Scott Brown defence, pyro problems, the joy of Ryan Christie

265

Scott Brown was assaulted at Ibrox on Sunday and was relentlessly taunted for a family bereavement.  His trademark celebration was understated but marked the treatment he received.  He has been cited by the SFA for “not acting in the best interests of Association Football.”  There is plenty of precedent for Celtic’s legal team to call in his defence.

I have stood within two yards of Celtic fans throwing pyrotechnics onto the field of play.  I have also been in a stairwell, exiting a game with thousands of other packed Celtic fans, when a device went off to the delight of a handful, causing panic to hundreds of others.

If you think appealing to a desire not to damage the reputation of Celtic fans will stop those throwing pyrotechnics, you are wrong.  The reputation of Celtic fans is inconsequential to anyone who throws an item at a player or onto the field.  This is their chance to set their own rules, their personal reputation remains just fine.  If you think they are going to stop because Neil Lennon tells them to, you are deluded.

This will result in blanket video surveillance, a handful of prosecutions, and then we will get back to normal, when Celtic fans’ reputation was the envy of world football.

How much have we missed Ryan Christie?  It is not just what he personally brings, it is having him, Callum McGregor and James Forrest on the field at the same time allows us to move the ball at a pace that is not possible without them.

  1. I saw the GB statement. They have their take on things and their own way of expressing themselves. I don’t happen to agree with some of that. That’s life.

However, the one thing I really take exception to is the GB’s ongoing use of the word Ultra to describe themselves or what they associate with.

Having been the victim of Ultras during my time living in Europe, I associate the word primarily with fascists, bullies and neanderthal attitudes to football and it’s enjoyment. I’m not at all sure what the GB think they gain by using this word to describe themselves. Maybe they think others will be intimidated. Certainly the ultras around Europe are that.

In this day and age, when the use of language to affirm identity is considered a key indicator of values, I find the ongoing use of this term to be, at the very least, odd, though sinister is probably closer to the mark. I wish they would disassociate themselves from it as, in my view. It stands for everything Celtic is not about.

Interesting stuff regarding the GB’s ability to generate an atmosphere.

Lisbon 67 — where were they?

EC SF 70 vs Leeds — where were they?

EC QF 74 vs Basle / SM scoring the 4th into the original TFOD end — where were they?

10 Men WTL 1979 — Where were they?

Centenary Cup Final — Where were they?

EuC 97 vs L/pool and the R5 mikes fail after the SD goal — where were they?

    Seville — Where were they?

To me the whole ultra fan thing is synthetic and choreographed — it is a performance and not a joy.

If they decided to up sticks and spend more time with their scooters we would still sing and it would be spontaneous and a bit repetitive but we would still sing.

The atmosphere at CP that made others look on in admiration came from the fact that everyone joined in, it came from all of us — including the suits and the stiffs in the Main Stand — and it represented the support as a totality.

The atmosphere was not down to a self proclaimed glee club with a drum and a loudhailer thumbing through a songbook to follow a well worn pattern devoid of any engagement with what is going on in front to them.

We have outsourced the singing responsibilities to the GB and in keeping with most outsourcing events the level of performance has collapsed towards box ticking, going through the motions and phoning the performance in.

Time to take back control and not in a kid on Brexit type manner.

  3. Why don’t we just stop using the word “ultra” and replace it with the word “fan*y”?

And apologies to any 18th century slappers out there who do not want to be mixed up with the GB and their middle class edginess.

  4. The atmosphere at Celtic Park before the Green Brigade moved to 111 was Arsenal-like.

Other than the odd euro game and games against that horrible lot it was shocking.

Anyone who says otherwise wisney there.

    Hail Hail.

  5. !!Bada Bing!! on

Fred C- you’re correct mate, but i think that possibly the GB ship has sailed,to renounce the old stuff, and make themselves a really positive part of our history, i hope there’s still time, but its running out in the eyes of a lot of supporters IMO HH

  6. The GB issue is a sideshow.

It deflects from the real issue of attacks on our club and captain.

Outside Scotland, I have never heard of an assault victim being blamed.

