Risky Ronny, win a new Celtic shirt

712

I can’t argue with John Hughes winning the Manager of the Year award.  Without glossing over the obvious semi-final issue, he’s taken Inverness to stick-on favourites for the Scottish Cup and, for a while, stuck with Aberdeen in the Best of the Rest fight.  The second half of the season have seen fortunes fade, but this reflects the resource paucity he has, compared to Dundee United or Aberdeen.

What’s just as clear is that Ronny Deila would have been a contender for the award.  Appointing a manager is always a risk.  Gordon Strachan was as safe a pair of hands as you could hope for in 2005, but it took nerves of steel for him to cope with some early reversals.  Tony Mowbray was also a known quantity, who should have done better, but rookie Neil Lennon pitted against experienced Walter Smith was highly risky.  Neil could have sunk without a trace, instead of winning all those trophies.

At least Neil knew the club and the club knew Neil.  Appointing a guy from one of the smallest professional clubs in Europe, totally unknown in the Scottish game until Celtic scouted Stefan Johansen, was an almighty risk.

What we recruited was a philosophy.  Celtic knew how a football team should be prepared, how to recruit, what tactical intelligence was required in a manager, and they travelled to Strømsgodset to find their man.

Had he qualified for the Champions League group stage, I reckon Ronny would have won Manager of the Year, but as this is the standard Celtic managers are judged by, he missed out.  There are no guarantees in football, so qualifying next season cannot be taken for granted, but he should be better prepared.  As should the players.  This is the target, Ronny.

SPECIAL COMPETITION ALERT

Celtic sponsor, Magners, have offered two of the new home shirts, launched yesterday, as competition prizes.  To win one, all you have to do is answer the following question:

Who is the Celtic assistant manager?

Email your entry to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the assistant manager in the SUBJECT line of your message.  Competition closes at 1pm tomorrow, so you have one day to get your answer in.  Terms and conditions apply.

These are two fabulous prizes.  While you are entering the competition, you might want to donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen campaign.  You can do so here.  Thank you.

Many thanks to Magners (who get what we’re about).

And no other person was offered the job before it was offered to Ronny?

I’m happy to be corrected but if I remember rightly (though I’m more than happy to be corrected) Ronny was being brought in as a No. 2 after Celtic parted company with Johan Mjallby.

Also three people turned down the job before it was offered to Ronny. Between Neil leaving and Ronny being appointed was not a long time…. how many weeks was it?

Didn’t our CEO recently admit that giving Ronny the job was a big gamble?

  12. Does anyone know or care whether Ronny was first choice?

Was there a first choice at all, or just a list of candidates?

Choosing a manager or making any senior appointment is a process.

Ronny was obviously on our radar and impression the selection board with his presence, vision, game knowledge and playing philosophy.

Unreserved credit is due to the selection board, our senior management and to Ronny in particular.

I wasn’t the first person to be offered my current post. But the consensus is that I’ve done a better job than the person who got the original offer – a female roy Keane by all accounts!

I had the pleasure of taking part in the football aid game at a very wet celtic park on sunday.

After carefully cleaning my boots yesterday I now have a small pile of hallowed celtic park grass drying out in my kitchen.

was thinking that it might be a good idea to maybe sell off some small samples of grass clippings to raise money for mary’s meals.

would imagine there must be some guys interested in celtic memorabilia who would like that kind of thing.

    !!Bada Bing!!

Must check up on that, a friend of mine has friend fairly close to the MD of Magners.

Although sponsorships usually change mid term so I cant see that being the reason for changing a strip – its possibly more likely a case of what lymmbhoy has said – Celtic have negotiated a deal based on the fans being fleeced and having to spend more of their own money.

    ……………………………

If Celtic failed to take advantage of merchandising opportunities to earn money they would be in the wrong and naive.

If fans do not want to buy the NB top then they shouldn’t buy it.

For many fans buying the new top (whenever one comes out) is as important a thing as they come. Having all the tops over the years is a matter of pride to some fans. Others take pride in buying and wearing a retro top, some (like me) with no sponsor.

Celtic have a lucrative deal with NB apparently, and new tops are part of life, for fans and clubs.

If Celtic change the top then fans can choose to buy or not.

Your last sentence “Celtic have negotiated a deal based on the fans being fleeced and having to spend more of their own money.” is such a curious statement.

Celtic did a deal to fleece the fans?

Whose money would the fans be spending if it wasn’t their own?

The fans don’t HAVE to spend anything at all.

Just saying because I don’t subscribe to the notion that fans have no choice. The empty seats tell us they know they have a choice.

You obviously have a rosey garden and I applaud you on that.

You are clearly privileged enough to have the choices of do I or dont I – please spare a thought for those who dont.

Also, you have obviously never had a child screaming and crying at you because they dont have all the kits – as soon as they hit the shelves.

Please also spare a thought for the kind of sacrifices those closer to the bread line than you obviously are (rightly or wrongly) make in order to placate that child – or in many cases multiples of children.

    ………………………

    Eyes Wide Open

Honestly didn’t really know where to start with this at first, because you ignored my point entirely and chose to turn it round by claiming victim status. Nearly scrolled by but decided to respond because you make so many assertions about me about which you can’t possibly have any knowledge.

I have no rosey garden, but I may just have a rosier outlook.

I am not privileged at all, never have been, neither financially nor in any other way. I have to make choices about what I can afford and what I have to do without. I raised two sons who were Celtic daft and had to contend with the pressures that that brings. I now have 6 grandchildren and am faced with the same issue, but have less deniability for refusing them now – or so it seems anyway.

I have never had a child screaming at me – ever, because they want something. They might moan a bit but that’s all, but that doesn’t mean that I had plenty and they never wanted for anything. As a father of younger sons, it seemed then that the name footwear and such were the ‘holy grail’ of children’s demands. I couldn’t afford to buy the Nike, Addidas, Reebok stuff. Just the way it was. We shopped at charity shops for almost everything.

Rather than be insensitive to the plight of those who are nearer the breadline (nothing could be further from the truth) – I was struck by your suggestion that Celtic had arranged a deal with NB that was designed to fleece the fans and force them to spend their own dwindling supply of money. Celtic are no less culpable than any business that has to sell to survive, toys, music, tvs, cars, and by your logic all the Celtic fans that buy a new top are complicit in encouraging Celtic to keep renewing their tops, and in so doing heap pressure on those less fortunate.

I do give a thought and in fact give a lot more to help the plight of those less fortunate than me and my own. I just don’t make mention if it as I usually prefer to be an anonymous benefactor.

I have sympathy with those who find themselves unable to provide all that their children want, but I have extensive experience in that field myself.

My other point was simply that a new Celtic top for many is a priority purchase – regardless of any other circumstances. No judgment on that at all – just a fact. Some other fans don’t bother with tops, others have one and that is enough.

I simply disagreed with your statement that Celtic did a shirt deal intending to fleece fans, poor or other wise, that’s all. The social issues that abound are peripheral to that statement, again IMHO.

I hope you and yours are well.

    HH
