Players will return like walking petri dishes

222

News that our Scottish football’s star player tested positive for Covid a day after travelling to meet the France Under-23 squad, is an indication of what we are in for.  Odsonne Edouard and pretty much all other professional footballers are from a demographic that is immune to the worst excesses of the disease, but it will continue to infect players for the remainder of the season.  Celtic, and all clubs, will be required to utilise their squads like never before.

Beyond our worry for Odsonne’s health, the next concern is for the rest of the squad.  Odsonne played for Celtic on Sunday and tested positive in France on Tuesday.  The club will have a nervous few days ahead while the incubation period of a possible transmission on Sunday expires.

It is more likely the player contracted the disease while travelling.  If so, the short-term consequences for Celtic are less, but this indicates the risks we can expect when players mix with the public on commercial flights.  When Celtic or any national team travels, they do so on private charters, within their own ‘bubble’.  But players who live abroad need to use public transport to get back home.

From Azerbaijan to Iceland, ‘European’ players will cross-fertilise with fellow travellers and each other.  When they return to their clubs at the end of next week, most having attended three fixtures, they will be walking petri dishes.  Some will have picked up colds and flus, then isolate, due to these symptoms, but Odsonne will not be the last positive test.

These international fixtures are like a big mumps party, seeding populations with a deadly cargo through largely asymptomatic agents.  Not your best work, Uefa.

A reminder to us all, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, keep your distance, wear a mask.  It does not matter what age you are, you don’t want this disease.

  1. Who decides who was in close contact with whom and how do they do it?

Do they rely on tehnology or on people being entirely honest and candid about who they have been in touch with?

Also, now that shaking hands is no longer acceptable how is a Brother to recognise a fellow Brother?

Good morning all from Govanhill. If the huns had as many players called up for international duty as us we all know they would not have left Glasgow. Every little helps from the SFA.

From my own experience contact trace apps are better than nothing but on the other hand rely on Bluetooth technology, well the Irish one does. This is great for figuring out where you were for a period and for how long; sitting/standing beside someone for period who then tests positive. The difficulty with it is that firstly it’s not millimetre accurate, secondly it can’t differentiate between indoor or outdoor, it can’t’ tell if you are ‘beside’ someone but in fact have a glass barrier between you. My own experience is this; my app told me that I had been in close contact with a positive case and needed to be tested. I was tested and found to be negative, I know who the positive test was and where it happened. The only difficulty was it was outside, I saw the person who was positive (they didn’t know this at the time) said hello from a distance of 10 metres and they stayed that distance away from me for the entire period. The other issue is this there were three other people who stood much closer to her for the same period, all had their apps, all had their phones with them and none of them was identified as a close contact.

I haven’t written the above to debunk the app, the importance of safe distancing, hand washing and wearing a mask but technology is a help but it’s not infallible, as many trying log on to this site will testify! This may explain how you could be identified as a close contact when in fact you’re not.

I believe the Huns have more players on international duty than us this week and further afield.

  6. It is up to the players to withdraw from international duty, citing that they feel unsafe and not up to the club to do it

  7. Looks like the isolation decision came from a simple call to Armstrong asking who he had been in contact with, rather than a tracing app.

If Christie/Tierney following distancing guidelines then I suspect there’s additional context which might force a rethink. This one’s got a few miles to run.

Seems like a fair point. It would, I guess, require quite a few players to withdraw, though. Can you imagine the MSSM inspired `hate mail` any Celtic players who chose that option would get?

Hun players, on the other hand, would be awarded medals for bravery :-)

It’s false to say Sevco don’t have any players on international duty – check the facts…

The only thing that interests me about international football is the return of our players injury free…2 players down already (virus not injury) its not a good start to the week

What are the facts? ie How many do they have on International duty currently?

    Thanks.

Ernie – very astute question re: contact.

I’d just assumed 3 guys who used to play together were in proximity (2½ metres) for 15 minutes and the app picked this up.

MacPhail Bhoy – very informative response.

SonsofErin – intriguing. Where have you heard that this was based on Armstrong’s recollections rather than app data?

If confirmed, this makes an absolute mockery of SFA protocols and would CLEARLY prompt serious questions (which Arsenal should lead on).

