The difficult January transfer window

372

The script was written. Dedryck Boyata was destined to open the scoring against Hamilton Accies yesterday.  The only surprise was that this wasn’t followed by ‘a Dedryck moment’, as he mis-controlled for an equaliser.  Brendan now has some big decisions to make about the player, but with Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry injured, we are down to only two fit central defenders heading into the games against Suduva and Newco, the latter after the transfer window closes (Marvin Compper isn’t even in the debate).

We continually hear that January is a difficult time to sign players.  That being the case, we might get as much money for Dedryck then as now.  I would also be concerned about signing a player a day or two before throwing him into an atmospheric (cough) capacity game.  Especially if he is young.

Brendan has made his thoughts known on our defending this season, but yesterday’s footage from Fir Park will give him some ideas for this Sunday’s game.  With so much in play, you feel there is a pivotal week ahead.

Yes I do believe that they had a meeting.I believe Brendan got his budget.Bear in mind he said himself,he was delighted with the January window, the Board backed him.He got Morgan,Edouarde, early on.All we know about until the Mc Ginn farce, where we offered 2 million, which everyone on here agreed with at the time.My whole point has been, where were the bids for defenders.Never heard of one.Never a mention, until the Boyata episode. If you read my post Brendan has been given almost £ 30 million in 2 years. Not a bad total from a Board that dont back him.

I refuse to make scapegoats out of people because its the popular thing to do.I have no time for any Board member, never concern me,but just to lump every wrong on someone is not on.Not with me.

  2. Just seen highlights, another assault on KT , with no red card. The big plus for me was MD’s attitude and performance.Yes he has had better games, but he is much sharper after a couple of games, and seeing him sprinting off the park to take a quick shy, was the attitude of a guy who is bursting to play and making up for lost time.Give him the service next week and he will destroy Sevco.

There is another possibility why Dembele seemed to put in extra effort on Sunday.

The transfer window is still open and he is trying to impress suitors.

He’s an honest boy and done a job for the team. I doubt any suitors will watch him against Hamilton. Regardless, he won’t be sold in this window.

    Just a view:

Boyata will sign a new contract probably 3 years stay for this season then go to EPL next summer

    My thinking:

The EPL is the most high profile (I did not say best) league in the world – Sky have made sure of that

Its where “good” footballers want to be seen plus the money is huge – it’s where Boyata wants to play

The Turkey and Spain options are probably genuine but probably peddled by his agent only because the EPL is closed – and the agent wants a deal now to make sure he gets his %

I wrote on hear before that I agreed with Sutton and we should hunt Boyata for not playing in Athens

I also said that in the absence of a decent replacement that I would eat Humble Pie and keep him

    I know double standards

I am currently eating Humble Pie a great big piece

Boyata is the best Central Defender we have at the club

We have a better chance of winning the league with im than without him

    More Humble Pie please

Hard to know what Boyata will do …

As always, I am talking about general principles, and not about any specific country or players..

in many sports, players’ contracts are insured, so if the player gets injured and cant play, he still gets paid. However, increasingly, the cost of that insurance is becoming prohibitive. And, typically, insurers wont insure beyond the term of a contract.

So, if DB doesn’t sign a new agreement, either with Celtic, or as a Bosman with someone else, and gets injured in the second half of the season, he runs a big risk … no new contract, and no insurer to compensate him if he gets injured before he signs with a new club.

Of course, the reason some athletes are taking this risk is because, instead of his new club paying a fee to his old club, that money is sometimes basically converted into a signing bonus for the player (and/or amortized over the length of the contract as higher weekly wages). That amount can be substantial

If someone was willing to pay Celtic 9million for Boyata, the player may choose to hold off and sign a new contract in the summer, and try to scoop some or all of that 9 million for himself.

