Spartak and the long road home

1014

Having disposed of Raith Rovers last night, Celtic have two huge away games, against top of the table Motherwell before a trip to Moscow for a Champions League match against Spartak in six days.

Tonight Spartak play just a few miles from the Ukraine border and have a journey of close to 1000 miles on Saturday.  It is little wonder they, like Celtic, are looking for ways to improve their injury record.

Celtic will travel to Moscow only a few hours after Spartak leave the city of Perm to journey home.  On Tuesday we will be the fresher team.  Could this be the game we break our duck away from home in the Champions League?  If we get it right on the park it will be.

I didn’t read the (incredible) statement by Charles Green until late last night, when I caught it via the excellent analysis by Paul McConville on his Random Thoughts blog.  Mr Green, Paul concludes, is “Either… stupid, which he is not, or he has decided to continue to appeal to his core support”.

There is a third alternative.  Last season we watched Craig Whyte, then Duff and Phelps, embark on a series of unfathomable actions.  Neither party was stupid, nor were their actions necessarily guided by anything as a coordinated appeal; they were simply being buffeted along by circumstances.  No one was in control, had the experience necessary or was party to a deliverable Grand Plan, resulting in a series of random utterances.

Too busy selecting my teams so have only just seen your ” Don`t tell McCoist” lyrics. Excellent” .

Just as well Awe Naw is off line!

  2. Italian football filled with corruption, doping and match fixing, says former Argentina midfielder Matías Almeyda

Matías Almeyda, the former Argentina international, has made a series of startling accusations in his autobiography which claim Italian football is rotten to its core with corruption

Almeyda, who played for Lazio, Parma, Brescia and Inter Milan during an eight-year stay in the country, insists the game in Italy is plagued by corruption, doping and match fixing.

The midfielder also suggests some clubs have fostered worryingly close ties to organised crime syndicates, fuelling a climate of fear among the players.

One of the most alarming stories in the book is that he was hooked up to an intravenous drip before matches during his time at Parma. He is convinced the drips were used to give the players performance enhancing drugs which have done serious long term health damage.

“At Parma we were given an IV [intravenous] drip before games,” wrote Almeyda. “They said it was a mixture of vitamins but before entering the field I was able to jump up as high as the ceiling.

“Players do not ask questions, but then in the following years there are cases of former players dying from heart problems, suffering from muscular issues and more. I think it is the consequence of the things that have been given to them.”

Almeyda, who gives a brutally honest appraisal of his own battle with alcoholism as he reached the end of his career at Inter in the book, goes on to paint a picture of a game where mafia influence stretches wide.

Writing about his time at Parma, Almeyda believes a disagreement with the club’s former president and owner, Stefano Tanzi, led to his house being broken into as a form of intimidation.

He insists he was not the only player worried about his safety at that time, naming the former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic as another who had a similar break in following an argument with Tanzi.

“I had a fight with Stefano Tanzi and several days later I woke up to find my new car was missing from the garage,” he wrote. “Savo Milosevic was also in conflict with the club with a contract as high as mine and the same thing happened.

“One day my wife comes home and hears voices inside. She ran away and called the police. There was a message on the wall, made with machine oil, a message from the mafia. My wife had a premature birth. Following the 2002 World Cup I’ve never been back to Parma.”

Almeyda denies he ever took part in any match fixing, but he suspects several of his team-mates did during a match between Parma and Roma in 2001, a result which meant the latter pipped Juventus to the title.

“Some companions in Parma told us that the Roma players wanted us to lose the game,” he wrote. “I said ‘no’ and the majority responded that way, but on the field I saw that some did not run as usual so I asked to be substituted and went in the locker room. Money? I do not know, they called it a favour…”

  4. As some of us had already intimated, the ‘big’ attendances at Ibrox are a total sham

    Kieran Caw ‏@Kieran_Celtic

Ex-season ticket holders get in free tonight. Also giving away more. These big attendances now mean little.

So how does this work, they are giving away free tickets but are Motherwell not entitled to half the gate? Surely tax implications here also

Oh Charles, i fear HMRC are gonna be all over this scam like a rash!!! #herewegoagain

  5. Last night had many positives, the full debut of Efe, who was excellent and only gave the ball away once in the entire game. Forrest and Dylan were direct and clinical and caused problems for their defence all night and Hooper looked up for it and a yard sharper than he’s looked so far this season.

My one concern, which I repeatedly pointed out to OT67, was the number of occasions that Raith were able to put crosses into our penalty area.

Martin O’Neils teams always impressed me with the collective, concerted efforts to ensure that the ball didn’t reach the danger area.

This is a facet of our game that needs to improve greatly, especially against quality, European opposition.

  7. From tonight`s Evening Times (Chick Young`s ” Only An Excuse” )

“Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday super Alistaaair!Happy birthday to youuu!!!!

Rangers are back! What a birthday present for Coisty. On the day before he hit the big five-o, the glorious Rangers roared to within one point of the top of the highly prestigious Third Division by crushing the extremely mighty giants of Montrose.

What a match it was! The commentator, both summarisers and reporter, i.e. me, who BBC Scotland sent to Ibrox to cover this clash, were all left raving about the youngsters Rangers were playing.

Yes, bumming up youngsters, the last refuge of the desperate, that’s how mediocre a spectacle this was.

And best youngster of all was young Fraser Aird who, for me, is just the sort of player required at Rangers, one with a second name for a first name.

As for the opponents? Well, Montrose can be very pleased that they were rubbish and Rangers gubbed them, for there is no higher accolade in Scottish football than to be utterly thumped by the Teddy Bears.

