The wife of the regional premier of Catalonia has denounced Muslim incomers for wanting to impose their culture on the region, and a prominent separatist leader has complained of there being “too many foreigners”.
Marta Ferrusola, who is married to the long-standing regional premier, Jordi Pujol, told an audience of elderly Catalans in Girona: “They want to impose their own way. All they know how to say is: ‘Give me something to eat.'”
She claimed that immigrants were the main beneficiaries of social security payments to large families, and were living in houses built by the regional government. “These benefits go to people who do not even know what Catalonia is.
“My husband says he is fed up with having to give them to people from the Maghreb [north Africa] and places like that.”
Catalonia’s churches would soon be overshadowed by mosques, she added.
Mr Pujol said his wife was expressing personal opinions, but added:”Most people feel the same way.”
Her views are echoed in a political memoir by a senior figure in Catalan separatism, the former regional parliamentary president and secretary of the Catalan Republican Left Heribert Barrera, who wrote that the region would “disappear” under the weight of immigration.
“When [the Austrian far right leader Jörg] Haider says that there are too many foreigners in Austria he is not being racist,” he wrote.
Immigrant workers should be progressively expelled from certain regions, he said. He suggested that Spaniards who opposed Catalan separatism were encouraging immigration, to dilute the culture.
Its opponents say such remarks prove that Catalan nationalism is motivated by a deep sense of racial, or at least cultural, superiority.
“These are comments worthy of the extremist right,” said Rafael Ribo, of the United Left party.
A political commentator, Rosa Regas, said: “Mrs Ferrusola has given us a clear example of fascist exclusivism.”
Mass immigration is a recent thing in Catalonia. Only 2% of its people come from outside the country. Most work in Barcelona or on the flower farms in the north.’
