I spoke to a serial divorcee some years ago and he suggested that after one bad marriage, you’re more likely to plunge headfirst into another, then another, than your average person, despite all the warning signs.
He was driven by a need to put things right in his life. Regretful of lost time, he wanted to get on with finding a secure, lasting, future relationship.
Parma were a tiny club for most of their existence, occupying the fourth tier of Italian football, but they rose inextricably to become one of the top clubs in Europe. When Rangers knocked them out of the Champions League qualifiers in the 90s, they were sixth top seed in the Uefa rankings. When the money dried up and insolvency grabbed them a few years ago it must have been hard to accept their place – a club with little substance going for it, but with fans expecting glory.
News this week that after liquidation a newco Parma would kick off at the bottom tier of the professional game in Italy is a morality tale. Just as my pal, the divorcee, was compelled to plunge into a ‘lasting and successful’ relationship at the first opportunity, few people who pick up the pieces of insolvent football clubs seem to be blessed with pragmatic expectations. A second, even more damaging liquidation, haunts in the shadows.

Brilliant. Lol
Yip—top 10.
Auldheid. That policy performed in 2000 would have meant I maybe would have gone to Spain in 2003 but only on holiday

How much do you think a player that would increase chances of qualifying would cost over a 3 year contract?
I’m talking a seasoned pro who has proved himself at CL or EL level?
How many would we need given injuries?
If the cost depended on CL entry every year to cover then we would be adopting the business strategy of our dear departed foes in blue.
Not for me. It’s not for me to risk my kids heritage.
What I would hope for is that over a period of time we do qualify each year under existing policy, but build up reserves to cover the occasional failure to qualify every year so that we can take that risk.
We are certainly in a good position to build up that reserve starting this season.

That visit to Spain in 2003 was based on an unsustainable spend and caused the change to the existing one.
Do the sums.
Paul,
You forgot to say that Parma in the bottom tier will lead to a slow, lingering death for Italian football :-)
Why indulge SnydayTim?
Year upon year the same negativity.
Imagine how bad he would be if we’re Sevconian!

Someone posted a link to the Parma tale of woe a few days back.
Wow. A real eye-opener.
Absolutely shameful behaviour from everyone charged with the well-being of that club.

Thanks Syd,
So you’re saying, I think, that if we buy £6M of talent ahead of ECL Qualifiers, without selling anyone, and we get papped out, PL’s done his bit, and the buck stops with Ronny?
I’d say that’s reasonable.
Problem with Celtic and player sales is that without ECL, transfer fees pay the running costs. With ECL, life is entirely different. The clever bit is squaring that challenge.
I think – for what it’s worth – that there’s a strong 1st team group at the club just now, but would very much like to see some talent at centre forward added.
I’m figuring Virgil will be offski at the end of August, and so we need a further CB too.
That, and of course, the annual forlorn ‘cover for left back’.
I’d go £3M on a striker immediately, another Boyata type, and a decent prospect for left back. That, together with the Boyata fee, covers the £6M, although I would expect the 2nd CB only when Virgil skyes the park, which we expect will be after the ECL denouement.
Problem with that of course, is a £3M striker isn’t getting us a Chris Sutton etc. I see Stoke signed Joselu from Hannover for £8M this summer. Guy’s 25 years old, good pedigree in Spain, and has scored 29 goals in 90 games in 3 seasons, 10 in 32 this season. Middle of the road costs £8M.
Southampton have just paid £7M for Juanmi, 22 years old, 8 goals in 38 games for Malaga last season. See above.
Vossen, who we’re not going to sign, has done nothing since his seriously talented Genk teammates left. Middlesboro in the Championship declined to exercise their £2.5M option on him after half a dozen goals in a loan season.
It’s the box office position in any team, and few are stars, it seems. Let’s see what we come up with, bit ‘non-scoring’ seems to be the default status for strikers these days outside of the elite.
Aside: I’m looking forward to the emergence of Bitton, Armstrong and GMS this season, the further development of Griffiths, and to taking a look at Boyata.
I expect wee Henderson will show up a little more, Fisher likewise, and perhaps Ronny will figure out how to use Rogic. Or not.
A fit Lustig would be a Mark Hateley cliché.
We’ll see.
