Five years ago when CQN’er Kano was confined to hospital with a debilitating illness Pablophanque was first to issue the call, “We need to raise the money to bring Kano home”. In the weeks which followed the Bring Martin Home campaign launched. The campaign succeeded and then some; the Kano Foundation is its lasting legacy.
While working in Holland in May 2011 Pablophanque took ill suddenly and died a few days later, leaving two young-adult children to deal with matters a long way from home. As the news filtered through of his death, the call went out in the comments section here to raise money to bring his remains home. One day later Pablo’s son was told the money was there and to confirm arrangements.
Pablo’s estate has recently been settled and his son and daughter wanted to repay the generosity shown to them when they needed it most. Mary’s Meals are now in receipt of £4500 from them towards our CQteN Malawi School Kitchen Appeal. It is an enormous gesture by two young people and shows the level of appreciation they have to those who helped them in 2011.
Raising money is hard and I remember telling Pablo his idea was ambitious, to say the least. There has never been a spontaneous movement like Bring Martin Home and the Kano Foundation. Many of those who made the call for Pablo were inspired by Bring Martin Home. The cumulative impact of this generosity is quite stunning.
My thanks to Pablo’s son, daughter and brother for this fantastic support, inspired, as it was, by the wider Celtic community. I never use the ‘Greatest fans in the world’ line, largely as I don’t think there is much competition, but the Celtic support are among the finest human beings you could hope to meet.
Thanks also to everyone who booked a seat or table for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Party at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 14 March, where we hoped to raise the bulk of the money for the school kitchen. If you want know what it’s all about, read Friday’s article.

Big Fraz should get a reality check. He’s better staying at Celtic, as his deficiencies ie confidence, command of his area and dealing with any contact (at all) will get cruelly exposed in the EPL,
TET
I did (with a few misadventures) – walked into the Sevilla fans (coming out their game) at the station on Sunday night with my Celtic sweatshirt and ACGR’s bracelet on.
Thought I was a Betis supporter!
How are the 7 dugs? Missing all the pats on the head I was giving them?
Thanks again for your hospitality at the ‘cave’ and Jan’s chicken sannies kept me going till I hit the Tapas Bar at the Old Square in Seville.
Barca and the entire week was a hoot (well apart from the score).
:-)
VP-Looking at the week before Paddy’s weekend,as i think i am at The Belfry that weekend :}

I agree but can’t see it happening, he’ll follow suit like GH and VW unfortunately, after the barca game he sounded like he was starting to consider his options.

Good point, certainly none of the top teams in the top half would he start for. I would love him to stay but if he’s gonna go I would prefer it to happen in jan as don’t want to go through qualifiers next summer with a new goalkeeper finding his feet.

I just think you’re better than guy who chips around insults

Good meeting you last week.
And before I sign off for the night I can only once again say that Jonathon and Sara’s gesture has brought a tear to my eye. I mind a chat I had with Stephen many years ago about money. His kids have lived up to his ideals.

I’m not a huge fan …still think he’s suspect under a high ball ….which is nonsense as he’s a giant …great shot stopper and very good and filling the goal on a one on one

I’ve read his post again, and I was actually restrained…….incidentally, I’m assuming your rebuke has nothing to do with my views yesterday being at variance with yours……?

ACGR sent me text Sunday night – said the ‘Hootenanny Fleg’ made an appearance somewhere on the CL coverage.
Anyone got a link to that or the 3 of us doing the ‘Huddle’ (when we were making a comeback)?

‘what he is’.
Would that be disapproval of my tasteless Cameron gag along the lines of previously being told to go ‘where I belong’?

True but he’s the best we have at the moment, I’ve been thinking of replacements for him and can’t think of any long term projects. Given as a short term solution possibly but he would only have another 2-3 seasons I think.
What an absolutely outstanding gesture by the Reynolds family,
Even more I believe they are Hillfooters :-) (family will get it).

You too Mhate – pity we didn’t have more time to chat – the company and patter was great. Plans in the pipeline for next European sortie! :-)
Very interesting news from Spain, and possibly difficult to sweep under the carpet, because if one club gets ‘done’ it will be very hard to justify letting the others off.
However, it’s complicated.
The best explanation I have seen so far is here http://deportes.elpais.com/deportes/2013/12/16/actualidad/1387211353_097209.html
El País is not without its faults, but it’s a serious newspaper. Six first division clubs are involved and one second division outfit, Hércules. But there are three groups, which you can draw up based on the nature of the complaint the European Commission is raising.
First, the group that includes Real Madrid and Barcelona, along with Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna. Years ago, clubs were obliged to form limited companies (this isn’t a time for clumpany jokes, stop it yous). These four clubs were granted an exemption with the passing of a new law in Spain in 1990. But this, complainants argue, gives them an unfair advantage because it gives them tax advantages. The article in El País says this is tantamount to allowing them to operate as though they were not-for-profit organisations.
A second group comprises the three Valencian clubs: Hércules, Elche and Valencia. The case against is that the regional government stood as a guarantor on loans totalling EUR 118 million paid to the three clubs in July 2011. No money has been paid back by the football clubs, so the regional government is having to cough up.
In the third group, Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid make a reappearance. The charge this time is that the football clubs have received unfair help from their city authorities. The authorities in Madrid gifted land at Valdebebas for Real Madrid to build a new training ground, modestly called Real Madrid City. It opened in 2003. Until then, the team trained at a site much nearer the Bernabéu, but the bold Florentino Pérez managed to sell that to some “very friendly” buyers for a reputed EUR 480 million. The Bilbao authorities are accused of chipping in for the new extension work on the San Mamés stadium.
The Spanish government has a year in which to present a defence against these accusations. It has said it will defend all seven clubs. The European Commissioner who is making the accusations and who wants to hold everyone to account is Joaquín Almunia, commissioner for competition. Mr Almunia is from Bilbao. He’s a fully paid up season book holder at Athletic Bilbao.

Apologies…..I thought you were being personal, but not the case….and I’m pleased about that….since you are one of the good ghuys IMO
Don’t know about a rebuild, I’d prefer to improve what we have at our disposal, add two new players, (if FF goes), remember the previous squad had a couple of cracks at European football before they made their stamp, I’d like to give the current squad rest of season to settle and show us their best next season.
The article by Andy Muirhead on Scotzine could well have been penned by many on CQN until the mask really slips in the third to last paragraph:

Very interesting. I wonder if Celtic will come under scrutiny for the financial assistance that we’ve received from the Scottish government :-)
Is there anything actually illegal in all of this?

Javier Solana is Spanish and a very dark and deeply involved politician from all sorts of different angles. Constance Cumbey really put him in the spotlight.
If there is corruption, I’d expect him to be somewhere close to it, politically.

The Spanish government says no. The commissioner for competition in the European Union believes all three activities are in breach of competition laws. He is a long-time (lifetime) political opponent of the incumbent government. He was the socialist candidate to be prime minister in 2000, but lost to the Popular Party.
The head of the Valencia regional government who made the call on the loans to the football clubs there, Francisco Camps, is also a Popular Party man.
67Heaven
Oh no, that was downright corruption and cheating on a grand scale :-)
