Res 12 donors feed 650 kids in Liberia with Mary’s Meals

160

In May this year Celtic fans advertised in the Swiss media issues regarding the licensing of Rangers FC for Uefa competitions in 2011, when the club was in the hands of Craig Whyte.  The suspicion was that Mr Whyte made less than full and frank submissions to football authorities about his club’s tax and other financial affairs.

Perhaps as a consequence, two weeks later Uefa responded to a letter from Celtic shareholders on the matter, in which they confirmed the status of the “new club/new company” operating out of Ibrox.  Dialogue continues on the matter, which is why we have heard little directly from the anyone on the subject.

Hundreds of subscribers stepped forward to fund the advertising campaign, so much so that it returned a surplus of £7900, which was earmarked for Mary’s Meals.

Celtic Quick News has funded four school kitchens for Mary’s Meals in Malawi, but when we approached them this time, they asked if we could buy food instead.

That money is now with Mary’s Meals and will be used to feed primary children at two schools in Liberia for the next 12 months.  The Light of Islam Primary has a population of 350 and Siafa Dugba Public School has 300 pupils.

Mary’s Meals were delighted with the donation, commenting:

“We’re very grateful to Celtic supporters for this generous donation, which will be used to provide nutritious meals to 650 children every day they attend school in Liberia.

“Many children receiving Mary’s Meals in Liberia have been affected by the aftermath of the country’s civil war and, more recently, the devastating Ebola outbreak. A daily meal in a place of education provides stability for these children and encourages them to come to school and learn.

“On behalf of all the children attending Light of Islam Primary School and Siafa Dugba Public School in Liberia, thank you for this continued backing from Celtic supporters.”

Putting food on the table at a place of education for chronically deprived children is one of the most productive uses of aid we have today.  Not only does a nourishing meal build fitter, healthier, children, who are more capable of fighting disease, Mary’s Meals see a pickup of school attendance of 30% after their meals start.

This means kids who would not previously had access to schooling for a variety of reason, now get the basic primary education most of the world takes for granted.

So there’s a second wave of benefit in feeding children living in subsistence communities at school.  Not only are they stronger and healthier, learning to read and write, they will have better life opportunities as adults.  Primary education provides a lifetime’s worth of benefit.

Mary’s Meals are a remarkably efficient charity.  93% of funds raised reaches the end recipient.  They work in communities which are not only in need, but where their work can be of genuine benefit.

Liberia has had peace for a decade now.  It recently became the first African country to elect a female president, and established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to help it emerge from a cycle of civil war, the most recent of which cost 300,000 souls.  As a consequence, it is fertile ground to build the structures of state, education and life.

Ebola closed the country’s borders two years ago, which is a huge deal for a nation which imports 90% of its staple foods, and caused already-chronic childhood malnutrition rates to rise beyond the calculation.

Food is already on the table at Light of Islam and Siafa Dugba schools.  Mary’s Meals will send us photos in due course.  A sign will be erected at each location to mark your donation, the impact of which, we’ll never know.

Thank you, you are just wonderful.  But you knew that anyway.

£7,900 to feed 650 children during one year means one child can be fed in Liberia for £1 per month. A remarkably rewarding use of a windfall resource. All praise and thanksgiving to everyone involved.

Good luck to the Celts tonight, heading to Celtic Park soon and looking forward to another cup-tie. Often-times our smaller League Cup crowds are among the least critical to individual players. One or two could use a bit of tolerance.

    Celtic forever.

  6. Thank you Paul for working with Mary’s Meals on behalf of CQNers.

This is why I consider myself humbled and fortunate to be a Celtic supporter.

    Congratulations to all involved.

Not being pedantic, but what lost revenue ?

If we have 52000 season tickets, this means we have just over 8000 spare seats,

Surely a bit of common sense in relocating through construction, which may mean utilising n official gazebo for feeding would at best cost us under £1m

There is always options to be looked at throughout.

Serious note – I was with a friend on Saturday night, who has an executive table ( for 6) in main stand, with seats directly behind visiting directors, told me last 2 seasons he could not give his seats/table away, this season under Brndan, and he quoted football philosophy, he has a waiting list of clients waiting /wanting to attend, so demand must be there if we are managed correctly ?

Celtic in profit as analyst predicts big growth potential for its stock

    21st September 2016

    Celtic fans

    By Paul Nicholson

September 21 – Scottish giants Celtic announced a £500,000 pre-tax profit for the year to end June, reversing a loss of almost £4 million for the previous 12 months and prompting one stockmarket analysis to predict the AIM-listed shares could rise by 400% over the next five years.

