The language of defeat, crowd-sourced media management

1075

Speaking at the weekend, Kenny McDowell looked ahead to the cup semi-final saying “We aren’t going into the game fearing a big defeat.  If anything we are going into the game knowing we’ll have to be on our guard and wary of that, but we are not going into it fearing of losing by a big score-line”.

Admitting that he’s wary about the prospect of a big defeat is the last thing you want your manager to say publicly as you prepare for a cup tie.  It conditions everyone to the prospect of defeat.

From Ronny, it’s all positive: “It’s going to be fun.

“It’s good that this is a big game, so we won’t be underestimating the opponent.

“We are in a good position, we can win everything and that motivates.”

Big games, big results, are often won in the head before a team takes to the field.  You win because you know you’re going to win, because you know you can rely on your team-mates.  You know that if you do your job correctly, there is nothing the opposition can do, short of elbowing you in the face and hope you retaliate.

No game of football is easy and Ronny and the players will know they will have to work for anything they get on Sunday, but the preparatory work has been done.  The players are fit, rested and can’t wait for Sunday.

On a side note, I can’t believe how thoroughly the New Club advert has penetrated media coverage this week.  On top of Motivator McDowell, can you imagine ‘ex-players’, pundits and fans having to explain their existence and relevance in the run up to a semi-final?  This wasn’t a crowd-source advert, it was crowd-sourced media management, which ran rings around the best paid PRs in the business.

Let me know (celticquicknews@gmail.com) if you want a ticket to CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March – Cup Final weekend, as it happens, or you can buy a ticket at the bottom of this page.  I’m in the mood now.

    Agree with all of that.

The mib is the big worry for me.

Do you remember the dreadful tackles by Boyd and Miller against Hearts that merited a yellow only by Thomson?

That could well be the standard of refereeing we will get.

Unless it’s us that are going over the top, then, straight red of course.

  4. I will take 1-0.

Cue, the smsm saying they are almost as good as us and deserve their place at the top table blah blah blah.

I’m with you, I think it’ll be close, possibly only one goal in it. I think we’ll win, and that’s the main thing, winning by any means, performance is irrelevant in a semi final.

  9. Celtic need to get rid of more players before we can bring some in.

I imagine Tonev, Wakaso, Rogic, Balde, Pukki & Frindjonsson will all be gone come the summer.

I think this may be the post you a referring to at 12:01 hours on 27 December 2012 I think you will find it contradicts your sooo specific recollection of it. You may also find there are other posts on this particular page from posters that were actually at the game that allude to the conduct of some sections of the support. If it pleases you to post otherwise to suit your agenda fair enough

If you also recall Celtics chief executive also thought it prudent to apologise for the behaviour the following day

Anyway enjoy the rest of your day and I don’t suppose there is any chance of meeting you at the old firm game on Sunday

  12. Paul – you’ve been guilty of over confidence before.

We are well capable of losing this game, as unpalatable as it sounds.

I think we’ll win 2-1 with them getting the first goal.

  13. Regarding Sunday…..

Hibernian have put 4 goals past Sevco twice this season playing high tempo fitba. Sevco have tried and failed twice to kick them aff the pitch.

The only game they lost was the first game of the season in the diddy, diddy cup and Hibs should have won.

If we want to beat Sevco is style we play fast attacking fitba on the deck. We are miles better than Hibs and they put 4 past them. I would be expecting at least 3 goals on Sunday and I don;t think that is being disrespectful or daft.

From what I have seen of Sevco and it is only really the Hearts and Hibs games against them they tire late on in matches. Will not playing in 3 weeks help them? I think early on it might but late on in the game they will toil. Watch out for them pulling muscles because I believe their training isn;t up to much and the lack of match sharpness will be a worry for them. Celtic are well rested have key players back in the squad and also have a bit of momentum after a couple of good solid wins after our wee jaunt to the Canaries.

The key for me is that we are not brought down to their level. We should go out and play our own game and not worry about them because in all honesty they have nothing and if we don;t get a solid win it will be through our own failings not from any amazing play from Sevco.

Our players must keep the head and I think they will. An early goal would be nice but in all honesty 2 goals in quick succession at anytime in the first half will see them crumble.

This team are struggling to beat bang average part time teams on a weekly basis. There is nothing to fear and I can;t believe anyone is remotely worried about this mob but then people were terrified of Karagandy after they were lucky in their own midden and banged in 2 goals.

Hit shots from anywhere within 30 yards from goals the goalie is murder and holds nothing. Commons and Griffiths must start because they have the most lethal accurate shos in our squad. I fancy VVD to bag a goal and noticed he was 11/2 anytime and 6/1 to score in a Celtic win with Skybet.

If Celtic are smart don’t get dragged down to their level and keep the head we should easilly bang in 3 goals. The support will be right behind he Bhoys as always and I hpe everyone enjoys the day and a solid win and another cup final to look forward to.

The pitch may be a concern but it’s the same for both teams and having watched their players trying to control the ball on a bowling green type surface earlier in the season I don;t see it being a major problem for our Bhoys.

I think we will win. However if Sevco score first then it will be a mighty struggle for us.

They will break up play for the rest of the game and kick everything that moves in a hoops shirt. Come to think of it that’s what they will do anyway.

Maybe said Celtic fans “just can’t handle the truth”. For the life of me cannot fathom why anybody (and particularly those of a Celtic disposition) would take exception to an ad which seeks to attempt to redress some of the pish that’s been spouted about the dead team since Feb 2012.

Am also a 49r and was running every day (2 miles at lunchtime Mon-Fri and 10ks on Sat/Sun) until I broke my ankle in a freak accident when I was 56. Tried comebacks but it was never really the same after that. Healing is a slow process as we get older. Played tennis (doubles) for a few years and have been playing golf regularly for the last 6 years. However, given the crap weather we have been having here in Germany, no chance of any golf, so I am giving running/jogging another go. We’ll see how that pans out ;)) Was doing roughly 12.30 minutes for 2 miles. No chance of getting anywhere remotely close to that now; sadly…….. tempus fugit :((

  26. with one or two exceptions we have been unimpressive when faced with a team who park the bus

i dont think that sevco are any worse than the likes of ross county and certainly have a whole lot more to play for

i will celebrate wildly if we give sevco a damned good thrashing, but i hope we are not being a wee bit overconfident – that is never a good thing (heres hoping all the same though)

  28. in trems of big games, the match versus sevco would and should struggle to be in our top ten big games this season

Every european match is more important and a few SPL games too

this is a much bigger game for the sevconians than it is for us

they have it all to play for

we have it all to lose

A victory of any sorts is good enough