Of course that was then and this is now and there’s possibly no time like the present to talk about the future and tonight’s match in the Scottish Communities League Cup against SPL leaders, the majestic and magic Motherwell.

Make no mistake, tonight will be a gargantuan struggle, but Stuart McCall MUST ask himself this question – what would be best for the nation: for the Steelmen or the totally sensational Rangers to remain in the Cup?

Mr McCall, I urge you to take a long, hard look in the mirror and remember who and what you are. Rangers did a lot for you, Stuart, I hope you’re remembering that.

    PAT NEVIN

I see Artur Boruc has signed for Southampton. So, he has managed to go from being the ‘Holy Goalie’ to ‘Saint’ in just a few years? Wow! That’s a pretty quick canonisation is it not?

    denis law

Well, you know, I was watching Celtic take on Benfica last week, my old mucker Hugh Sabio used to play for them and I couldn’t help but wonder: does their manager Jorge Jesus look like a young Denis Law or is it that Denis Law looks like an old Jorge Jesus?

    NEIL LENNON

Delighted with how we played, delighted with the chances we created, unhappy we didn’t score more, but that was down to two things, our finishing and Rab Douglas.

I thought Big Rab was just truly magnificent against on Saturday even though he must be pushing about 72 now.

Of course, I’ve known Rab for years, I’ve stood alongside him, played with him in big games for Celtic.

So if I needed cover between the sticks, is Rab the sort of experienced keeper I would have no hesitation in signing?

    No.”

More truth in this than most ” serious” Scottish journalism!

  8. From the CSA

Very interesting regards Kilmarnock away in December

Double standards form the SFA .. and the Kilmarnock issue.

It seems to be double standards by the SFA; nothing seems to change in that respect. It has been reported that the SFA aren’t happy with the investigation into the elbow thrown at a Serbian player by Steven Naismith, it has also been reported that they want to know who reported it to FIFA. And finally they are concerned it has taken so long to be investigated.

Could we not say the same things about the “Zombie Banner” who reported it? And why did it take so long to start an investigation? I can guess who was offended by it; some people were so offended; that they wrote to the First Minister, Alex Salmond., were these same people offended by Paedophile Banners displayed in the 3rdDivision? Did they write to King Alex on that occasion?

I am totally fed up with the people who are offended non-stop by anything that happens concerning the Celtic Support, and in particular “The Green Brigade”. I assume that these people were not actually at the same game as the so-called offensive banner, so they must be getting offended via their TV or computer, easy, turn it off with the touch of one button; problem solved.

The SFA and SPL need to start to get their act together, they are fast becoming the laughing stock of European Football, they are being undermined by Chuck Green on an almost daily basis, the guy need to be put in his place before he causes some serious civil disorder.

We as Celtic Supporters have a decision to make shortly regarding the away match to Kilmarnock on December 8th, the Kilmarnock chairman played his joker when he abstained from the vote to allow Sevco to be parachuted directly into the SPL.

By doing so,he apparently went against the wishes of his own supporters; I’m not actually convinced of that. This coming Sunday our delegates will discuss the situation again. Our original proposal was that any club supporting the admission of Sevco to the SPL would be boycotted; Kilmarnock dodged that vote by abstaining.

I personally will not be attending the match at Kilmarnock in December; I sincerely hope that the vast majority of Celtic supporters do the same, we have never received a welcome in that stadium in all my years of following Celtic, and my memories of the final match of season 2003 will never be erased from my mind.

  9. On paper last night’s game looked like one we could do without with Moscow next week.It was the opposite,Ledley and Kayal got valuable game time,Hooper played with the appetite he had in his first season, and 4 goals. If Ambrose best position is a CB, we look to have unearthed another gem, totally comfortable in MF,and he has pace !.All in all a great exercise.

  10. Got a job from a new estate here in Manchester called Sovereign Point. The streets were named Regal Rd, Stately Lane and Sovereign St.

I was picking up at Viscount Rd and was expecting out own Philvis to answer the door.

Great name though for a new housing estate down Govan way. Ibrox Rd, Orange Crescent. EBT Lane and Sevco New Rd.

  11. TMWTL

The response of the SFA and the SPL to Charles Green is similar to that of a new teacher who allows the Bully early leeway then cannot redeem the situation. The Bully then feels confident enough to do and say as he pleases. Long term, this is not good for the Bully either.

The MSM has surpassed themselves with their pathetic attempts at ‘bigging- up’ Scotland’s newest football club with tales about ‘record attendance for a lower league game’, ‘biggest ever crowd at a Ramsdens Cup tie’ and ‘highest attendance in Scotland this weekend’ type rubbish.

It’s bad enough that Sevco can’t sell-out any of these games when tickets are £15 a go, but when they still can’t sell-out when giving tickets away free – well … that doesn’t make good copy for the Sevcophantic media.

As with Alexandria, they don’t need to have Orange Crescent or Orange Street (birthplace of the great Prince Buster), they can go straight for Orange Parade.

  14. I think I must be the only person who was a bit disappointed in Ambrose. For all hi skill and ability I was hoping for a striker eating heid the ba who would clean everyone out for the ball.

Hope above works. Got it on twitter. I was with a customer on Monday, showed me his ticket for Sevco game on Sunday. Free. He got 25 free tickets from a friend at Ipox. The above twitter link also claims, they are sending out freebies to folk who have not renewed. How many Sevconians actually paid to get in?

I have suspected for some weeks without proof that they have been giving away free tickets. They did all of last year, they gave them to the returning troops also saw last year heard they gave them out at Murray Park to kids and their parents also ST holders whose tickets had expired.

Surely the Zombies FC are still not telling lies, this year they are not inflating share prices just inflating attendances.