Certainly there is a positive feeling around Celtic despite the club’s thumping 7-0 loss to Barcelona in the first round of Champions League matches. But it is the Champions League that could deliver the revenue bump the club is looking for with a potential £30 million coming into next year’s numbers.

The strength of the club is in its fanbase and its global nature that has yet to be fully exploited commercially. If the club can maintain its Champions League group qualification (not made easier by UEFA’s Champions League group qualification criteria coming in next season), then significant growth on the £52 million revenue last year can be expected.

The £500,000 profit was achieved through increased income from player sales, in particular the £12 million for the sale of defender Virgil van Dijk to Southampton, and the transfers of Teemu Pukki to Brondby and Adam Matthews to Sunderland.

But it is the Champions League where the club sees the immediate potential for revenue increase.

Peter Lawwell, Celtic’s chief executive, said: “For a club like Celtic, operating in a market where television values have fallen significantly behind our neighbours across Europe, qualification for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League is of paramount importance.

“The financial rewards allow for investment in the playing squad and physical assets, but moreover, the prestige of participating in the premier club competition in the world reinforces the reach and importance of the club to so many people around the world,” he added.

“Fundamentally, Celtic is a Champions League club; our infrastructure and continued investment reflect that.”

That position is verified by looking at other income streams where, for example, a profit of £4.7 million was made on merchandising, only a small increase on the previous year.

The return of rivals Rangers to the Scottish Premier League should stimulate domestic income, but it is the international markets that could be developed further for partnerships and sponsors.

It is this potential that led investor briefing site Seeking Alpha to project an upward revaluation of the club’s shares, based on a “fantastic global brand with conservative capitalization and improved fundamentals backstops current market valuation.”

The US-based analysis continued: “Celtic is an institution. Yet, with years of limited float, marginal profits, and next to zero liquidity, it is also completely overlooked despite improved fundamentals and a potentially enormous (if uncertain), impending catalyst which could propel the stock 400% higher within years.”

An effusive billing in a cup half empty market.

  10. Wouldn’t it be great if Celtic PLC in the spirit of all things Celtic and the magnificent endeavors that brought “Res 12 donors feed 650 kids in Liberia with Mary’s Meals” should match the surplus contribution earmarked for Mary’s Meals? Just saying…now before the happyclappers get awe bent oota shape detracting from the glorious balance sheet race with the huns think about it. Whats £7,900 ?? I estimate its equivalent of rock salt costs saved for driveways on cold and frosty mornings.

My mate has told me the same. I was in the number 7 for the Hun game, it was packed.

There was a bloke and his Mrs obviously disappointed Huns sitting with their faces tripping them next to us (I checked the toilets for damage) ;)

There is a lot of money made through hospitality.

Lately any time I’ve went it’s been half full at most, but it’s not just Hun games it’s packed for now, it’s the arrival BR and the way our the teams is playing in most games.

  13. I know there was the discussion of how we’d be rolling in cash. Could be not build a tidy wee stadium at Barrowfield for eg the Europa Youth League, Development Squad and Ladies’ games, instead of schlepping round the lower league grounds of West Central Scotland?

Nope. It was frozen assets from the Ayatollah days that Iran had been asking back for 36 years.

  15. Interesting reading the posts re stadium development and for the Accountant looking at this he can add to the list of positives already outlined yesterday…

    1. Another Kerrydale type bar could be filled by the supporters clubs who previously were happy to buy a membership for use of this facility. The bar take is significant on top. Celtic can’t offer the facilities at the moment, thus as Giggsy stated the Affiliation last their access to the bar.

    2. Cowiebhoy wrote about a willingness to pay more for slightly better facilities, so may be happy to add a few hundred onto his season ticket package if he has enhanced facilities. There is scope to more make money from better facilities aimed at different sectors.

  16. Don’t know if already posted

Confirmed that Celtics allocation for Gladbach is 2,300.which is in the bottom tier.By the time they allocate tickets to official travel partners club sponsors players etc, I imagine that there is only going to be 1500 balloted to those independent travellers. On going talks to have a big screen erected in the the city centre. Not a lot of tickets then to go around the 10,000 expected to travel.

From what I hear is that when Man City travel over there they are being accommodated in both the lower and upper tiers