I should say that this is NOT my area of practice,so am no expert in this area. but have had some more minor dealings, and a friend’s dad is one of the top hockey agents, so have had some discussions about how this works,

sorry … insuring contracts is not the more exciting topic… and probably not what most want to talk about on a footballl blog … but, CQN, more than most blogs, seems to get that what goes on off the pitch has a tremendous impact on what happens on the pitch …

  10. MARADOMINIC on 27TH AUGUST 2018 1:26 PM

Res 12 was dead the minute it was taken away from discussion at original AGM. This told you all you needed to know about Celtic. They wanted it kicked into long grass. Strung Res 12 boys along from the start. No intention of doing anything. Afewt 6 years still not one thing done about New club getting into league or into Europe when they don’t quaify for either. No clainm to get titles stripped . No stating it is a new club. Only positive thing to happen in 6 years was getting BR in and giving him a little money to improve team…this because we lost semi-final to Ibrox team and emptied seats

    -===============

    Some information:

Res12 was never about stopping a new club getting into a league or into Europe or title stripping. There never was any locus for Celtic to do any of that even if they wanted to and in a unique industry that depends on having rivals rather than killing them off, stopping a new club from Ibrox staying in Scottish football was simply bad business for the football industry and beyond Celtic’s power to accomplish. Similarly there was no locus for Celtic on title stripping or even on new club as these were SPL and SFA matters where other clubs had a vote.

All that Res12 asked was that UEFA CFCB investigate events surrounding the UEFA licensing process in 2011, but unlike the other objectives you attach to it, it had locus because shareholders could claim that if a licence was improperly granted then that denied Celtic access to CL money with impact on share value and the Celtic Board have a fiduciary duty to protect that value.

Thus they could not kick Res12 into touch and if you read their official response to the resolution it was that it was unnecessary and on those grounds they would vote it down but their preference was to have it withdrawn.

That was resisted because there was sufficient evidence from Charlotte Fakeover leaks to suggest that at the monitoring points in June and September porkies had been told to UEFA. On those grounds an adjournment kept the issue alive and gave time to establish what did take place.

Now that has taken as long as it has (hence patience) because as understanding of the intent of UEFA FFP rules on tax overdue grew as result of clarification coming from the later CAS cases involving Malaga and Giannina (of which how many folk actually took the time to check when they were mentioned on CQN? ) and the means of collection that HMRC adopted was understood better and recently and significantly other information coming to light, that adjournment was the correct decision for Res12.

The correct decision because that time and how it has been used since, has in a sense rendered Res12 redundant, in that what any investigation by UEFA CFCB or SFA using the Compliance Officer and JPDT route might come up with for all of 2011 with impact into 2012 and LNS, is now pretty well a known..

That is where we are, which is where we would have been had Res12 been passed, but no where near had it not been adjourned. It is what happens next that will be important for Celtic and Scottish football.

The adjournment not only gave Res12 time, it gave the shareholders pursuing it authority to ask questions of SFA and UEFA that had to be answered and if those answers only led to more questions (and they did) that authority allowed them in turn to be asked.

I hope based on that that information that you might reconsider your ideas about the adjournment about Res12 and perhaps who was playing whom.

How many top centre halves are around at the moment? They are a precious commodity these days. I watched Manchester City on Saturday, Kompany was shocking. The weekend before the Arsenal and Chelsea defenders weren’t much better. Most of the top teams in Europe are screaming out for a top centre half. I bet a few are regretting not paying the money for big Virgil.

    ===========

In hindsight yes but these clubs have their procedures and that is they are happy to let a Southampton take the risk on signing an ‘SPL player’ and then battle it out for him if he proves himself there. To us that was a formality but whats new!

So there is method in the madness (sometimes) but methods should always be under scrutiny and refined/applied on a case by case basis. It’d have saved Liverpool £50m! Big Wanyama would also have been a great fit for Man Utd at the time he was leaving us but who knows if he was even on their radar.

  15. THE HANDS CANT HIT@12=58

I cannot understand what our “strategy” is from our actions. The only conclusion I have is that we do not have one; we are reactive (to crisis) as opposed to proactive in pushing the club and football team forward.

    Nail on the head.

Our board seem to operate on a maintenance policy.

This transfer window debacle is part of our rinse and repeat cycle.

I also think our team play is similar.

  16. David17,

Outside of the goalkeeper, Central Defenders are usually the most criticised – and often pilloried – players in a team. They don’t do a glamorous job, often not venturing over the half-way line, except for set-pieces, yet many make goal preventing challenges which keep their teams in a game. Midfielders and strikers only need to score one from a number of chances to be a hero. A Central Defender only has to lose, or mis-time, one challenge to become the “escapegoat” ? for a team’s support.

An outstanding Central Defender can win a game for his team without scoring a goal. So can a good one, but it’s more often the mistakes which are highlighted. ?

