Thistle’s aim for top 6, the liquidator’s duty

490

It’s another big day in the title race as Aberdeen visit Firhill. Partick Thistle’s form has been up and down recently, losing to Hearts and Dundee United, beating St Johnstone home and away, winning and losing against Motherwell, all in their last six games. They have not won or lost by more than two goals win or defeat since November.

Aberdeen’s games since the turn of the year have also been tight, a 3-1 defeat at Inverness last month is the only occasion there has been more than a single goal in any of their games. It’s likely to be tight tonight.

A win would put Thistle into the top six, is it too much to ask…….

Natural justice would suggest that Rangers liquidators, BDO, should be allowed to appeal to the Supreme Court on the club’s creditors’ behalf (they were granted permission to appeal this morning). Rangers won the initial decision on a number of their players EBTs, and then the first appeal, so it’s clear there are finer points of law at play.

With Rangers now in liquidation, creditors may wonder why BDO are spending their (diminishing) pot of money on what is sure to be extravagant legal fees, especially as HMRC is the most influential creditor.  Liquidators have a responsibility to the creditors to dismiss any claims on creditors’ funds which cannot be substantiated.  If the liquidator wins at the Supreme Court, all creditors apart from HMRC will receive a higher payout.

I don’t imagine Supreme Court hearings and written judgements are arranged in a hurry, so put this one on the back burner for a while, but there remains a lot at play here.  I’ve tried to steer clear of the issue for a while now, as it’s little more than a distraction, but that’ll change should HMRC win in London.

Good luck to Thistle tonight.

  9. Personally, the lowering attendances also has to do with the saturation of football due to television. We have Champions League, Spanish, English & German football available at our fingertips.

We’re constantly being reminded that Scottish football is a poor standard and at a low level. Simply, if we played in England we would be selling out regardless of the board or results.

Neither Sunderland or Newcastle have been worth watching. The fans aren’t happy with the club hierarchy’s.

    Attendances are still good.

There are many of us who would watch Celtic play anybody. However, there are many who care about who we play.

The new independent review has been hurled at Celtic, time and again in the past four seasons, and Celtic players suffer the unique fate of yellow card first offence, week in week out.

*when the oul Dr. finally had us playing good fitba, especially after the 5-1 game, and we were scoring for fun I noticed injuries were appearing frequently as well as yellow cards, the latter are more sneakier than reds.

By the time the season was coming to an end we were struggling to put our first pick team out, Scott Marshall on loan FFS, and they won the double.

  19. Now that the BDO have won the right to appeal, now that they have released skewed financials they’ll think their back again as the establishment team and entitled tae carry on cheating.

It is now fairly evident that the desperation for Europe will be in full flow now and yet some on here want to abandon our beloved club, our club I said not the players, coaching staff, board etc but ours which was handed down tae us by the fine mhen and womhen that went before us. That stood up tae the stench of bigotry and hatred.

Since I was “allowed to go” to hun games which would be once I left school to when I emigrated the amount I missed could be counted on both hands and that includes being out of the country for 5 of them.

I even managed to sneak up to 2 when I was still at school, both were at the asbestos dome, one when big Frank somehow contrived to dive over the ball in the last minute to give them an undeserved draw and the other was Paddy Crerand’s last game in the hoops.

The night of the latter when I returned home my da on seeing my unhappy face accused me of being at “that game”, on answering in the affirmative I was expecting a skite for being disobedient, just before that occurred my uncle (my mother’s older brother) asked if I would be going the morra, against the Bully Wee at Parkheid, when I said I would love tae but had no money left (I was only a paper boy then) he stuck his hand in his pocket and gave me the gate money and fare up on the train.

This was the “winter 1963, it felt like the world would freeze” and when I woke up the next day the place was covered in a blanket of snow. 24 hours to late for this wee unhappy jungle jim.

I loved that game, I really did. Waking up in the morning scared that I might have slept in. Nae chance as my mother’s was of the opinion that if you were still in bed after 8:00 am then it was time to call in the doctor.

The rebs were put on, scarf, socks, St Patrick’s HS snake belt and jaiket with an array of badges on the lapels and then doon the Vale to meet my pals, kerry oot for the train and more rebs on the way up tae the venue.

The joy of winning was unsurpassed and the night was as ken dodd said “happiness, happiness the greatest gift that I possess, the next morning pouring over the Sundays after Mass where we had knelt and thanked the Lord.

Oh and how I missed it when I came over here, prior to acquiring a short wave meant phoning up the sports desk of the local newspapers or listening to ex-pat shows on the radio for results.

The Radio Erin show, which got their scores from the BBC, in particular didnae give their scores unless they lost. One Saturday morning on the way home the score of a game against them wisnae read out. FFS must have got beat I thought. Unknown to me there was a delayed broadcast to the game so when I decided to find the score from the “Calling all Britons” show imagine my delight to find out that we had won 2-0. Then there was queuing up on a Sunday night at a variety store for that days papers even though they were the Mail and Post.

If I was at hame now I widnae go to this game or any hun game anymore, not due to any sense of injustice or protest against the bent hun authorities, no to be honest because of age and health.

If I was about 20 year younger I definitely would be there, why because our team needs us in the face of hostility they will be subjected to.

I would be standing up in defiance singing ‘we won’t be mastered by no tangerine illegitimate person”, or other such ditties.

Back in the bad old days when the likes of swann and graham were putting us to the sword, when the latter allowed a drunken ref, who ordered 2 of our players off including mild mannered former BB Officer George Paterson in a game we finished with 7 men, tae cheat us, when our players were being punished while being attacked in the penalty box, when we were fielding boys guild players and juveniles while they had the shipyard loyal, when we were being labelled Bob Kelly and the Easybeats while listening tae chants of “easy easy easy”, our support was still there.

When they were on their dishonest run we always showed up even at their midden. We were never out sung and even when bader banned us some Tims managed to sneak in. FFS we chartered a small plane to fly overhead with a banner stating “Hail Hail the Celts are here”.

On this day of obvious hostilities our team needs us, probably more now than ever. So let’s stand in the band like a true Irishman as we’re off to fight the forces of the crown, for that’s their entitlement to who they are.

  25. Celtic miss competition. Celtic miss a rival. It is not possible to maintain a standard without tests at that standard, and European competition is so short lived and pressurised it cannot fulfil that role.

Naturally without that then the element of our support that want to be entertained will drift and has drifted (as opposed to us suckers who think we are actually part of the movement and integral to achieving the victory!).

The answer to this competition and rival deficit is where ultimately the failure has been. 4 years of accumulating titles, yet all the while the overall standard has diminished and I don’t ever remember a tangible move to address our football environment. Why weren’t we Europe’s biggest agitator for change?

We will have a rival next year, it will drive up competition and crowds. It may not improve the standard, but it is more likely to than were they not to come up.

The 4 year hiatus over, the business model returns, whether there is any utterance of new or old, title stripping or not, there will be a full house when they visit, the angry will stay away but they will be replaced.

The time to lobby change was 4 years ago, not now to stiffen a point about official public stance on their history or lack of it. That’s fast becoming a mere bragging rights footnote. We should be playing elsewhere against worthy opposition, not hanging around like the battered wife waiting for the husband to come back from the pub. Yet that’s what we’ve done.
