Stick to what you’re good at Celtic

597

Spartak Moscow have appointed Valery Karpin as caretaker manager.  The former Russian international has had an active role in the club since 2008, variously as chief executive and manager.  He took control of the first team when he replaced Michael Laudrup in 2009 until Unai Emeri’s appointment this summer when Karpin returned to his executive role.

He is an experienced pair of hands who is likely to stabilise things after the spirit had been drained from the club.  Spartak are already out of Europe but will pose no less a threat than Inverness when they arrive at Celtic Park next midweek.

Neil Lennon will not be particularly concerned by the impact of Celtic’s defeat by Inverness on Saturday on the league table but the experience will still be arresting.  Celtic have won three of five away games in Europe this season, losing the other two by a single goal, but there is clearly still work to do when faced with a home challenge in the SPL.  Valery Karpin will be keen to prove he can exploit this.

Celtic have established credentials in three areas this season: they can defend adroitly when setup to do so, they are a major threat at set-pieces and they are an effective counter-attacking side.  Any other attributes remain a matter for conjecture.

The first instruction against Spartak should be ‘stick to what you’re good at’.

The huns paid the money to the trust, they didn’t loan it.

The trust then loaned the money to the players.

If the loans are repaid the money goes to the trust, not to the huns.

What would happen to the money if the loans were to be repaid to the trust would depend on what the trust deed said.

  3. Ernie, I have copies of emails and other stuff all about the SFA and their inaction (particularly on our friend Elbows), EUFA, BBC and others. My actions and those of thousands like me are being ignored. Trigger’s Broom FC walked all over rules and regulations. They are still at it. Chuckles meanwhile is consulting the entrails to find a different shafting method for Der deceased Orc support. It will never be challenged, no matter what he comes up with. We are lucky in that we have this and other sites to get at them, and I’m sure the said sites are pored over by the MSM. Lazy buggers that they are, they get their stuff from us. Lazy journalism, to quote Paul 67.

  4. I’m sure KevJungle would be replying to all these remarks about him but he is currently off oot and/or taking an important phone call. :-)

Thanks for posting that. Personally affected by Autism in my family quite recently and quickly realised how little is understood of how it affects entire families and that there is a general lack of info/help out there. Airdrie group looks ideal for the initial support needed. I would love to contribute – will contact them.

    Thanks again.

    I don’t read any of Jabba’s stuff.

Well, not strictly true: I would not pay to read any of Jabba’s stuff/guff/you-choose.

The snag with Jabba is that he’s getting paid by us licence payers for the privilege of being the de facto mouthpiece for Murray & co.

For that’s what he is, despite any protestation to the contrary.

That’s the bit that sticks in my craw.

I’ve complained to the BBC about this a few times down the years, citing the absurd amount of air time they allow to this buffoon. Because, let’s face it, he’s being given the opportunity to have a massive influence on public perceptions. (I’m fairly sure the majority of the football-following public are not informed by CQN and have neither the time nor inclination to find things out for themselves: to a large extent this group relies upon the BBC for (what should be) a balanced view on matters of public interest.)

As someone who enjoys listening to public service radio from time-to-time, I do take some comfort from the recent rise in prominence of guys like Jim Spence and Stuart Cosgrove, both of whom are willing and able to challenge the tosh coming from guys like Jabba and Chico. Fortuitously (and crucially), also, neither of these guy can be accused of having a pro-Celtic bias.

Indeed, I had to chuckle on Saturday evening, when listening to Cosgrove run rings around Jabba: at one point admitting his [Cosgrove’s] own failures as a pundit and pointing out how disappointing he finds it when pundits seem unable to admit to having ever been wrong: a clear dig at one of Jabba’s favourite on air expressions: viz: ‘As I have always said …’

It went straight over the head of Jabba, who used that very phrase not 2 minutes after the aforementioned discussion.

I concur. I don’t like Stephen Fry either. His silly support of Sevco I believe comes from some of their representatives saying you support us on this and we’ll support you on that (some cause, I forget which one).

    It is rather sad.

Stephen Fry the intellectual who claims you can’t have coke without Pepsi.

Actually few people drink both at the same time and many have a preference of one over the other – just like in all of football. Deary me.

  9. If anyone is worried about Barca resting players against Benfica…

When Martin Montoya replaced Dani Alves in the second half for Barca, all 11 players on the field had passed through the club’s academy.

“It’s something that should make us happy. Seven or eight of them are Catalan, we have to be proud,” Vilanova said.

“I did not plan to bring Alves off. He was injured and that’s why I decided to send Montoya in. My priority wasn’t putting 11 homegrown players out there.”

