Playing against Celtic, Fit and Proper moment ahead, crystal balls

1108

The second half last night will be remember for the fact that right back Mikael Lustig came within the width of the crossbar of scoring a hat-trick, while left back Emilio Izaguirre also hit the crossbar – and was caught offside in the centre forward position.  The movement and energy levels required for this type of performance cannot be overestimated.

Adam Matthews’ goal on Saturday, when he burst a lung to cover half the field and get on the end of a move as it developed on the opposite wing, is another example of how physically taxing playing for Celtic is right now.  And just as importantly, how taxing it is to play against them.

Motherwell competed as best they could before hitting the wall and capitulating.

Kano

I knew the minutes’ applause for Kano was coming last night, but it was a hard moment nonetheless. Sannabhoy read a letter at halftime from Martin’s wife, Carolyn, explaining the family’s appreciation for what the Celtic family did for them.

It’s appropriate for us to return our respect to Kano’s family, and to Sannabhoy and his Kano Foundation colleagues. They got the charity work ball rolling for so many of us. They gave us the opportunity to aspire to become better people.

There’s a link at the bottom of the article to sign-up for CQN11, where the work to build another school kitchen in Malawi goes on. You are part of an incredible community. Be there.

Just a brief note on Honest Dave King’s recent claims.  He will become a director of newco Rangers in the event the forthcoming EGM votes him so.  I’ve no doubt he will be able to find a NomAd to work with him, not all have the same standards, allowing the company to retain its listed status with him as a director.

It is also true that the SFA cannot stop him becoming a director.  They do not have a Fit and Proper test, they have fit and proper criteria, which directorial appointments are measured against after they are appointed.

Despite all we’ve seen in come out of Hampden over the last few years, I would be amazed if the SFA board approved a tax convict and former director of a club which broke tax law, player registration rules and went into liquidation.  It’s not even a remotely tenable suggestion.

After the event, the SFA would be in a position to penalise newco Rangers – most probably through a fine – and instruct them to dismiss King.  King, of course, has all the humility and self-awareness required to apologise and resign without a fuss.  There’s no way he would use his well-marshalled media campaign to try what Craig Whyte and Charles Green did before him – play to the gallery, blame all his ills on an ‘anti-Rangers’ conspiracy.

Note how the media campaign is rolling out King comment and press releases as definitive news, not subjective claims.  Note also that Easdale press releases are being covered by the media, but that pantomime-hate figure, Jack Irvine, is being attributed as the source.

Note that Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias are saying nothing.  They’re just going about their business.  You don’t need crystal balls to see how this one is going to end.

CQN11 St Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance is on Friday 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park. The focus of an excellent night’s entertainment will be funding the construction of a kitchen at Chibwata Primary School in Malawi, for Mary’s Meals.

  2. This past week i’ve watched DU V Hamilton last night St. Mirren v DU

Really good entertaining games with no shortage of skill, t. Mirren are NOT getting relegated, Gary Teale has some cracking players there. Their centre forward McLean is very handy, scored a very skillful goal.

Robin Hood will never ask Peter Lawwell to join his particular robbing gang.

Peter Lawwell said Celtic “aim” to come out of every transfer window stronger. His words were a clear statement of intent, unfortunately an intent that was never made manifest.

To aim once and miss is excusable, to aim twice and miss is forgivable, to aim thrice and miss might suggest you don’t have the necessary skills, to do it a fourth time should ring loud alarm bells, to do it a fifth ot sixth time, well, like I said, he ain’t gonna get into Robin’s gang.

James McCarthy did not sign for Celtic because Peter Lawwell was told he could not match Hamilton’s asking price, or so I am told by the man who was there when the call was made. It had nothing to do with the boys wage demands, or so I am told.

I agree but 2m and small wages is peanuts to these epl teams.

For us its an ideal way to get good players with only paying a signing on fee and good wages.

This fella has never stood out when iv seen us play hamilton to be honest so i dont know if hes worth 200k or 2m.

Looks to me like Henderson has taken a stretch in the last 9 months or so. If he can add top level athletism to his game he has tremendous potential.

PS If I was of a Machiavellian nature and I wanted to hurt a particular political party, maybe just out of meanness, maybe I might pretend to be an extreme uber-obnoxious trumpet coming out ‘for’ the political party I was trying to hurt.

Couldn’t agree more. This how this morning’s blog read to me too.

As soon as “Alfie” appears so do certain others using it to gather attention for their “cause” I’ve stopped posting and I’m rarely even lurking because the blog I’m reading is about to(some might say has started) go into full force general election campaigning. You can see that Alfie and his opposite numbers rarely post independent of each other. One goes off the blog so do the others.

On the football front, I’ve backed the different direction from Ronny from the start. Glad to see our movement and energy improving, gradually introduce better quality and you’ve got a team people don’t want to face. Any of our future opposition watching Celtic last night won’t be feeling comfortable, which I like- it starts well before the Tunnel.

