The difficult January transfer window

372

The script was written. Dedryck Boyata was destined to open the scoring against Hamilton Accies yesterday.  The only surprise was that this wasn’t followed by ‘a Dedryck moment’, as he mis-controlled for an equaliser.  Brendan now has some big decisions to make about the player, but with Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry injured, we are down to only two fit central defenders heading into the games against Suduva and Newco, the latter after the transfer window closes (Marvin Compper isn’t even in the debate).

We continually hear that January is a difficult time to sign players.  That being the case, we might get as much money for Dedryck then as now.  I would also be concerned about signing a player a day or two before throwing him into an atmospheric (cough) capacity game.  Especially if he is young.

Brendan has made his thoughts known on our defending this season, but yesterday’s footage from Fir Park will give him some ideas for this Sunday’s game.  With so much in play, you feel there is a pivotal week ahead.

“If you read my post Brendan has been given almost £ 30 million in 2 years. Not a bad total from a Board that dont back him.”

I saw this post earlier in the thread. It’s a claim that you have now repeated on more that one occasion with no evidence to back it up. BR spent £7m in his first season- this includes the Hayes transfer as he was signed prior to 30 June- that number is taken from the accounts to 30 June 2017.

Are you trying to argue that Brendan has spent £23m in his second season? Even taking the OE transfer of £9m and treating it as an up front payment (which it won’t be), still doesn’t get you close.

  11. That’s a very frank interview with David Fernandez in the article on here, fair play to him for being so honest. He looked a very talented signing at the time . We had some great players and big personalities then and obviously he had difficulty with that.

We used to joke that big Sutton probably destroyed him in the dressing room banter but looks like his issues were deeper than that.

If you go by the numbers on Celtic Wiki we have spent £12.55m net since BR took over as manager. £24.9m spent, £12.25m received.

The accounts for BR’s first year show a spend of £7m for the year and £5.2m net. Those have to be the most accurate figures.

The spent figure on Celtic wiki appears high as they are taking the £9m spend on OE as an up front payment. This surely must the final figure with add-ons and not an up front payment (there is no way that there are no add-ons associated with the purchase of OE given his age and potential and, if there are, they would be included in fee quote, just like Sinclair’s transfer fee).

The new accounts will add clarity to the situation I’m sure.

What I am saying about the money Brendan has spent is there in black and white. Its not hard to check.Maybe it does not suit your agenda.I would put it down here for you,but I checked, you do the same. Its easy.£ 26.9 million + loan payments and wages.

Like so many, just prattle on about what you THINK.Check the facts. And figures.

  15. Rangers: Former players and staff urged to seek tax advice over EBTs

    From the sectionRangers

Former Rangers players and staff have been contacted over tax liabilities

Former Rangers players and staff paid through an offshore trust have been told they have weeks to approach the taxman over a settlement or face an even bigger bill.

Last year the Supreme Court upheld a Court of Session ruling that £47m paid to Rangers employees between 2001-2010 was liable for tax.

Now beneficiaries of the Employee Benefit Trusts (EBTs), many of whom were led to believe these were loans that would never have to be repaid, are being warned to seek “urgent advice”.

BBC Scotland has seen a letter sent earlier this month by Trident Trust, a Jersey-based company, which paints a stark picture.

The letter says: “HMRC has confirmed that it will seek to recover all income tax found by the Supreme Court to be due and that, where HMRC is unable to recover the tax from the employer, it may transfer the liability for unpaid tax…to employees or former employees.”

While HM Revenue and Customs can still pursue BDO – the liquidators of RFC 2012 Plc – for a portion of what the company owed, more could be salvaged by pursuing the former employees.

HMRC wins Rangers ‘big tax case’ ruling

    Who were the EBT beneficiaries?

That could put many on the hook for hundreds of thousands or even millions of pounds.

Former captain Barry Ferguson received £2.5m in EBT payments, German goalkeeper Stefan Klos £2m and former manager – and current Scotland boss – Alex McLeish £1.7m, while former owner Sir David Murray received £6.3m.

And time could be running out to try to negotiate a deal, according to the trust’s letter.

The trust says further charges will be applied by HMRC if tax liabilities have not been settled by 5 April next year.

And to do that, it says, those in question will have to approach HMRC by 30 September this year.

The letter adds: “If you do not come forward voluntarily and seek to settle on preferential terms, HMRC could well pursue you directly and make an assessment on a less favourable basis.”

You do realise that the figures quoted for BR’s first year come from Celtic’s accounts? There is no more authoritative source than that. And based on those accounts, we spent £7m (£5.2m) net. That means in the proceeding year (according to your figures), we spent about £23m. Are you arguing that we have spent £23m in a year?

Sounds like a duh! kinda statement but can also be read as an appeal for the refs to be careful about awarding free kicks against them…

  18. Would be happy with Harold Moukoudi and potentially John Terry for a season if his attitude was right (even just to help coach the many projects we have if his legs weren’t up to playing).

I suspect we’ll get nobody, or a loan signing.

Here’s hoping “The Belgian” scores from a free kick on Sunday.

    For us…

  20. In terms of numbers, 5 CB’s is enough. If Boyata stays I don’t see how we have room for anybody else.

The ideal would be getting rid of Compper and Boyata and bringing 2 in but that’s unlikely.

I think Paul is suggesting we are probably going to end up sticking with what we have.

We’d still be short at central midfield. I hope these rumours about the Brazilian lad at City are correct.
