Then there were two: Rod Petrie steps forward

1098

Hibernian chairman, Rob Petrie, yesterday told BBC Radio Scotland “Integrity is beyond purchase”.  It’s incredible to think that we live in times where this is actually news.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone would go about arguing with Rod on this matter.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston’s recent comment, “The [SPL] clubs are mindful of a sporting integrity aspect but the commercial benefits may outweigh that” offers the alternative view, but the logical conclusion of Petrie’s argument is stark.  If integrity of top clubs can be purchased, what about officials, referees and players with bookmaker friends?

We can assume Hibernian will join Celtic in voting against admitting a Newco directly into the SPL, should such a vote occur.  Five clubs in total are required to block such a proposal.  With Petrie declared against, would Romanov at Hearts vote for Newco?  His previous public pronouncements suggest he would relish the opportunity to take on one of the big Glasgow clubs.

Dundee United and Aberdeen are two other clubs under significant supporter pressure.  Both teams are also keen to change the 11-1 voting rule, which would be possible without a Newco.

Rangers, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone (through manager Steve Lomas) have all declared in favour of admitting a Newco, I expect Motherwell and St Mirren will do the same.  Ross County and Inverness may fancy adding Dundee into next season’s relegation fight instead of Newco but there has been no indication how either club would vote.

The 7th May vote was the best chance of getting Newco provisions voted through.  The more time clubs have to consider the decision the more susceptible they will be to supporter lobby.

I am of the view that SPL chief, Neil Doncaster, will not allow himself to become aware if Rangers have a prima facie case to answer as a result of the SPL inquiry into contractual arrangements until after a vote is taken.  Deadline for clubs to respond to the inquiry passed over five weeks ago. A simple check of submissions against SPL records is all that is required. Even if each clubs issued an all-clear, the inquiry should have reported.

Doncaster perhaps has no idea of the flood that will come his way soon and wash away all of these questions. His opportunity to act before events overtake him is limited.

  2. It’s a big game for Hibs on Saturday not having won the cup for a few years but it’s possibly a bigger match for Romanov’s Hearts . With the demise of Rangers Hearts could be the big winners if they can prove they are a match for Celtic. And the best way to do this is win trophys.

Remember the size of Rangers support is entirely down to the fact at the turn of the previous century they were the side that could best challenge the emerging Celtic. Celtic is the only reason rangers exist. If the banners at the semi final anything to go by they are more than equiped to take over from Rangers as Celtic No. 1 foe.

Also clubs like Dundee United will enjoy the fact that Champions League football is a possibility without Rangers.

Then ofcourse there is Aberdeen “we hate rangers more than you”. I don’t think their support would forgive anyone that let rangers off the hook on sporting integrity.

As the rangers fans like to sing “no one likes us” might just be right.

It’s not as cut and dried a some would have you believe.

  7. I agree with James Forrest and Gordon_J that a natural reading of the SPL Rules and Articles means an 8-4 vote is insufficient to change the current rules regarding the adoption of a new league member (other than via promotion), whether that new member be an existing SFL member or a brand-new club with no history whatsoever. Indeed, my interpretation is that as the Articles would have to be amended as part of the necessary changes, an 11-1 vote would be required under Article 2(c) on Qualified Resolutions.

Has anyone advanced in public an argument to support Doncaster’s contention that only an 8-4 vote is required? If so, I have missed it.

Even if one supposes that an Ordinary Resolution would be adequate, Paul67 is right in saying that 5 contrary votes will be required to block the proposed rule change, but more importantly, only 4 will be required to block the entry of a NewClub under those amended rules. That vote will necessarily take place in the absence of Rangers; and a 66% majority requires 8 positive votes out of 11, assuming no abstentions. Four clubs out of eleven with a backbone and some sense of integrity: it doesn’t seem a great deal to ask of our national sport’s flagship league, does it?

  15. I notice a few posters confidently ridding us of Loovens. By “confidently” , I mean posting in a fashion which assumes no disagreement. If so, then wrongly so for I certainly disagree. Loovens has played very well in all his appearances of late but received very limited praise on here. We have, mainly, a great support but too many find it hard too see beyond the reputation of a player instead of the reality. I hope Loovens stays.

Incidentally, one of those uber-negative supporters sits behind me in 106. He felt Hooper should have made more of an effort in the first minute as a very vague chance presented itself (too vague for me to have noticed it!). After Hoops knocked in his fifth, he still had not offered a single word of praise. Same with Sammi. He has berated him constantly but cannot bring himself to say Well done. Do these people think it makes them sound naive if they praise a Celtic player?

The delay in reporting the findings may be as a result of other clubs’ submissions. I mean, if Hearts are guilty if double contracts, you couldn’t have them kicked out the Cup and replaced by Celtic, could you?

I’m being facetious, but with a serious point. I don’t expect the findings will be released until the season is officially over…

I find it a bit ironic the SFA “punishing” Rangers because people at Rangers knew what was going on but did nothing.

What do the SFA know about the chances of a Newco failing to get a license? If they grant a license but Newco fail because SFA took a chance when granting one, would Newco supporters who bought SBs have a claim against the SFA or SPL?

With the news that Livi might seek compensation and Regan wants to know who the 20 backers are, the SFA look to be going into self protection mode which does not auger well for Rangers.

Even with Celtic quiet, the MSM is trying its best to keep as positive a mood as possible re Rangers. If we (Celtic FC) were to make any telling comment , they (MSM) would have a holiday from their pained efforts and simply concentrate on Celtic`s comment. Negatively, of course. That, I believe, is why relative silence is the best policy at the moment.

Good post m8, and I would agree that all of those boys on the ORC speculation list deserve to be on there but I would definitely add the Main Man Victor (20) and Thomas Rogne (21) as well. If we can keep all of those Bhoys then we are going to go into the CL qualifiers/groups with a superb base. I just wish we had secured Fraser by now and I still hope we do, even if we need to add a few more Shekels to his wage than we had originally planned, the big man has been immense this season and he looks to be a really dedicated player to getting better at what he does, we should do everything we can to keep him.

I would not be too disappointed if all of the top two lists left as they are not the essential players and these are places where we can up the quality of the first team.
