“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

Aberdeen were Rangers main rivals during their “nine in a row”, finishing second five times. Rangers demise, as a football club in the late 1970s, led to three teams challenging for the title, four if you count Hearts 1986. Could Aberdeen, with a new stadium hopefully, challenge for the title in two or three years? Only if they get the better of Celtic. Anyway the good thing is that the Old Firm is over, and we can revert back (albeit after a century) to being Celtic Football Club first and foremost. Let us raise the bar, not as David Murray did, with mercenaries and EBTs, but as Jock Stein did, by taking the game to a new level.

Don’t really see where you’re coming from. Can’t say it’s ok to go for one but not the other. Just sounds anti-English. I hate their attitude towards us but that would change if we were playing against them and beating them.

I thought the 5 stages of grief had ‘denial’ FIRST , then ‘anger’, then ‘bargaining’ and then ‘depression’ .

I had the misfortune to have to get the bus to Girvan today to pick up Mrs. Blind’s motor from the garage (no lifts to be had no place, shame on youse Abbot and PF).

As we ambled merrily through Maybole, Crosshill, Dailly and then Girvan I lost count of the number of defiantly worn dead parrot strips, five starts and all, being paraded. One particularly jaw dropping sight was Maw, Paw and four weans in various vintages of regalia, proceeding down the main street like a mini Drumcree.

What part of ‘ joined the choir invisible’ don’t they get? Do they realize they’ve four more hells to go through? Am I bad for feeling no pity?

The EPL is a grotesque bubble ripe for bursting. If we got there, we’d have to compete with clubs run by Russian oligarchs and Arab oil sheikhs. There’s no way we could compete with that level of spending without running up massive debt or selling out to an exotic foreign sugar daddy.

As things stand, the EPL is no more sustainable than Rangers (RIP) was during the tenners for fivers era. (thumbsup)

Has to be a typo. Also not sure on the general thrust of the article – we need SPL ‘fan power’ to precpitate our exit? I would hope we would be in charge of our own pro-active strategy rather than at the whim of some Inverness and St Johnstone fans.

This article clouds the cloudy issue I’m afraid. The big story is the financal reality which coorslad alluded to re Derry – rather than pipe-dreaming about the EPL or worse an Atlantic League, we need to find solutions which are creative and realistic to fill CP and get our own house fully tidied first. Only when we have a go-alone shirt sponsorship, an online retail strategy fit for purpose, a leaner squad, a youth policy worth the name, a membership stategy worth consideration, catering for the 20th century (yes, even the 20th) and much more wlll we be in a position to even think about football emigration.

I think Paul67 article is an admission that we will never clean up the Scottish football authorites to deliver an honest environment for us to play in.

The clear plan now will be to bring us down to their level anyone who thinks that a vibrant football environment can exist in Scotland without the huns winning is a seriously deluded fantasist.

I will watch Celtic anywhere at any level and pay for the priviledge but we need to use these developments to get out of Scottish football.

  15. A contributor mentioned that the LOI is ranked higher than the SPL and this is probably due to European results in recent seasons. The suggestion is that Celtic join that league.

Maybe the future could be an amalgamation of SPL, LOI and IFA the Welsh are out as they are part of the English set-up. There would obviously be regional teams as in the case of the successful Celtic Lge in rugby.

In the meantime can we all sit back and relax in the coming season as the Championship is already in the mala for Celtic – anyone really believe this?

  17. Hi Paul67,

Sell-out Saturday .v. the Only Show in Town!

My reply is part of an article I was going to do for the Mag – but it ended up on the back-burner due to the never ending saga (Sevco for short) down Govan way.

We (the Club) have a 3 year window of opportunity to redress much that is wrong with Scottish Football and get our fellow SPL Clubs on side by means of some clever marketing. I don’t favour gate sharing but I do believe we could offer them a much needed financial cash-injection each time they play us.

I have not researched these figures but I would guess that we need to cordon-off some 3K of seats for most visiting Clubs (with the exception of the now defunct outfit). I am pretty sure that if you broke down actual attendances by SPL Visitors, the average would be somewhere in the region of 500-1000 supporters max – hardly cost effective from our point of view.

Here’s the deal: give the visiting SPL Team the 3K tickets for nothing (zilch) – let them sell them @ 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 – bring 2 kids with every adult – whatever scheme they fancy. It would be down to them to capitalise on the income they could derive from handling and selling those 3K tickets (once or twice a season). It might encourage and develop their travelling support to get to other grounds on a more regular basis thanks to our subsidy.

What’s in it for CFC? Well – in exchange for the 3K tickets we get 1K free tickets (over and above the allocation for the away game) at their ground. The 1K ticket income (to CFC) could be used to reduce the cost to our travelling support – e.g. we normally get 3-4K tickets therefore the extra 1K reduces the ticket cost by 20-25%. Cheaper away tickets might encourage a full uptake and better crowds at what will most likely be a match covered by TV.

I doubt it would make any significant difference to CFC cash-flow – but it might encourage better working relations between CFC and the other SPL Clubs (who could gain financially – if they made good use of the scheme).

    What are the benefits?

    1. Hopefully it would get more supporters out to games (home and away).

    2. If the visiting SPL side sold all 3K tickets (based on 3 for 1) – it would mean a £25-30K cash injection at least once a season.

    3. Both Clubs would have some minor benefit from catering/ programmes etc.

    4. TV and Sponsorship get an improved product (less empty seats on TV coverage).

    5. Maybe just maybe – we the supporters might develop a healthier rivalry and camaraderie with our opponents without the scourge of the ex-club these next 3 years.

I am sure there are other benefits that could be similarly utilised – it’s not beyond us to lead the way for the betterment of all SPL Supporters and the overall game in Scotland.

The estimates are that the huns will need a minimum of 30,000 attending their home games paying £20 a head to meet their commitments.

Repeated below with much joy and merriment

    Wages: £5 million

    Running costs: £10 million.

Assuming net profit on merchandise etc. of circa £3 million leaves £12 million to be funded from ticket sales.

Which if we have 20 home games means 30,000 at every one of them paying £20 ( or equivalent in season ticket sales ) which equals £12 million.

Celtic seem to be highly regarded down south as witness to the many invitations to play testimonials etc. Maybe the time will never be better for an invite to move now that Rangers have been banished to the nether regions of football.

Just back from Firhill, and whilst I don’t like to criticise young players, there wasn’t too much to get excited about.

Celtic had a flat back four , with. Mowbray style formation in front of the defence and Rasmussen up front.

In the first half I never quite worked out how the midfield was lining up , and sadly, the players didn’t look to know either.

Josh Thompson was in defence and was poor,as was Blackman and Toshney , who were 6/10

In midfield Rabui had the occasional nice touch , but was easily knocked over and very ineffective,

Jackson Irvine was poor in first half and looked more like an Aussie surfer. In the 2nd, he looked much more comfortable and was tackling like an Aussie rugby player.

Tony Watt looked the real deal, but for the first 70 minutes he was on the left wing, and his impact was diluted. Still , IMHO he was the best player on the park?

Rasmussen was interesting – he looked not bad in the air, but was poor on the ground. However, he did attack the ball in the box when it was in the air, and this is the first time I have seen a Celtic striker do this in recent years.

Bottom line is that with the exception of Watt, I don’t see any of these guys having a long term future at CP , or , in some cases as pro – footballers . Hope I am wrong !
