Return of Hooper-Stokes man-love required

468

Since a couple of flat performances against Sion in the qualifying round, Celtic have reserved some of their most organised performances of the season for the Europa League, despite the lack of a victory.  Honourable defeat in Madrid followed by more-than-credible draws against Udinese and Rennes suggest there is more to this Celtic team that we see in the SPL.

It’s hard to look forward to the second half of the season and the potential for knock out football in the Europa League but if Celtic get their act together, a win tonight could go a long way towards restoring the reputation of the club, and a few players.

How Neil Lennon responds to yet more injury absentees is difficult to imagine.  I’m not expecting fluency from a makeshift defence and midfield, although Celtic Flourished in the Glasgow derby in similar circumstances on 2 January this year, but I’m hoping to see Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes look more like a partnership.  We need both players on form and enjoying their work if any progress is to be made.

Busy day ahead but the Hearts situation is possibly worth a discussion this afternoon.  The scenario changes by the day at Ibrox but that conversation will need to wait.

  1. Maybe we should lay off Kevin a bit.

I’m sure it’s not his fault.

    Personally, I blame the parentheses.

Henrik has scored for Celtic since Sammi last scored. Do you not remember his hat-trick against Man U on August 9th?

  3. Samaras divides the bhoys, no doubts even in my own family I and my son are the only ones who like the big man! Yeah he doesnt score enough goals, frustrates the heck out of you but the boy is a better player than most of the fans give him credit! He always ends up the scapegoat most likely because he never scores as other fan favourites make the same mistakes game in game out and dont get the abuse he gets!! Its time to encourage him not berate him, as it should be for all the players they are playing for OUR CELTIC, as he is a valuable squad member and I for one would be sad to see him go if that comes to pass!

Onto tonight its time for this team to get the finger out and play for the fans and win this game. Every last man should come off that field having given 100% for the cause! C’MON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN!!

Nothing to do with Samaras,it IS about supporting EVERY Celtic player on that pitch EVERY game. You should think about changing your moniker btw.

I would start Hooper and Stokes, of course, and your stat removes all doubt! However, spare a thought for Paddy McCourt, no stranger to scoring goals, but who has only been given about 150 minuites’ playing time, sliced up into 7 separate appearances from the bench.

No player can thrive under such conditions. It’s about time he was given a proper run in the team.

That argument is like Spike Milligan sketch.. Liked it!

I still maintain Sammi doomed to pelters as long as he is considered an out and out striker. Think of him as an attacking midfielder and he is a different prospect.

I hope Ki not starting tonight. He is not a ‘must win’ player..

    We need the grit tonight…

Stokes should start he always looks like scoring to me. Now rate him above Hooper.

    TET,

I doubt the authorities will have a choice, the president of the sfa is up to his neck in board level financial irregulaities, the sfa have ben complicit in financial and administrative irregularities, the HMRC and UEFA will need to be satisfied :o)

What I cna see is the establishment trying to kill the game in scotland, a bit like its ma baw and I’m no playing.

If the hn go to the wall they will try and destroy and take everything down with them, that is our biggest threat, making sure there are enough teams who would want to be involved in a fair and transparent set up.

Another wee thought that struck me, is when the bubble bursts where are all the huns going to get work, the sfa and meedia have just about hit saturation point with existing and exhun pundits.

Getting rid of the puppet masters ain’t gonna happen, too many behind the scenes for that to happen, they will sacrafice who needs be.

You could have hit the nail on the head there with your theory about destroying the game in scotland, they are so fecked up in the head, it’s the sort of stunt they would pull, and from where I am sitting, it would be no a bad thing, could well be the best outcome for us.

    Interesting times ahead.

  14. Forster; Cha, Majstorovic, Loovens, Matthews; Forrest, Kayal, Wanyama, Commons; Hooper, Stokes.

That’s my prediction for the team tonight, although it seems with the back 4 we don’t really have a choice. Samaras and McCourt will probably feature too.

    tyrehoops,

that wil be the royal we, I certainly wont be calling for his head and I sense a growing realisation among the support that they are being manipulated to demand his head, I think you’ll begin to see a different attitude. People are begining to remember the conditions and limits being imposed on our manager.

I think that until the Hun/SFA question is resolved, there should be a moratorium on Celtic people attacking our club.

Don’t think we’ll get it, though.

There will be plenty time afterwards, when the dealin’s done, for praise or recriminations.

For the first time ever, I think that off field events are more important than what is happening on the field.

That is the reason why, for now, I am not getting overly wound up about our results.

I always want to see us winning, of course, but, there is a bigger, more important game being played here.

Let’s give the club time and space to play their hand.

  19. Paul67 et al

Even with players of the ability of Nakamura and McGeady the two up front (McDonald/Samaras) strategy died a death in Gordon Strachan’s last season. Forrest and Commons can both play, but, well if I have to explain the weakfalls of such a line-up, then you have not been reading this blog, because it has all been said before. Stokes did quite well against Rennes last time out, so deserves the start, with a five man midfield behind him. Rennes, like Sion, and Marseilles are good going forward, no need to create the space for them.

I retract that last post, didn’y know you where from the milk.

  27. For those who don’t want to afford Neil the excuse that he is a rookie manager. Ally McCoist took the Rangers job earlier this year an older man than Martin O’Neill was when he took the Celtic job in 2000. McCoist also had 4 and a half years working under Smith before being allowed the reins and even then he only got the job thanks to his mate Martin Bain as it is apparent that Whyte didn’t want him.

Neil is working under exceptionally difficult circumstances and he is a rookie manager like it or not. We either stick with him when the going gets tough or we turn and demand another manager who will work under the same (or perhaps worse) SPL financial constraints. And who might that be when Lambert, Moyes, Coyle don’t appear to want to leave the EPL?

I’m not happy at all with the backing he has been given this season and he is under pressures none of us can understand. He has made many mistakes this season – criticising players in public, strange tactics, lack of substitutions. I still hope that he can turn it round as firstly, he deserves time for what he went through for the club last season, secondly, we saw what he is capable of in spells last season, and thirdly, I cannot see any viable alternative as a manager right now.

Our suits didn’t get to where they are by jumping in feet first, they are shrewed men, and I do believe they are in for the long haul.

There is as you say a much bigger scenario at play here, it’s a social/sectarian problem that may or may not be tackled, the people in power have a real dilema on their hands.

Celtic are akin to a Jewish team playing in Nazi Germany.

The fraud and corruption has been sussed, and exposed for the world to see, question is what are they going to do about it ?

From where I stand, this will be our passport out of this sectarian land, I have faith that Dermo will get his wish, and all the dinero that it will bring.
