Thistle: every dog has its day

235

A lot of water has flowed since September, when Celtic eliminated Partick Thistle from the League Cup.  Celtic went on to win the Cup and claim their 10th successive trophy, topped their Europa League group, but slipped last time out, Thistle have dropped into the play-off position, second bottom of the Championship.

Despite this, tomorrow’s Scottish Cup opponents beat second placed Inverness home and away since they lost 5-0 at Celtic Park and recorded a win a Dens.  So they are a team who can get their act together on occasion.

Celtic should be in peak condition after the winter break.  Firhill is a ground most of the team will be familiar with, the only note of caution will be our performance against Dunfermline at Celtic Park in August.  Dunfermline are only three points ahead of Partick but took Celtic to extra time in this season’s League Cup, the only side in four seasons of domestic cup football to be level at the end of normal time.

Thistle, on the other hand, are likely to remember what happened when they faced Jock Stein’s Celtic in the 1971 League Cup Final.  Every dog has its day.

It will be good to see our former player, Kenny Miller in a Thistle shirt, the fourth Glasgow team he’s represented.

  1. *** CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2019-20 ***

    ** THE RELAUNCH **

Good evening, friends and there’s now just one more sleep till we get to, again, see The Champions play. And that will mean the resumption of the ole CQN Player Of The Year competition.

There’s no change to the format. Anyone (i.e. posters, lurkers, friends, family) can have their say after each game by deciding on their 3 best performers and putting those names in an email to cqnpoty@gmail.com . Voting opens at the final whistle and remains open until 10pm (Celtic Park Time) the following day.

I then tally up all of the votes and ascertain who were our top 5 performers. The best gets 5 points, next best gets 4 etc.

Tomorrow lunchtime I’ll put out a reminder of the current standings in terms of points. For now, here’s a list of who you, the viewers, have chosen as your man of the match for the first 27 games.

    Not sad , mate.

    Healthy .

    The penny`s dropped .

  3. Canman… 100pc correct but just the whole getting down n dirty with these clowns kills me.

The last time I remember we matched them statement for statement, the very next day they wheeled out Ogilvie Campbell who said…. ” it is a shame to see 2 of our OLDEST and most successful clubs squabbling like children”.

I must admit my heart sank and so must Lawwell’ s.

My point about Morelos is that he can now play against teams which might cost these teams a euto place or relegation or a cup-tie.

Him getting another red rather than a yellow doesn’t just affect us.

    A cowardly disgrace…

Lawwell said Maxwell and Mulraney were good guys…

    Why the fear?

    ————

I don’t think the comments about Maxwell et al necessarily meant anything in regards to football governance/compliance. Lawwell said Maxwell would be better for ‘the Clubs’. I think that meant things like scheduling matches, like the end of season international friendlies a few years back when Celtic fell out with the SFA. I think Celtic were supportive of the idea of a more commercially minded guy rather than the traditional bowling club approach.

  5. The genius that is co-commentator Alex Rae – “It’s about getting into the next round of the hat”! And with that I’m away to watch the telly….

  6. The attempts to salvage what is left of the reputation of Morelos by the Newco, the SMSM and the SFA has been something to behold. It has been shameless. All of a sudden he’s a dedicated charity worker. The alleged ‘booking’ for the gesture is laughable.

I think it’s pretty clear what it means and that is they really, really need to get good money for him and soon. Their financial positive must be absolutely dire.

A few months back we were told they needed £10m to see out the season. Who knows where that money has come from. I think they will just about manage to get through this season. They are running on fresh air and it’s all hands to the pump for the Scottish establishment to keep them going. Our custodians must be scratching their heads as this all unfolds.

  7. jinkyredstar ‘Frimpong Merrily on High’ on

The ‘corner that wasn’t’ is so easy for a Ref, if that way inclined, – ball hits few folk – who did it hit last?

No blame – that is two in two games for Sevco, I’m sure the total for the season will be a lot higher.

Add to that the soft free kicks 30 to 40 yards out and the wins/points start to mount up.

We have to get the afterburners on, because if they are anywhere near us they will not be allowed to lose.

  8. My long standing theory that the SMSM/SFA have blackmail material on Lawwell, is looking stronger by the week.

  9. A sweaty ballsack of Sevconians.

    A scrotum of Sevconians.

    A dangleberry of dobbers

    An arsewipe of simpletons.

A midgy- baws mix of mankies

    A sludge of simpletons

    God, there are so many.

  10. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Coneybhoy,

It’s the end of civilisation, we now live in a feudal cleptology masked as capitalism, democracy is no longer a serious form of governance. Just a tool to fool the masses.

  11. Av never been surer…an irrelevance of Huns…we hav the talent to see the season out

    H.H.

  12. A murder of huns

    A pile of huns

A shower of huns (except the manly mob know not of a shower)

    A harem of huns

We could do this all night.

  13. So Saracens about to be thrown out of their league for paying their players too much

    Breaching the payment limits

CHEATING is the term used by fellow rugby clubs, as Saracens have been hiding payments

    Will never catch on

    Deducting points for cheating

  14. Our policy of doing or saying nothing through the banter years is a fine policy until it’s time to flex our muscle, then let’s see if our custodians have the stomach to take the fight to them with our money, they won’t lose anything we will.

  15. Material or not it’s open season on the club players and fans , nothing is being done to counter it, the club Is promoting the woman’s team, giving it coverage on the main news page, but nothing about other big issues, nothing from this blog leader either, I’m not going to exercise my mind as to why as we have seen this is not a game in this country played under clear rules for all.

  16. I really like the look of the, hopefully, new bhoy Sorro.

He looks to be a belter. Lenny, I reckon, knows when he breaks into the team he is unlikely to be shifted.

Even if Soro has to wait until the Broonie ban for the game at the hate factory, Lenny will have no fear unleashing him there I think. :)

    An Tearmann,

Not long into the something different interview you posted. Cracking so far.

  17. BBC shortbreed

Rangers ‘ease’ past Stranraer. I look up this stroll in the park to see they scored on the half time whistle from a corner that shouldn’t have been. Never mind, these things even themselves out, Roy Aitken stole a shy over 30 years ago. Justice at last!! Oh, and they got a penalty in the second half, to be sure, to be sure.

  18. MAJESTIC HARTSON on 17TH JANUARY 2020 10:12 PM

    Parkheadcumsalford,

I didn’t watch it but there’s not much in life more enjoyable in life than watching them get beat.

The play off vs Motherwell is one of my favourite ever sporting moments…

    ————–

I’ll watch thems until they score, then it’s switch over.

If I get a message that they’ve lost a goal… Back on again.

For me the Hibees giving it sunshine on Leith after winning the cup final is up there for me.

  19. The Morelos thing is rubbish. The corner at Ibrox was wrong. The crowd at Ibrox out our faithful but utterly ‘entitled’ ‘support’ To shame. We would have got 25,000 moaners at best. For me the momentum of 50,000 behind their team Aligned despite the corporate opaque financial situation. We have 50,000 whinging ‘entitled’ malcontents who simply think we are entitled to win because we have a much more expensive squad. For me they is the challenge. Beating our own malcontents plus opponents plus the officials and media. Much to do for Neil and his squad.