First it was Lennon. Now it’s Brown.

Is anyone curious that post game violence and finger pointing only occurs when Scotland’s newest side loses, on and off the park?

Does a more classless support or management team exist?

Is there a more compliant sports media anywhere in the world?

    The SFA is a joke.

A caricature of incompetent blue blazered bowling club buffoons.

    (Love an alliterative sentence.)

Traynor is the Pied Piper of Hampden and the bureaucrats are marching to his tune.

We, club and fans, need to give support to our captain.

    He is the guilty party.

Guilty of a desire to win.

    Guilty of being successful.

Guilty of denying the establishment club a successful season.

Guilty of celebrating with a smile on his face.

Guilty of being Celtic captain, leading us to 8 in a row.

  7. !!Bada Bing!! on

have absolutely no faith in Lawwell fighting for anything fan based.Still waiting for the ‘transparent ‘ report on John Cheatins assessment of the game on 29 January. The man has too many UEFA Committees to ‘serve’ on to cause any ripples in our wee shitey league. We will make more statements, and we will still bend over and take it.Accountable to himself now Rodgers is away,as for guys saying Desmond………he doesn’t know who we are plon Saturday….

    MadMitch

You’re correct, there is no atmosphere outside of the really big games with the GB. It is up to the normal fans to correct that, but they wont.

For me, without the GB and the TIFO, the Barcelona 125 years game would not have been as epic.

BTW, you could add last year’s cup final to that list. I hate Hampden normally but the atmosphere last year was fantastic.

The days of the Jungle and spontaneous celebrations are gone. The GB filled the atmosphere vacuum.

BTW, you’re beginning to sound like Tony Donnelly banging on about fee paying schools and middle classes.

What % of the GB do you think went there or are from the middle classes ?

A bit ironic given most cyber fans views of CQN (Celtic Quaint News).

  9. spikeysauldman on

Why do the players and management show special appreciation to the Standing Section ? Good enough for me.

  11. Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Hogmanay Friday to you all.

One more sleep till we surely move 16 points clear with our closest challengers (sic) having just 6 games to go. Despite all of the off field shenanigans, never lose sight of the fantastically wonderful times that we are witnessing. Here we go…..eight in a row.

    Life’s Good!

  12. Good morning CQN from a dry, cold Garngad

So Broonie is charged with “Not acting in the best interests of Association Football” , where do you start with that????

Ffs let’s look at Sevco, all their players on Sunday rushing at our captain at full time.

Reducing our tickets from 7000 to 800, has an impact on the atmosphere of a derby, of which if you are trying to sell the game to TV is not acting in the best interest of Association football.

    Their fans stabbing European visitors

    Not paying your footballing debts

Constantly singing about wading through Catholics blood- SFA have no balls to stop this but rabbit on about racism, total joke.

    Constantly singing about paedophiles

Constant pitch invasions from their first game of the season

Using the armed forces as puppets to sell Britishness to the deluded- no place in association football

I could go on, that charge is one load of shite and surely any half decent lawyer could pick holes in it.

That’s not even starting with the SFA and all the cheating for 1 club that is not acting in the best interest of Association .

I agree with your sentiment, if we lived in a country that was fair and equal to all I’d be all for it, but we don’t. Remember the Alexander Tonev (the on loan Bulgarian) case? Shay Logan’s word – no other evidence – was enough for the authorities to hand him a 6 game ban, effectively ending his time with us, that’s who we are dealing with.

    ………………………………………………

I have already raised the case of Tonev/Logan on a previous page, in light of Gerrards claim that Kent had claimed that Scott brown had “verbally” abused him…or words to that effect.

My point was obviously due to the “Previous” stance and punishment meted out to Tonev by the SFA SOLELY based on one Guys word ( Logan), Celtic should be very aware of the Huns going down the same route as Logan and Aberdeen, due to what the Huns Kent and Gerrard are claiming.

I see some fellow Tims falling for the mssm line and focusing the current debate on the GB. At a time when our club is under attack from the mssm and the SFA, when our supporters are being attacked and when sevco can run riot at our ground without censure. You are being played big time. Remember to contribute to the GB collection for the homeless this weekend.

