Rest precious limbs at Tannadice

608

Tomorrow is match day 5 of a 38 game Scottish Premiership league programme, and although there’s a possibility we may find ourselves five points adrift, the result from Tannadice will have absolutely no bearing on our season.

Celtic must weigh up the needs of squad fitness for the next four days, concluding with the visit to Malmo on Tuesday. We have some precious limbs attached to Virgil, Scott, Stefan (J) and most of all, Sugar Ray Griffiths. I strongly recommend all are rested tomorrow. The consequences of any of these players being injured for Tuesday is not worth contemplating.

It was considerably reassuring that Qarabag, who Celtic eliminated in the last round of the Champions League, won away at Young Boys of Berne last night. Any team winning in Switzerland have earned respect.

It was just as reassuring that Malmo’s last round opponents, Salzburg, went down 2-0 to Dinamo in Minsk. It’s difficult to determine comparative strengths this early in the season, but some people may have overestimated Salzburg and underestimated Qarabag,

We’ll find out on Tuesday.

Well done to all concerned with the Jock Stein Charity Match, which takes place on Sunday, 6 September, at East End Park, Dunfermline, in aid of Celtic Foundation and Pars’ Foundation. Alan Stubbs, who will be wearing the hoops one more time, said, “The thing about Celtic is that it’s a fantastic club, both when you’re there and when you’re not, and that’s a testament to the fans”.

Best of luck for the season, Alan.

British Champion boxer and Celtic fan, Scotty Cardle, is also playing, as is X-Men star, James McAvoy. Details here.

  1. If Lustigs withdrawal on Wednesday is diagnosed accurately as cramp, then 6 days rest til next Tuesday is entirely sufficient.

To say he won’t be risked, in what is a win or bust 20million game, is just ludicrous.

He should and will be given every chance to make Tuesdays game.

Efe Ambrose = Champions League suicide.

  2. So Lustig has never been fit long enough to experience cramp before, well there you have it :)

  3. Mr Pastry @ 1:50 pm,

I’ve read your posts over the piece, your football commentary, your (all too familiar:-) politico rants, and your… well let’s call it extraneous comments.

For me you bring little percipience to the blog.

So what are we to make of your insights into Ronny Deila?!

Well, you feel he’s an empty vessel… a fraud even?

Well all the great credos, insightful philosophies and illuminating arts have a truth, sometimes profound, sometimes simple, yet self evident truths none the less.

You don’t have to be any sort of a genius to see these truths, just understanding, there are many very smart folk, or some who believe themselves to be smart folk, who are blinded to these truths, ignorant, if you like.

A few months ago I watched a subtitled video presentation from Ronny Deila – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXCgwKAH1Uw

I watched closely, the Celtic team RD played before he took them away on a January break and I watched the team afterwards.

Ronny Deila is no Chancey Gardiner… and if you can’t see that, well…

    Hail Hail

  4. Think tomorrow’s game should have been called off all the teams are going to benefit by about £150.000 pound if Celtic get through to group stage

    What is the Stars

Excellent sir – got him at 11/1 this morning. Weekend sorted.

  6. I agree wholeheartedly with the call to rest a few key players.

VVD? Probably. Bring in Charlie or young O’Connel.

    Izzy? Yea. Bring young Tierney.

With Fisher or Janko at right back we will have a defence of

Gordon, Fisher or Janko, Boyata, Mulgrew, Tierney.

Scott should be placed in a padded room and fed filet mignon, very rare.

James should be put back in his cot and given as many Rusks as he can eat.

Take Stefan to his local public baths and have him work out his energy doing laps of the pool for an hour or three.

Griffiths should be sent in a taxi to take a tour of the Tunnock factory, but not when the ladies are on the production line. He can bring back tea cakes and caramel wafers for the bench on Tuesday.

  7. Lustig’s injury isn’t as bad as thought? I’m so happy I could cry like I had just got cramp in my hamstring!!

For me, Lustig is the man that makes the Tic tick.

