Small investors in football clubs cannot overpay

1059

Really delighted at the flow of sentiment towards Billy McNeill and the launch of the new frontage of Celtic Park tomorrow.  The place is beginning to look like a 21st Century venue, now we need the shops, restaurants and bars to bring the match-day experience alive.

Were you one of the fans who put £620 (or more) into Celtic shares in 1994?  Around 10,000 did, raising an initial total of around £10m from small investors alone.  It wasn’t an investment, none of us wanted or expected the money back, it was our contribution to Celtic at a time of critical need.

Many small investor-Rangers fans did the same when Newco went to market in December 2012, although one high-profile investor, who coughed up £500k, has asked Dave King to buy him out.

The stark reality facing these shareholders is that if King’s path is followed to a logical conclusion the club will be run into the ground, destroying their investments along with everything else.  I have some sympathy for their position.

King is not interested in buying control of the club, even at the discounted price shares are now available at.  He emailed the £500k investor “Why should any new investor bail out existing investors because they made mistakes in overpaying for their shares. The club needs money not complaining shareholders”.

The price paid by small investors was perhaps the most irrelevant figure to them, they paid the gross figure they could afford, irrespective of price.  The value of the share was irrelevant so to accuse them of making a mistake by overpaying is like criticising the month of March for being too purple.

How the small shareholders feel about this behaviour will not determine what actions the Newco board takes, that will be come down to how easily manipulated people like the Easdales, Mike Ashley and Laxey Partners are.  My information is they are not easily manipulated in the slightest.

    My thoughts on James Forrest

I don’t believe that anyone has offered or will offer anything like £7m

I do believe that there is a black arts war being wages on us and the Hun thinks this kind of back page annoys us

I also think that were anyone to offer that kind of money for him I would personally offer to drive him south.

    And I don’t drive.

    LOL.

I have to agree with this sentiment. Jamesy is a poor man’s McGeady (who himself was infuriatingly inconsistent).

Lets hope that another premier league club sees £6million or £7million as loose change…

  3. A wee story from Wednesday evening. I was feeling down as I knew that Some of the north east CQN lads were having a small babycham etc in Aberdeen toon. Try as a might I couldn’t get a reasonably price room that night anywhere around the city. I got a B&B in Peterhead ( not one of my fav toons), anyhow went on a wee pub crawl, tried a few, nothing special. Until a found this bar called Baileys. Went in ” lager please”, sat at the bar listening to the locals discussing D McInnes getting manager of the year, must be a dons pub I thought until the lassie behind the bar says “whit dae you think aboot im getting top billing”. Eh not for me, I said “Who then” Lennon I said, thinking your in a NE pub putting down a NE manager not very clever. Here here said the customers, the wee man deserved to be manager of the year. Turns out Baileys is a Tim shop.

They told me this story…when Celtic played Peterhead in the Scottish cup a year ago, Neil & Gary Parker popped in for a drink. Soft drink (Neil) Guinness (Gary) both chatted to the locals while signing autographs for over an hour, the perfect guests. As they were about to leave, someone asked…why come into the toon furra a drink, when you could hiv stayed in the hotel wae the players. Neil replied…because of the league we are in we don’t get to see these parts of Scotland! Winked and left. The place was in a up roar when the penny dropped.

So if you find yourself in Peterhead, pop in to Baileys, nice folk.

The Battered Bunnet. Janko will be on big money in Turkey and would be likely to be above Celtics wage structure and is not a prolific scorer.I think he would be a huge risk for us and we would be better playing our youngsters Balde or the fridge or Watt . He also doesnt fit into Celtics recent signing profile as he is 30 and unlikely to increase in value for me I would give him a body swerve.H.H.

  5. Great to see Willie Wallace posting this morning. We hope to have both Tommy Gemmell and Bertie Auld on CQN this month to answer your questions.

CQN Magazine out this evening – we never got it completed last night so running a little late.

