Inter some of our tricks,

    In the year of 67,

    Sure of Trophy NUMBER SIX”.