From Bella Caledonia – anyone think Police Scotland Focus division will step in ? No, me either

Rangers supporters representative Craig Houston has been caught posting homophobic abuse at former Hibernian midfielder Scott Allan after the youngster signed for city rivals Celtic.

Sons of Struth founder Houston was so incensed by the news of Allan’s decision to sign for Celtic, that he posted video tweets with homophobic comments, labelling him as a ‘gay’ and calling him a ‘poofter’ while honouring Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday – who is close friends with Allan.

Boyhood Rangers fan Allan had been the subject of three failed bids from the Ibrox side, with Hibernian refusing to sell to their championship rivals. This led to Allan handing in a transfer request to force a move to Ibrox, but again this was rejected.

Houston had lauded the potential arrival of Allan at Rangers calling him a talented midfielder, and claiming to his followers that his agent would do everything in his power to make sure he would sign a pre-contract agreement for Rangers in January.

The Rangers fan had also criticised Hibernian fans for posting abusive comments about the midfielder just days before Celtic signed the youngster for £275,000.

When confronted online by the BBC’s Tom English over his ‘homophobic moment’, Houston [who had labelled the Irishman as anti-Rangers during a previous BBC Sportsound show] claimed that the Irishman was pandering to Celtic fans.

Houston said: “Someone seems to be playing to their target audience. Again.”

Houston, who hails from Linwood, co-founded Sons of Struth with convicted drug dealer, football hooligan and former BNP supporter Sandy Chugg – who is up in court in December after being arrested following Rangers’ League Cup semi final 2-0 defeat to Celtic in February.

The salesman for drinks firm Vodquila, has been used by a number of media outlets in Scotland over the past year, including BBC, STV, the Evening Times and the Daily Record during the Rangers fans’ boycott of the club when controlled by the previous board under the Easdale brothers.

There is no news if these same media outlets will continue to use Houston’s services following his homophobic comments.

This latest Rangers fan rep scandal comes months after Chris Graham of the Rangers Supporters Trust, had to resign from the Rangers board after just two days as a director following a racist tweet posted to a Muslim cleric depicting the Prophet Mohammed engaged in a sex act in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack.

    Houston was unavailable for comment.

Like one of the wee Russian dolls, one bigot disappears,up pops another one.I’m sure it won’t affect the amount of airtime Radio Scotland give him……..

  20. VvD named in the provisional Holland squad (my predictive text insisted that should have been Hollandaise Sauce).

If the big man scores and gets us through to the group stages on Tuesday night I will be eternally grateful and wish him well on his EPL adventure. If he merely gets us through and doesn’t score I will secretly harbour a grudge…

  21. The fact that you can click on ‘Paul67’ and go straight to the new article is even better when the post that immediately follows is scripted by Mr Percival Pastry of Level 5 fame.

  22. Two things:

    1. Paul67, WinningCaptains and other site admins – could you explain to this technophobe how adverts get on to the site? I had thought things appeared (as they do on other sites I use) based on other searches, log ons etc So for example, I buy a Kindle and I start getting loads of amazon ads, I look on line for a hotel to stay in and get Trivago and Laterooms on other other sites I visit.

HOWEVER – I come to CQN and get British Armed forces recruiting and today, a new one on me – an ad for Lockheed Martin, manufacturers of miltary equipment, purveyors of death on a grand scale.

I am pretty confident CQN does not invite this stuff but it’s pretty far from ‘ethical’ on the part of whoever is squeezing it in. Is it the host company for the blog platform you are using?

    2. Resting players – aye. Absolutely. It’s a must. But there should be no acceptance of losing points. I understand and share the point of view that we’ll win the league regardless of tomorrow’s result but I don’t want to see casual acceptance of point dropping before Euro games to creep in either.

Hail Hail and down with Lockheed Martin and purveyors of death everywhere……

  23. Here WITS – I keep missing your winning tips. The losing ones I’m on like a shot…………

Just keeping your feet on the ground!!

    All tips gratefully received!!