    Nat Know-

3rd best or 1st equal. That depends on the transfer fees they attract. Big Vic went for £12m, Aiden for £10m and Gary Hooper for somewhere between £5m and £6m.

I believe Redknapp would outbid the purported £7m for JF and, if James has a good season, I believe his price will go up even further. It’s just guess work but I’d say his transfer fee, when he goes will be higher than FF’s and close to VVD’s.

As TBB commented, his type of injury has a fair prognosis and we should not need to expect, fingers crossed, another poorish injury season.

As for comparing different positions. They all have football transfer evaluations. Goalies do not seem to attract transfer fees in keeping with their worth so we will be luck to see much above £6m for Fraser Forster, IMO. At that price he is hardly worth selling for the money but, then again, try and keep an unhappy player and see where you end up.

So far from comparing bananas with spanners, we are just comparing good players who play different positions; in fetching transfer fees, they have more in common than they have which separates them.

Goalies are not the only fruit.

    ——————————————————————–

OK. So when you say “James Forrest is the best player we have on our books, outwith Forster & Van Dijk” – what you mean is that James has the potential to be sold for a significant amount?

  7. kitalba

I agree with that and don’t feel I was saying anything different.

The monetary value is what people are prepared to pay. The value to Celtic may be something different. For example, we don’t have a great record in sourcing adequate keepers till recently. In most of my supporting life, the Celtic goalie would not have been rated in the Top 3 in his position in the top Scottish division. I hope that, if or when FF goes, we can get someone nearly as good. I’d be surprised if we were able to get someone better than either Artur or Fraser. I’d be surprised if we got anyone as good as David Marshall.

Many people were saying the same thing, that is being said of James Forrest, about Aiden a few years back; “punt him for £3m and I’ll drive him to the airport myself” was not uncommon on CQN. One prominent poster even suggested a straight swap for Liam Lawrence.

Now, I knew that Aiden, if sold, would fetch more. Whether he was worth £10m to the Moscow team is a moot point as he was sold for less. The same is true of Petrov and Wanyama, who did not or have yet to prove their weight in value for the clubs that bought them.

Now, it is in our interests that any player we sell for good-ish money is reasonably successful, otherwise we suffer from the Boumsong syndrome whereby a player can look very good in the SPFL and less than stellar in a more demanding league.

The one time I criticised our club for failing to get value was in the sale of Artur to Fiorentina, where he replaced a French international keeper and recovered his mojo. Wee Shaun was also sold relatively cheaply but his injury record did merit a cut price deal.

  8. JohnnyClash on

    I like James Forrest.

    Yes.

And that he is one of our better players. He unlocks defences, and that is a great asset. He looks for the ball and does not hide. He has greatly reduced his arm-throwing up behaviour but, like Scott Brown’s discipline record, few people have noticed.

Sammi has performed in Europe at a level that James hasn’t come close to.

Yes, I know that he’s much younger and that he may turn out to be a fantastic player for us.

My point was re current ability and I don’t think JF comes close to Sammi.

Villa sourced a player from Crewe, Ashley Westwood, who is fulfilling Stan’s role nicely. Stan is a lovely fella but he is more of a Celtic legend than a Villa one.

Marc Janko, a 6’5″ striker, has played 48 league matches in 3 years, scoring 16 goals, 10 of which in the 1st half of season 2011/12 for Twente.

He has scored 6 league goals in his last 32 league games since January 2012, 2 and a half years ago. (That’s one goal every 5 MONTHS).

  21. HT,

I haven’t read back beyond your latest comments regarding Sammi and James Forrest. I agree with you in the main, although I would hold on to him, because I reckon if anyone offers proper money for him, they must be of the opinion that he will get over his injuries. I would gamble with him for a bit longer (although I believe he suffers from sciatica and I don’t think you do get over that). I would, of course, keep the wonderful Sammi, if only for his performances in Europe, where he is one priceless asset to us.