  17. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Stairheed..,

There will always be useful idiots in our midst, keeping the support divided is the boards ultimate tool of power.

If they don’t want pyro in the ground then they should not provide pyro during celebrations, we get bullshit about health issues when it suits the agenda, which are then ignored when they want to put on a show.

No pyro means no pyro, it should not mean pyro is ok for the select few to use, i.e. Those the Plc deem fit or special occasions, if they are using the health argument then there are no occasions that should be deemed ok to expose customers to health risks.

  18. I see that the SFA have stated that Kent is NOT Guilty of striking Broonie in the Face or anywhere else, therefore, ALL Players can now throw Punches in matches, and it doent matter if they connect or not ?

Kents actions were DELIBERATE, and yet Players can be Sent Off for a MIS TIMED Tackle ?

For Scott Brown or any other Player to be somehow blamed for violence in the streets after a Match, has no one thought to ask…Why are some PEEPIL Carrying knives etc to a Football Match, or going onto the Streets with a knife etc in the 1st Place ?

Hopefully we will have the SPL won before we are supposed to go back to Ipox for that fixture, never mind NOT accepting Tickets, why don’t celtic just REFUSE to play the fixture…let THEM have the three points, and it would also cost Sevco a few Million £££, in lost gate money, TV Rights etc….just give the Bassa’s the 3 Points….which will be NO Use to THEM ?

    HH

  19. Stairheedrammy on

SFA plans are to appease the press and their Ibrox bretherin by focusing attention away from the onfield violence and poor performance over the season. Expect Broonie to be banned from the Ibrox game if they can wangle it.

  20. Regarding my suggestion that Celtic should REFUSE to Play at Ipox next Month…..

Many of we Celtic supporters of an Older generation, remember 1967, and the “DECIDER” V Racing Club, which became known as The Battle of The River Plate.

I obviously do not have precise figures, but many Celtic supporters did NOT want Celtic to go there for that 3rd “Match”, and not only were Celtic Players assaulted at random, before and during the “Match”, but Bob Kelly then decided to FINE The Celtic players, who were only defending themselves !

Celtic should NEVER have honoured that Fixture, and I can envisage the next game v Sevco at Ipox being much the same, and the aftermath on the streets doesnt bear thinking about ?

IF Celtic took the decision NOT to go to Ipox next Month, what is the worst the SFA can do ?

Yes, give the Hun the 3 points, and probably FINE Celtic FC ?

Any FINE imposed on Celtic by The SFA, wouldnt come close to what Sevco would lose in Revenue…IMHO.

We should threaten to walk off the park on hearing the first anti Catholic or anti Irish song at Ibrox

  24. Did the SFA Cite Motherwell FC…” For not acting in the best interests of Association Football” when scoring THAT Goal at Celtic Park recently …………..Why NOT, if such a “Rule existed at the time of THAT Goal ?

    honestly

  26. Stairheed – Absoloutley I would take our team off the park, and show the whole world that not only is there an issue with racism in football but in this cesspit of a country sectarianism/anti Irish/anti Catholicism is rife from the top down.

As said earlier (sorry can’t remember who) if we removed the players, we would be punished.

Better strategy would be to send the Scottish and League cup application forms blank, problem is it would potentially cost in lost revenues, which could I suspect be covered or improved by inviting teams for frendlies.

The ‘club’ expose the customers to the exact same health risks, if any actually exist, as uncontrolled pyros. How hard is that to understand?

Seriously, if there are health risks then they apply across he board they are not diminished because of who is letting them off, a change in wind direction will expose as many, this cannot be controlled. But obviously you are happy to be collateral damage because of who ignites the pyro.

Ban all pyros or ban none, as simple as that.

  34. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Yes the SRU got it wrong some years ago and there were clouds of smoke all around MF but they have moved on and learned from their mistakes.

The GB won’t learn from their mistakes because of the stupidity / invincibility of youth and the peter pan types in their midst who are shouting louder, louder.