Midfielder Xavi also hailed the club’s La Masia academy.

“It’s extraordinary, especially for those of us that learned to play football at La Masia,” said the 32-year-old, who made his Barca debut in 1998.

“We’re proving and showing the good work that’s being done (in the youth system).

“(Louis) Van Gaal said that his dream was to field 11 homegrown players, and today that dream became a reality.”

For the biggest influence on Keith Richards playing style look no further than Chuck Berry, the good thing about the Stones these days is they are making it cool or acceptable to play into old age which for my own development is a bloody good thing ;)

  13. Stephen Fry : sneeringly superior, quoting epigrams in Classical languages from a script kept off camera, a libertarian for whom everything is ‘okay yah’. The same coinage as Boris the Buffoon.

Wrong ‘uns, as they say here in the sahrf.

  14. Spartak Moscow’s Brazilian players Ari, Rafael Carioca and Welliton were spotted having fun at a bar the night before the game against Dynamo, which they lost 5-1 to see coach Unai Emery sacked.

“Carioca, Ari and Welliton spent 200,000 roubles (nearly $7,000) at Barbados bar. It’s seems everything is OK with discipline at the club,” an entry from Barbados Bar’s Twitter feed said.

The text was followed by a picture showing that the Brazilian clubbers were accompanied by members of Spartak’s administration – deputy general director Roman Askhabadze and sporting director Dmitry Popov.

Ari, who was the only one in the trio to appear on the pitch against Dynamo, hurried to contest the information.

“I didn’t go to the nightclub with Welliton yesterday. I know nothing about it,” he told Sovetsky Sport newspaper.

Meanwhile, Spartak’s coach, Unai Emery, was fired right after the final whistle of Sunday’s encounter at Luzhniki.

The Spaniard, who took charge of the Moscow side over the summer, couldn’t last even until the winter break.

Last season’s runners-up, Spartak currently sit seventh in the home league, having already crashed out of the Champions League with four losses in five games.

  15. Folly Folly-Would be interesting to see if the BBC employed Media House? Singing from the same hymn sheet and all that….

  16. Yes. I agree about playing into old age. Howlin’ Wolf and his contemporaries who survived did just that. Keef is emulating that, and he’s still the best. But the ticket prices? I’m like a dog that won’t let go on this.

    : > )

  17. Folly Folly,

I don’t really care what Jabba says. The man is a disgraceful hack who has backed the wrong horse for purely selfish & greedy reasons & now has nowhere to hide.

What I DO object to is people on CQN giving it the oxygen it doesn’t deserve by posting it on here.

Leave him to howl his tragi-comic nonsense to the moon.

    Ignore him COMPLETELY.

We already know that there is no sense complaining to the BBC.

They are stone deaf to any criticism of their knuckle-cracking stacked deck.

They are the modern equivalent of King Canute.

  19. CELTIC will have to offer at least £700,000 if they are to stand any chance of landing Frank Acheampong, after the Ghanaian international’s club turned down a £625,000 bid from German side Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The 19-year-old Acheampong is currently on trial at Celtic Park having impressed for Buriram United, who play in Thailand’s Premier League, but the club’s owner, Newin Chidchob, has insisted that Acheampong – dubbed the ‘Ghana Messi’ – will not leave the side for a knockdown price.

“The fee [Moenchengladbach] offered wasn’t enough – he is worth more than that.

“There is a lot of interest in Frank, but we signed him when he was 16 and he is a big part of our team. We are in talks with several clubs.

“We want to sell him and won’t let him join any club on loan.”

The diminutive winger is thought to be a target for several Chinese clubs, and was linked with Serie A side Palermo in 2010, although the move never materialised.

Acheampong has scored 17 goals in 56 games for Buriram United and helped his side to fourth last season, taking them to the AFC Champions League Qualifying play-offs.

He should not be on public service media when his views are so obviously compromised and barely coherent.

How can discussing – on a Celtic-minded blog – Jabba’s ill-deserved high public profile and resluting ability to influence (wider) public opinion be described as giving oxygen to his views?

You’ll have no argument from me about Jabba’s chronically biased ‘journalism’.

As others are ‘hinting’: if it looks like a turd and smells like a turd …

However, IMHO it’s right and proper to draw attention to the inappropriateness of his status at BBC Shortbread. One way or another, most of us are paying for this joker’s mortgage and holidays!

Also, anecdotally, the BBC may have a high proportion of knuckle-crunchers and outright huns, but we have every reason not to let them get a free run at this sort of coverage.