    Hail hail

    Keep The Faith

  13. B2B – Videocelts article, specifically –

Rather than use any tracking equipment to work out close contacts of Armstrong it seems that Lothian Health Protection Team phoned the Southampton player and decided that Tierney and Christie had to go into self-isolation.

I agree, we”re lucky there’s also an Arsenal player involved. If the players followed all SFA protocols, which are proved to fall short of the govt protocols, then Celtic would have every reason to pull McGregor and Taylor out of the squad.

Will be very interesting to see what team and formation NFL picks for the “rangers” match will need to wait and see who is available and what system he deploys.

  16. The rules state, you cannot be in the company of someone with Covid more than 15 minutes.Even with social distancing.Thats why pubs are closed for deep cleans, and anyone in the pub at that time an infection was reported, are contacted to isolate for 14 days.Very straightforward.

The Huns have plenty of players on International duty.Already Helander injured and Barisic, has problem.

As with Christie not celebrating, sometimes facts get in the way of a good conspiracy.

Some talk of Eddy being able to play next week if he has no symptoms. Not sure about that.Dont think he will meet the 14 day rule.

  17. Celtic cannot pull players from the Scotland squad, nor can they withold players from the squad.I think then, that the said players must miss a certain amount of club games.Probably repercussions against the club as well.

Did THE CARDIGAN not withdraw 5 players from a scotland squad in the same week they were to play CELTIC on the saturday.

  20. Favorite Uncle,

Dont remember, but I know Souness was very guilty of it.Put it down to injuries.Dont think its possible now,as players must report to be assessed by National Doctors.Hence Biton with Israel.

For the record, off top of my head,Hun players on International duty,

    Goalkeeper,Ryan Jack ,Jordan Jones,Steve Davis,Helander,Barisic,might be others like,Kamara ,Morelos,Itten,not sure,but they have a few away.

  21. true or not true, i dont know but three players from different teams socializing in one room, isnt exactly ‘ following the rules’ . Seems to me that this season will be called off sooner or later.. I still think our squad is strong enough to hump them no matter who we play.

best wishes to all the people that are sick, this horrid disease. annus horriblus, indeed

    =======================

Hi pal – the 14 day rule is, I think, for ‘contacts’ of known positive cases, rather than the cases themselves. The logic behind that is that by the time you are testing positive, you have had the disease for a period of time (so Eddie may have effectively been 5 days into a 14-day cycle). The new contacts, however, may just be infected from the positive case – so are at day 1 if you like. They then need to isolate to see whether the develop the disease over that period.

No saying I agree with what’s happened – just the thinking behind why Eddie (a known positive for a period of time) might be available and Ryan (only recently exposed to a positive) might not.

I don’t know an awful lot about it – have only spoken briefly to some involved in Test & Protect. I think a lot of it does come down to personal reporting (by SA in this case) and then how that is interpreted by the T&P team, who will be working to definitions of ‘close contact’.

Suspect Ryan’s argument would be that his actual experience would not meet the definition of a ‘close contact’. Probably goes back to SFA protocols.

Basically, I can see only four potential scenarios here:

    1. Ryan has not followed the SFA protocols to the letter – he said he has, so it is now incumbent on the SFA to explain where his actions fell short of those protocols, or…

    2. there was an inaccurate representation by SA to Test & Protect about the level and nature of his contacts – the laddie isn’t a daftie, so I expect he can clearly explain the circumstance of any interactions he had with people in the Scotland party, including with Ryan and KT, or…

    3. there is a misinterpretation by Test & Protect of what SA has reported to them – I wouldn’t be pointing any fingers at a very hard-pressed group of people doing an increasingly-busy job, or…

    4. following the SFA Protocols does not guarantee that players do not fall-foul of the Test & Protect definition of ‘close contact’ – again, it is incumbent on the SFA to explain whether their Protocols fall short of the direction it should give to everyone in the party to ensure they do breach the T&P rules that would have them categorised as a ‘close contact’ of an infected individual

I can’t think of any other potential explanation, although I accept there may be one or two others.

The SFA need to give a clear explanation related to scenarios 1. and 4. – Celtic should be privately requiring this then, if not forthcoming, doing so publicly.

The file is said to contain colour pictures showing what appears to be a 100ft spacecraft hovering over Calvine, Perthshire, in 1990.

The alleged snaps were taken by two hikers in the area who saw the diamond shaped aircraft speed off into the distance after RAF jets were scrambled to the area.
