Then there were two: Rod Petrie steps forward

1098

Hibernian chairman, Rob Petrie, yesterday told BBC Radio Scotland “Integrity is beyond purchase”.  It’s incredible to think that we live in times where this is actually news.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone would go about arguing with Rod on this matter.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston’s recent comment, “The [SPL] clubs are mindful of a sporting integrity aspect but the commercial benefits may outweigh that” offers the alternative view, but the logical conclusion of Petrie’s argument is stark.  If integrity of top clubs can be purchased, what about officials, referees and players with bookmaker friends?

We can assume Hibernian will join Celtic in voting against admitting a Newco directly into the SPL, should such a vote occur.  Five clubs in total are required to block such a proposal.  With Petrie declared against, would Romanov at Hearts vote for Newco?  His previous public pronouncements suggest he would relish the opportunity to take on one of the big Glasgow clubs.

Dundee United and Aberdeen are two other clubs under significant supporter pressure.  Both teams are also keen to change the 11-1 voting rule, which would be possible without a Newco.

Rangers, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone (through manager Steve Lomas) have all declared in favour of admitting a Newco, I expect Motherwell and St Mirren will do the same.  Ross County and Inverness may fancy adding Dundee into next season’s relegation fight instead of Newco but there has been no indication how either club would vote.

The 7th May vote was the best chance of getting Newco provisions voted through.  The more time clubs have to consider the decision the more susceptible they will be to supporter lobby.

I am of the view that SPL chief, Neil Doncaster, will not allow himself to become aware if Rangers have a prima facie case to answer as a result of the SPL inquiry into contractual arrangements until after a vote is taken.  Deadline for clubs to respond to the inquiry passed over five weeks ago. A simple check of submissions against SPL records is all that is required. Even if each clubs issued an all-clear, the inquiry should have reported.

Doncaster perhaps has no idea of the flood that will come his way soon and wash away all of these questions. His opportunity to act before events overtake him is limited.

Good to see you on the block again.

Rangers remain a shareholder of the SPL, and unless/until they appoint a Liquidator, they will have a vote.

Indeed, preposterous as it might seem, even were OldClub to sell ‘the business and assets’ to NewClub, OldClub would technically still be a member until a Liquidator was appointed or they voluntarily hand the share back.

Mad I know, but despite warnings from this and other sources since 2008 that RFC was sliding towards this inevitability, no one thought to check that the Governance framework could cope with it.

We don’t need attention moved away from them and their wrongdoing. If the public perceive this as am ‘Old Firm’ issue they will quickly lose interest.

In my view Celtic have made their position clear. That’s plenty for now. We don’t need to be at the center of this. If we do get embroiled unnecessarily it would only serve to legitimise a Newclub as an extension of rangers and further perpetuate the notion of the ‘old firm’.

That’s about as precise as I can be.

It looks like the tactics of the No Surrender brigade might be about to backfire….they’ve been openly critical of the SFA in their attempts to deflect blame as was to be expected. Everyone now seems to be re-positioning themselves into the foetal position. This would surely scupper any plans Minty might have to ride in and claim to be rescuing the day at the end of Operation Zombie :)

It is the end of the road for Glenn Loovens – new contract offer is not forthcoming. I am surprised that both he and Majstorovic allowed to go and also surprised that Mark Wilson and Cha both allowed to go.

Must have players lined up on the lists – lets hope we don’t have to go to far down said lists before we get our men.

    Ronnie Cully

    Senior Sports Writer.

CELTIC are reported to have made a move for Leicester City central defender Matt Mills.

    By RONNIE CULLY

The deal to bring Jaroslaw Fojut from Poland on a Bosman has been pulled after he suffered knee-ligament damage playing for Slask Wroclaw.

With Glenn Loovens saying his farewells to team-mates after his contract ran out, and Daniel Majstorovic not receiving the offer of a new deal either, the need for another strong centre-back is acute. Cha Du-ri is also leaving, along with Mark Wilson, after their contracts came to an end and the club decided not to activate the year option they held on both.

Back-up keeper Dominic Cervi is being allowed to go, while Darren O’Dea and Niall McGinn, too, come to the end of their time at Parkhead.

Lennon will attempt to move around half a dozen others out of the club to make way for new faces, and has just missed out on signing Latvian striker, Artjoms Rudnevs, who opted to move to Hamburg from Lech Poznan in a deal worth £3.5million.

Rosenborg’s teenage midfielder Markus Henriksen remains a player of interest. But with several clubs from Germany, France, Holland and France also in the hunt, he could be priced out of Celtic’s reach.

Lennon’s priority remains to bring in a powerful central defender and a striker who can add aerial threat to their attack.

Mills, captain of Leicester until he had a fall-out with new boss Nigel Pearson in February, could be the man to add strength at the back.

Reports in England claim Kelvin Wilson could be offered in a loan move.

At 25, one-time Manchester City defender Mills has similar experience to Loovens when he arrived at Celtic in 2008 from Cardiff City.

After collecting a Championship medal, the Dutchman is now looking for another club, and said: “I have been here for four years, and it is the end of my contract.”

Mills was signed by Sven-Goran Eriksson from Reading in a deal worth £5m a year ago, and the 6ft 3in defender was considered a key-stone of the Leicester side installed as favourites to win promotion back to the Premiership.

But, his relationship with the man who succeeded Eriksson, Pearson, has become strained and a quick exit from the club is anticipated.

    That is my point.

I agree with you, if I could keep a player out of the 2 lists above it would be Loovens, he is not nearly as bad as people make out. He has played well this season and is at a good age in relation to the other members of the squad.

A solution I thought about would be to replace the hun games with the first two euro games.

    problem solved, simples.

My opinion on why the games should be included, gave rise to my concerns that regardless of any statement, this action identifies the boards intentions towards their old firm partners.

Including the tickest in the package should have been a contingency plan, not the default status.

I prefer Glenn Loovens to Kelvin Wilson to be honest.

However, neither would be a first team starter for me – just back-up.

This is one position definitely Neil needs to address before our CL campaign kicks off.

    Agreed.

Always thought he was much better than dan or k wilson.

Sometimes folk are swayed by perception, i.e. Loovens has long blonde hair, therefore he’s girly, (even after smashing elbows up and down the park) whilst “big dan” has a baldy heid and looks the part, but in reality is a sheep in wolf’s clothing.
