Referees: we can only shine a light

415

I doubt very much if there was a conspiracy between referees in Scottish football over the weekend, that does not happen.  They cross the white line making their own decisions.

Whether they are just terrible, compromised, or perform well in difficult conditions, is not the consequence of some grand plan.  In my view, they are not good enough to do the tasks required and on Sunday inhibited Celtic’s chances of winning the title.

They will close ranks this week, they always do. All we can do is continue to shine a light.

  1. every celtic game is managed by the refereeing fraternity. unless the board speak out officially this will continue, why would they stop?

  2. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

The most obvious explanation is institutional bias, much as the Met Police acknowledged institutional racism after the Stephen Lawrence murder.

The culture around refereeing is very hunnish. When I played refereering attracted a lot of cops. That whole authority/ hierarchy culture tends to align well with the hun world view. Most refs are huns, especially at the top level. If you want to get on, you have to fit in. Refereeing the huns harshly or even fairly is not fitting in. Refereeing Celtic harshly/ unfairly most certainly is.

  3. It doesn’t even need a conspiracy in the sense of meeting and discussing. All it needs is a general awareness amongst a group of officials of what is financially at stake this season for Rangers*

  4. Article nearly all wrong.

You are right Paul they are terrible, but there can be no doubt that there is cheating going on.

It has been proved on numerous occasions over the years.

  5. I agree that referees do not have a Friday night ‘conclave’ to stitch up the weekend games.

However, there is undoubtedly a culture within refereeing and new recruits subconsciously submit to this culture.

They know, and have seen, the impact of incorrect decisions v sevco. Likewise versus Celtic.

I have worked in a number of large and medium sized firms. Every one had its own culture.

    Each one was different.

    Scottish sports media is similar.

It’s remarkable to see many organisations put in processes and training to guard against unconscious or sub conscious bias whilst reading that both Scottish sports journalism and refereeing are somehow untouched by this.

    Arrogance

  6. Keeping our mouth shut is not an option in my opinion.

Where would the world be without people speaking out against Racism, cheating, nepotism etc.. Oh that’s right we would be in Scotland…

    Despicable in 2021.

Spineless and gutless are our board

  7. Given what we’ve seen regarding the awarding of UEFA licenses and the outcome of the Nimmo Smith investigation, I’ve no doubt there’s a conspiracy.

  10. If there is no accountability, then there will be no consequences and therefore no change.

Maybe we should knock football in the head.

  12. There are more Rangers “inclined” referees , that’s not in dispute.

When it comes to the 49/51 call your instinct will always give it to the team you favour.

The answer is straightforward. Don’t deploy referees with Rangers/Celtic leaning to cover Rangers or Celtic games. If you cant find enough, bring in neutral refs from other countries

Bizarre post, say nothing back of the bus nonsense.

Celtic have been refereed differently, and well you know it poor Ange thinks he’s here for a game of football.

Corrupt to the core, the fix is in for the automatic CL £40M next year, no red cards since 2019, no conspiracy?

i suppose the get out clause could be that was a different club he supported.

  16. dont often criticise the host, but that is a weak weak calamero type acceptance. poor article.

  17. Andy Patons Mullet on

Think of all the after dinner speeches attended / heard. how many did the old referees alight to having a Celtic persuasion? I cannot think of one. ever, and went to many over last 20 odd years.

The authorities and officials in scotland always have and always will favour der hun. And that’s why they won’t copy the English FA with the declaration of what team the official supported

The only time the game will be fair is when foreign refs are utilised. But then that would be the admittance that the problem exists…

  18. most penalties given in a season,

penalties against only given once league was over

    no sending offs

multi opponents sent off over the same time.

    least fouls against

    hiding in plain sight.

declare the referees teams and memberships of associations.

  19. The individuals may not be involved in a conspiracy but they operate in a corrupt system.

There is no accountability or scrutiny of their individual bias.

The system benefits one team and the football authorities and the media are silent / content with this.

Some simply statistically analysis would easily highlight the issue – penalties awarded for and opponents red cards. No journalists will ever run with it.

  20. offisde goals given,

  21. Garngad to Croy on

Aye can you imagine VAR ? 5 or 6 cheatin hun Bassa’s instead of the 4 we have now and we will be paying their wages !

  22. Ross Jack summed the situation up when he said ” Pourteous gave the referee a decision to make”

I think everyone who isn’t playing for deadco need to understand that.

I said during the game on Sunday that the Aberdeen right back had decided that his best defence

against Jota was to turn his back, shield the ball and wait for the challenge. He did and Madden obliged

to the point he booked Jota for persistant fouling. At the time I said that Jota needs to wise up as everyone

does. They will cheat the way Madden did on Sunday, drip feed of nonsense fouls but it did no good, we still

won. But what Porteous did just handed 3 points to deadco. Please everyone else wise up.

  23. Roofe goal looked at least a yard offside as well.

VAR – I am for it, at least if the game is live or tv footage then it will be harder for these cheating cnuts and they will get found out quicker.

As someone says put the running of VAR out to tender.

  24. AN DÚN

it helps Hibs or any other team as a completely neutral ref will not instinctively make margin calls in favour of his team

Markiebhoy did Lundstrem not give the referee a decision to make in 3 0r 4 Mins of the game and he chose differently from the Porteous incident?

The point is getting refereed differently not about giving referee’s decisions as that’s their job to make decisions but fairly.

  26. Why do yesterday and today’s leading articles nudge in polar opposite directions?

Was yesterday’s deemed to have sailed too close to the wind?

If the Italian league can be fixed for Juve, the Champions League fixed for recently deceased Tappe, why on earth couldn’t a 3rd rate league be fixed for a club with a worldwide support of 500 million?

I’m not saying it has. But it would seem naive to discount it. Remember 2003?

Beyond thst, any referring bias is accentuated by their abject technical inadequacy.

  27. Meanwhile in Engerland, refs must declare their team allegiance and not referee those games or those involving their arch enemies, it seems. Cannae think why it wouldnae catch on in Scotchland.

Ref and Newcastle fan, Michael Oliver is on record saying:

“I never referee Newcastle games. We have to declare if we have an allegiance to any club or if a family member works at a club. You can’t do any match involving that team and I can’t do Sunderland, either, for obvious reasons.

  28. If referees were simply terrible (and they are due to the nature of the culture and process behind recruitment and promotion) then Honest Mistakes would be random.

Think Willie Collum – he’s given poor decisions against every team.

But if there is a pattern, how is it poor performance only?

    See https://philmacgiollabhain.ie/2021/09/27/fair-or-foul/

Heads up for CQN-ers – I am doing a new project on Honest Mistakes and in the next week will introduce a framework for assessing their impact. Then i will do a catch up on all the contentious decisions in the season so far. If it is all due to incompetence then there should be no net impact on points won/lost.

  29. Paul The Spark on

I wonder if someone clipped Paul’s wings after yesterday’s article as it’s a total flip today.

  30. Andy Patons Mullet on

The trial of VAR could be easily administered by piggy backing / using the English FA’s current set up? If it is to be three officials then them being in Middle England shouldn’t matter?
