Rest precious limbs at Tannadice

608

Tomorrow is match day 5 of a 38 game Scottish Premiership league programme, and although there’s a possibility we may find ourselves five points adrift, the result from Tannadice will have absolutely no bearing on our season.

Celtic must weigh up the needs of squad fitness for the next four days, concluding with the visit to Malmo on Tuesday. We have some precious limbs attached to Virgil, Scott, Stefan (J) and most of all, Sugar Ray Griffiths. I strongly recommend all are rested tomorrow. The consequences of any of these players being injured for Tuesday is not worth contemplating.

It was considerably reassuring that Qarabag, who Celtic eliminated in the last round of the Champions League, won away at Young Boys of Berne last night. Any team winning in Switzerland have earned respect.

It was just as reassuring that Malmo’s last round opponents, Salzburg, went down 2-0 to Dinamo in Minsk. It’s difficult to determine comparative strengths this early in the season, but some people may have overestimated Salzburg and underestimated Qarabag,

We’ll find out on Tuesday.

Well done to all concerned with the Jock Stein Charity Match, which takes place on Sunday, 6 September, at East End Park, Dunfermline, in aid of Celtic Foundation and Pars’ Foundation. Alan Stubbs, who will be wearing the hoops one more time, said, “The thing about Celtic is that it’s a fantastic club, both when you’re there and when you’re not, and that’s a testament to the fans”.

Best of luck for the season, Alan.

British Champion boxer and Celtic fan, Scotty Cardle, is also playing, as is X-Men star, James McAvoy. Details here.

  1. Griff’s goal on Wednesday reminds me of Johnny Doyle’s goal against Real Madrid at Paradise

Have not read back. I have been pretty busy recently.

I thought we were good on Wednesday. Lots to be positive about.

I agree I would play the B team against the Arabs.

I think we will get at least a point in Malmo.

If we do then it is time to open up the cheque book and get a marquee signing. Maybe two. Please spare me the arithmetically challenged tripe

I read during the week on facebook the usual suspects slating Izzy and Efe.

I like them both. Very much.

Getting there with Ronny but we need some quality and experience for the CL

She came back home to darkness and me as happy as Larry until the final minute. Great girl she even cleaned it up for me. :-)

Think you need to be a tartan army member to have a chance unless you know any debenture owners

Ok lhads got to go dont believe the pish. Celtic were good on Wednesday. Better than Malmo. Just because they scraped a last minute lifeline does not change the fact that we are miles ahead of them.

Went up to my da’s after work to take him his messages, I told him you posted a tip up as he is a punter, for the love of me I couldn’t mind it’s name. Bah :(

P.s. My auld man was a bookies runner in the gorbals when he was young, he still counts his bets up In shillings :)

  11. we should play our strongest team tomorrow, get the 3pts, build up the confidence and Tues. will take care of itself, we don’t have the depth of a quality squad to mess about with team selection.

Please stop telling players that they are tired and need a rest.

All we need now is a poor result tomorrow and the team losing even more confidence especially at the back, a clean sheet tomorrow would be welcome.

  12. Awe naw..

My brother has two silver debentures, if he’s not using them (which he probably will be) I’ll do my best to get them for you.

How’s your young bro doing? not seen him for ages.

  13. The ‘annoying’ adverts are all part of CQN being a modern website where advertising space is in effect sold and you will see many ads related to your previous Internet usage, the wonders of cookies and yourself. This happens to you on many other sites, newspapers in particular. CQN probably receives a payment if you open the ad.

The main team selection issue tomorrow is going to be the mid field, if we rest Brown and Bitton we are pretty much toothless, more so if you take Johansen and Armstrong out the equasion. Yet I guess it will have to be done. Probably we will end up with a kind of ‘fancy dan’ midfield – e.g. GMS, Rogic, Commons – maybe even draft big Charlie in there. The bottom line is we can recover from losing at Tannadice , but there will be no second chance if we fail in Sweden.

Unless, of course, they field a suspended player…

  16. The Euro Super Cup final a week or two back showed us that even Barcelona can get dragged out of shape if they keep chasing, not so much the game, but another goal even when they were 4-1 up. No Barca us, but we made a similar mistake at 3-1 on Wednesday night. Barca ended up having to score a winner in extra time while we need to score away to give us a good chance of going through.

  17. I see no ads at all on CQN. I’m using Chrome browser with the Adblock Plus (ABP) extension.

It’s so easy and works so well.

CQN works just fine too. Happy chappy.

  19. the long wait is over on

If it were down to me I’d just not turn up at Tannadice and forfeit the three points.

The risk of an injury ahead of our most important game of the season – probably the only single game between now and the end of the season that really, really counts – is not worth the reward.

IMHO we probably need to take the lead in Malmo to get through.

  20. I would have as many of the back four we will play on Tuesday as possible. We need to get them used to playing together and concentrating.

If true Virgil getting into the Dutch squad, even a provisional one, could be terrific news for the player and for us. Better still he gets called up and we’re through to the Champions League, and Danny Blind tells him to stay at Celtic Park.

I am not for a second suggesting that Ronny is a fraud – he is a decent man doing his utmost in the job.

I think that he is naive and so is the squad, in their approach and operation in matches.

I think Ronny is also sincere and believes that the level of performance shown in training and coaching sessions will be seamlessly transferred to the field of play – I actually agree – at the end of training sessions there is a natural ‘winding-down’ mentality – this I believe is what is now happening in actual matches.

Top teams are forged in the ‘heat of battle’ – we are not a top team and we wilt ‘in battle’

Football matches last for ninety-minutes – Celtic doesn’t.