  14. jfh,

If that’s Guidetti’s choice, I’m with you, I think the bhoy Thompson has shown enough to merit a wee run.

    Mullet…,

4% eh! sack the board. Though I’m not talking about the last year, it has been a very deliberate strategy to give supporters less for our money.

  15. If ‘downsizing’ means we don’t become zombies and continue to win titles whilst entertaining the fans that’s fine with me.

With our current financial limitations in comparison with others clubs of a similar stature, it is a reality that there will be peaks and troughs as we go through the years. We have to accept this.

Also one other point. The stronger Scottish football becomes the stronger we will get, and vice versa. We should absolutely welcome the challenge.

The fact there is competition simply shows how far Celtic have downsized, and that IMO is a disgrace.

How on earth have Celtic downsized – they spend more on football operations year on year?

Like all of your postings, it is difficult to argue because you NEVER produce any evidence for your opinions and rants.

I’ve always thought it bit of a myth that the Celtc-Deadclub fixture was the fiercest in world football. From what I’ve read and watched on the likes of YouTube, the Boca-River and Gala-Fenerbahce games can make the Glasgow derby look like a tea party, and there are plenty others too. Any in Italy you’d say was worse?

Having said that, this upcoming game could well blow my opinion right out the window.

  24. Kitalba @ 13.14

First of all, I like and back the suggestion about naming a Malawi kitchen after Martin Kane if that is possible.

Secondly, I am glad that you, at least, agree with me that the quote was clearly an aspiration rather than a promise. Any player or CEO or person who promises to be better, stronger, or more guaranteed of winning is delusional. The best you can do is to strive to improve as much as you can and hope that it will be good enough to beat your opponent(s).

We all try to be better people, better workers, better fathers/husbands or mothers/wives. We can never guarantee to do so. We have good days and bad days. I don’t know about you but I can not claim to live up to the dictum that “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better”. That was originally developed as an auto suggestion for self-improvement and psychotherapy. If I was only allowed one, two or three setbacks on the way to self improvement, then I doubt I would last a week. Progress is not ever linear and ever upwards.

I don’t doubt that we missed out on a decent player in James McCarthy. I am even parochially disappointed that we missed out on him as a Castlemilk boy who played in the same school team as my nephew. However for every McCarthy suggestion there were another 20 telling us to buy players who were “no-brainers” who went on to further obscurity (James McFadden, John Sutton, Margaro Gomis)

We do have limited spending power in a world where Stoke, Newcastle and Swansea are getting vast unearned income from TV that we are not gifted. In a world where Sutton, Lennon and Hartson would fetch 3 or 4 times what we paid for them 14 years ago. £5m now gets you Brett Assombalonga- is he really any better than Pukki or our other failures?

There is a downsize. It is not all deliberate downsizing- some of it is forced upon us as we live in this inflated market. A place where Southampton, Swansea and Norwich can pay big bucks to our best players. Can outbid and outpay us. They feed upon us and Man U, Liverpool and Spain feed upon them.

I have said before and, I repeat, that even if you removed every over paid and over-bonused executive and boardroom member at CP, it would not change our position in that world transfer market. I think they can do a helluva lot more in defence of our support but I do not see any way past the reality that there will be more Pukkis, Baldes, Brozeks and Fridjohnsons in our future trading. Every club has bad buys wasting away in the reserves or loaned out. The trick is to make as few mistakes as you honestly can but, when you are operating in the shallow end of the transfer pond, you will find more frogs than drunken princes who just need sobered up before they come good again.

It is concerning but then I look at the likes of Aberdeen, in the doldrums for such a long time yet they make a cup final and bring 40k – it shows the passion for football runs deep where our bigger, established clubs exist and on the pitch success will bring them out. We need to do more to bring fans out more regularly of course.

We just have to hope the SKY/EPL juggernaut is halted in its tracks sooner rather than later.

We also have to remember that we are not alone in feeling marginalised by whats going on down the road, the rest of Europe is feeling the effects and we should be able to use that to our advantage by identifying common interests.

I would love it if the next big project for the internet bampots was an orchestrated campaign to put a dent in the Sky/EPL bandwagon. It is surely unsustainable. Look at the Leeds and Blackburns of this world… they are just postponing agony for another day.

Yes sir it is blatantly obvious they are promoting King over Ashley and the current board.

It is also blatantly obvious they are protecting Mc Coist (for some future use no doubt) after Green revealed he refused to take a pay cut when they went to the bottom.

Last night Keevins et al poo pooed their lack of coverage of this when asked on Superscoreboard by a lady called Erin.

Apparently according to them they cant talk to Mc Coist because of the rules pertaining to his garden leave !

Of course his refusal to take a cut was under Greens administration nothing to do with the present regime, why cant they just do their job and get a no comment comment from Mc Coist
