Referring to a team no longer with us

753

Let’s be clear, you cannot punish a player on the basis that he has made a comment which is only offensive, offence is subjective, highly so in Scottish football, where thousands await the opportunity.

Nor can you punish a player for a derogatory remark which may offend, especially if the remark does not call into question the probity of the subject.  “Hearts are rotten, we beat them easily twice this season”, is a derogatory remark and will offend some Hearts fans, but it also falls into the category of being a fair opinion.

And without pointing out the obvious, you cannot offend the dead.  John Guidetti and the club are right to contest this ridiculous charge, which by context, clearly refers to a team no longer with us.

I was absolutely astonished to read that newco (and former oldco) director, Paul Murray, explained Dave King’s absence from newco’s recent share as he is waiting until the SFA “have completed their review of Dave’s status before he can fully participate in the future of the Club”.

The SFA have no issue whatsoever in Dave King investing heavily in newco, or in owning all shares.  Indeed, King is already the largest shareholder, which has attracted no attention from the football authorities.

The prospect of King sloping off if the SFA judge him not Fit and Proper (which I think they will), is a fabulous twist in the work of this legendary non-executive director of a dead club.  He sat on the oldco board which paid EBTs for so many years, he stayed while they made no provision for the HMRC tax case, plunging into the transfer market instead.  Now he awaits the whim of the SFA before deciding to invest, having led newco away from their primary source of funding.

What a star.

You would be ideal for a job as CFO at sevco fc.

anyway, the huns terrorist banner – its probably been mentioned before but is there not a republican song with those exact lyrics in it as well?

maybe they listened to the fenian record player before making it!

Best Answer: Well, the Huns were not entirely nomadic, they appear to have had settled residences as well. As in most pre-industrial societies, women probably took care of livestock, did the milking, the cheese-making, the brewing, and probably spent a lot of their time spinning and weaving, since cloth production was normally women’s work. They would have taken care of the children, who would have helped out with domestic tasks when they were old enough.

Upper class women would have had servants to do most of the work, and would have had more leisure time. Some rich graves of Hunnish women have been found, and they show that well off women had a lot of jewellery, and probably spent quite a lot of time adorning themselves.

I agree – I don’t think the SFA were ever going to declare him not F&P. This I believe is more down to perception. It will make it look like they have held a gun to the SFA’s head and they have caved in. Didn’t Paul Murray say a couple of weeks ago that they wanted to be running Scottish football “again”? This will make it look like they are.

  12. Oh Dear, they are at it again with their statements

    RST Statement on Sectarian Language

We welcome the SFA’s decision to charge Celtic’s John Guidetti for singing a sectarian song on a widely circulated internet video from Dutch TV. Sectarianism and racism have no place in Scottish football and it is extremely disappointing that yet another high profile Celtic player has been caught engaging in such behaviour.

Celtic’s statement that they are surprised by this outcome is typical of their approach to the problems they have had with racist and sectarian behaviour from their employees and fans over many years. This behaviour has more often than not been directed at Rangers fans. The word “hun” is not simply offensive, it is sectarian. In 2001 , Celtic themselves warned their staff and fans that use of the word “hun” was sectarian and offensive and they banned it from being used. 14 years later, after failing to deal with the consistent sectarian and pro terrorist chanting of their fans, they now choose to defend a player doing the same.

Anti-sectarian charities agree that hun is a sectarian term. The courts have prosecuted Celtic fans for using the word “hun”. Are those who defend its use telling us that when “Kill all huns” is scrawled on walls in Belfast there is no sectarian meaning? Celtic’s attempt to back pedal from their own stated, but never enforced, position and deny the true nature of their sectarianism problem is disgraceful. This will not be swept under the carpet. Celtic are fostering a culture of racism and sectarianism by consistently defending the fans and employees who take part in such behaviour.

We hope the SFA continue to treat this matter seriously and are not pressured by influential Celtic figures within their boardroom to make light of this charge. The only surprise that should be present in anyone’s mind is about why the police are not involved in closely examining Guidetti’s behaviour. We have recently seen fans jailed for precisely the same thing, why is this being treated any differently?

The Rangers Supporters Trust remains committed to eradicating all forms of sectarianism from Scottish football but, until these issues are dealt with without fear or favour by press and politicians, there will be no lasting solution. We will be seeking a meeting with the new Rangers board as soon as is practical to discuss how the current disparity in treatment and coverage can be addressed.