  20. Just thinking, all through the summer Chris ‘Union’ Jack gave us updates on the progress of his beloved ‘Gers’’. Before a ball was even kicked in earnest, Chris informed us that ‘The Light Blues’ would play in the style of Steven Gerrard this season. Having watched yesterday’s game at Fir Park, Goldson has taken the message to heart judging by the first goal. I hope other team members will follow suit, starting on Sunday.

*Just back from a 10 day trip down tae former klan country where the evidence of trumpet supporters was very strong 2 years ago but equally missing this time

This is exactly how I feel re DB, when Liam Miller GRHS chose manure over us the various Celtic sites were apoplectic about it considering that not only was he an up and coming star but we had nurtured him through all his injury problems, MON immediately dropped him from the squad but not only did he recall him to the bench in the NOU Camp and 4 days later in hades he also put him on.

He continued coming off the bench in the following weeks and actually made a start over in Villarreal on April 14, back to the bench again until the final game of the league campaign, Henrik’s farewell, and cup final where he was omitted, still managed to get himself a league winners medal though.

There are some here that like tae equate the Blessed Brendan with the equally Blessed MON so let’s give him the benefit of the doubt as we have games to win.

These are changed days fae when Bob Kelly saw Willie Goldie standing at a bus stop with his scarf on and not only had the driver stop and pick him up he also had oul Jimmy play him at broomfield, his only game where he contrived tae throw 2 intae the net, he was freed less than 4 weeks later.

Or replacing the wee mhan with inside forward Bobby Craig, a player I rated BTW who had never played on the wing in his then lengthy career, in the SC Final replay.

PL disnae pick the team, plan tactics, give pre and half time match talks or lead the huddle.

So, Comppner is “not part of the debate”?

I would have thought that “Morton” is very much part of it.

Written about on here as part of the forward planning that would have us in good shape for the CL qualifiers six months down the road. Unknown and unheralded by all but a select few, and indeed unseen by the vast majority of Celtic supporters. Even the Green Brigade haven’t heard of him, otherwise they would have made up a banner about him a long time ago. (“Marvin should never wear the Hoops again, not ever!”)

  31. From the BBC website. by Al Lamont, who, incidentally, was the other BBC employee who was able to attend Rangers AGM, when press were banned, as he was a shareholder.

Former Rangers players and staff have been contacted over tax liabilities

Former Rangers players and staff paid through an offshore trust have been told they have weeks to approach the taxman over a settlement or face an even bigger bill.

Last year the Supreme Court upheld a Court of Session ruling that £47m paid to Rangers employees between 2001-2010 was liable for tax.

Now beneficiaries of the Employee Benefit Trusts (EBTs), many of whom were led to believe these were loans that would never have to be repaid, are being warned to seek “urgent advice”.

BBC Scotland has seen a letter sent earlier this month by Trident Trust, a Jersey-based company, which paints a stark picture.

The letter says: “HMRC has confirmed that it will seek to recover all income tax found by the Supreme Court to be due and that, where HMRC is unable to recover the tax from the employer, it may transfer the liability for unpaid tax…to employees or former employees.”

While HM Revenue and Customs can still pursue BDO – the liquidators of RFC 2012 Plc – for a portion of what the company owed, more could be salvaged by pursuing the former employees.

HMRC wins Rangers ‘big tax case’ ruling

    Who were the EBT beneficiaries?

That could put many on the hook for hundreds of thousands or even millions of pounds.

Former captain Barry Ferguson received £2.5m in EBT payments, German goalkeeper Stefan Klos £2m and former manager – and current Scotland boss – Alex McLeish £1.7m, while former owner Sir David Murray received £6.3m.

And time could be running out to try to negotiate a deal, according to the trust’s letter.

The trust says further charges will be applied by HMRC if tax liabilities have not been settled by 5 April next year.

And to do that, it says, those in question will have to approach HMRC by 30 September this year.

The letter adds: “If you do not come forward voluntarily and seek to settle on preferential terms, HMRC could well pursue you directly and make an assessment on a less favourable basis.”

Trident Trust stresses it is not offering advice, rather urging the players and staff involved to seek expert advice on how to deal with the situation.

HMRC said: “Follower notice (FN) legislation says that HMRC has 12 months to issue FNs following a final decision. The final decision in Rangers was on 5 July 2017. We have looked at a range of schemes where the principles at stake were similar, and follower notices have been issued where appropriate.”

BBC Scotland has contacted Trident for a response.
