The difficult January transfer window

372

The script was written. Dedryck Boyata was destined to open the scoring against Hamilton Accies yesterday.  The only surprise was that this wasn’t followed by ‘a Dedryck moment’, as he mis-controlled for an equaliser.  Brendan now has some big decisions to make about the player, but with Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry injured, we are down to only two fit central defenders heading into the games against Suduva and Newco, the latter after the transfer window closes (Marvin Compper isn’t even in the debate).

We continually hear that January is a difficult time to sign players.  That being the case, we might get as much money for Dedryck then as now.  I would also be concerned about signing a player a day or two before throwing him into an atmospheric (cough) capacity game.  Especially if he is young.

Brendan has made his thoughts known on our defending this season, but yesterday’s footage from Fir Park will give him some ideas for this Sunday’s game.  With so much in play, you feel there is a pivotal week ahead.

I’ve e mailed you an update.

I wish you had gone to the SFO but the line we were bound by was provenance of the material .

Four years ago that was a bigger issue than now and if you remember I lost my cool at being bound by it in Dec 2016 because your discovery of the CFCB rules which gave the resolution teeth, provided the way around that.

Getting around the provenance issue caused us a lot of work..

  4. I will say one thing about Sevco, they sure don’t hang about when it comes to signing players,13 so far,I know they have to stop us from getting 8 or 10 in a row,our club full of Rumours, bad p r department, but I don’t blame them, Lawell is calling all the shots, but he is on a shoogle nail, along with a few others,if God forbid Sevco win the league this season, with Brendan Rodgers leaving to, hopefully the Rebels appear again ,and they can try and get a hands on Chairman or Women to take over the Club, maybe not a bad idea to have as be a few women on the board of directors, look at Ann Budge at Hearts, running the club well new main Stand etc so go for it ladies.

  5. Aye – look at Hearts…

    – Barely escaped liquidation

    – Stadium refurb massively over budget

    – Stadium project delayed for so long they had to play at Murrayfield

    – Just sold their main goal scorer

    – Manager in hospital

    – Fans with faces like well-skelpt arses

    Aye…

It remains to be seen whether Gerrard has signed quality or quantity. From what I saw of them v Motherwell , it looks like quantity.

    @ GLENDALYSTONSILS on 28TH AUGUST 2018 11:43 AM

I think the fact that they are in the last round of the Europa League qualification and have a good shot of qualifying evidences that they have bought quality as well.

  8. How come the team we play in the last round of the qualifiers for the Europa, are called a “Pub Team”?.Did they get byes all the way through and not play top quality like the Huns did ?

  9. TURKEYBHOY @ 11:16 AM,

Think debating spend and how it’s accounted for is a kinda circular argument…

For the record, think you 0.5-1 Million out on a few, but whits a Million between fhriends.

The main point is, your post puts a lie to the fact recruitment has been bad under BR.

The value of those players are way above the 25 Million paid.

She you add to that the 25 Million plus that BR and his coaches have added to the Delia squad.

When you add to that the 20 or so “not Cellic class” players he got off the wage bill we are talking excellent squad management in the first two Seasons.

The football deparment should have been backed to the hilt* during this summer’s transfer window.

    Painful Lesson Learned I Hope

*The hilt does not include putting our grand old Club in financial jeopardy…

    Hail Hail

    @ TURKEYBHOY on 28TH AUGUST 2018 11:51 AM

Care to provide a source? You have listed a bunch of figures. I noted that I was referencing the accounts. You have referenced?

  11. We keep hearing that it is “difficult” to get signings done.

Rangers have managed to complete 13 times this window.

Yes – they are in a slightly different market. But they are still recruiting from 2nd tier European leagues – Croatia, France D2 etc and also from EPL loans and EPL signings where appropriate (Goldson). In effect, similar markets to those that we are (allegedly) looking in.

There is a lot of sneering at the huns on here, but they are going about their business very effectively and their European performances have reflected that.

On Sunday I expect them to launch high balls to Lafferty (6’4″) or potentially even the guy from Roma (6’3″). At set pieces they will look to throw Goldson (6’3″) and Katic (6’4″) into our box too.

We have been humiliated at set pieces by AEK and now Suduva in the last 2 weeks, and have very little real height across our team. I suspect they will score against us on Sunday and we will be dragged into a sh!tf!ght.

The arrogance on here is misplaced – they have their house in order on the park. We do not.

  12. CHAIRBHOY,

    I rounded quite a few up,each way.

I have never criticised Brendans spend.Just putting the figures he has HAD to spend out there.£ 30 million is a lot of money for us,even with CL money.

We have guys on here regularly telling me Brendan has not been backed. The figures say otherwise. But my whole point of this ,is the one I keep saying. In that spend, look at the defenders he has brought in during his 2 years.I can keep saying it,but whats the point.People have closed minds,or cant think for themselves.

  13. THE HANDS CANT HIT,

Really?Thats your answer to the figures I provided. What, you dont believe them?.Not many with a clue would contradict the transfer fees, but it seems you would.Says it all really.I have a giant dumb dug here looking at me,and I would probably get more sense out of her.Thats me finished debating with you on this subject.Waste of my time.

  14. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ TURKEYBHOY on 28TH AUGUST 2018 12:05 PM

I think your answer speaks for itself.

  15. Luxcelt – you obviously haven’t seen Sevco play this season. They’re garbage. Their defence is a disaster, meaning their buying has also been woeful. Every cross has them panicking. Going forward, there’s nothing through the middle cos Jack and Arfield have no flair. They get the ball wide and fire it into the middle. They might even beat us next Sunday because of the current state of our defence (unlikely, but anything is possible) but they won’t win the league. We will.

  16. TURKEYBHOY @ 12:00 PM,

Yes, from what I’ve read you’ve argued the transfer budget has been decent and haven’t been overly critical of the players brought in.

For me it is about the overall squad management, which I believe has been very good up until now.

I think the recruitment thing stems from something (that has been touched on but) we haven’t really discussed on here and I’m happy with that.

What my issue is, things went wrong in January with two players who should have been established first team players by now…

    Namely Musonda and Compper…

Now if you look at Hearts… Berra got injured the Manager gets a replacement Centre Half

If you look at Sevco… Murphy got injured the Manager gets a replacement winger

At Celtic we have a croaked CH and a playmaker that didn’t work out… TUFF!!

Just the way I see it, know you always do but
