Time for Celtic to box clever

806

Salzburg got back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 4-1 away to third-placed Rheindorf Altach immediately before the international break.  The stats from that game are interesting.  Salzburg enjoyed 60% possession but Rheindorf forced 66% more chances by playing on the break, scoring twice in the closing 10 minutes as Salzburg pushed for an equaliser.

A point on Thursday would be an acceptable result for Salzburg so they could be caught between trying to defend and playing their normal game.  Either way it’s likely they will hold possession for long periods.

No team is completely dependent on one player but this truism is probably tested more by Salzburg and their talismanic striker, Jonathan Soriano, who has scored 26 times in 27 outings this season.  Consider for a moment if we had such a prodigious striker………..

Salzburg coach Adolf Hutter must decide how far tp change his usual game plan.  Salzburg’s entire strategy is to attack.  They have scored 50 league goals already this season, twice as many as any other team, while their goals against record is within a handful of the majority of teams in the league.

My preference would be to tempt them out, have them fall between the two stools of playing their natural offensive game and the more cautious approach they may be tempted to play away in Europe.  One note of caution, the Ajax team who beat Celtic comfortably in Amsterdam last season were shredded 0-3 by a counter-attacking Salzburg in the same venue a few months later.

Ajax failed to box clever, we can be smarter.  Stop Soriano, closed-down space at the back and play on the counter.

Spent many weekends in the Rock Garden around the same time. 82 – 6 before heading up to level 8 at strathclyde. Mind an 8ft bear downstairs, or was that the Stella?

Had my 21st in the Fixx around the same time as The Clash played a surprise gig there.

  2. Forgot to subject you all to my favourite goal for today this morning, so here it is now:

This goal is the goal against deidco from the 90’s that I remember most vividly (don’t know why). It is a beast of a equaliser by Paul Byrne at Ibrox in a game that finished 1-1, great play and assist from John Collins.

The video is of the full match but you can find the goal at around 1 hour 31 mins in:

Actually we never had a problem at all and we went through to Edinburgh every weekend then because Glasgow had to many head cases running about chibbing people because they dressed nice with the mod cloths on and all that, nothing like that in Edinburgh, to this day I have great friends still living there and we still keep in touch and have a bevy, I still like Edinburgh, but it’s like anywhere as long as you know where your going.

  4. tonydonnelly67..

Yes ——— that territorial team shit in Glasgow was a pain in the ass.. 60s Edinburgh suffered less of that shit but I was attacked twice in Edinburgh for no reason other than having a Glaswegian accent.

Of course some pupils were way too young looking, to even dare try The Clachan or The County even though some Fifth Year’s had moustaches. These fresh faced boys had to resort to The Lower Green and a Kerry Oot.

    That turn out well CS

The bar which is now ML3, used to be the Montrose (and before that may have been the Clachan) – don’t remember that building ever being a house, although my memory may be playing tricks on me.

Always preferred the Bay Horse (Bothwell Rd) or when I was much younger The County (Almada St) – The County was where I was first served a pint of beer aged 15 before a School disco at Holy Cross!!!

That was now a long time ago :-)

Last weekends Dinamo v Hadjuk Split game was suspended because Hadjuk Split refused to play the game in consequence of sections of their support being refused admission to the game.

If you had a drink in the county almada street you had every chance of coming out as high as a kyte as it wasn’t club king size being smoked in there….

  10. Tom McLaughlin,

was the Amsterdam trip the 82 match or 2001?

If the latter, that Dortmund trip must have been some trip as Amsterdam 2001 (when including the game) was a belter of a trip!

I was supposed to go to Dortmund in ’92, but unfortunately had to pull out late due to lack of funds (the eternal poor student lament).

Despite the result I still regret not pushing the boat out and going as all my mates who went said it was a great trip.

One of my favourite ever Celtic goals there. I’m sure you will remember he scored a similar (though not quite as good) goal against Oldco Rangers at Hampden in 1995.

I remember hearing that Jack Charlton looked at Paul Byrne before picking his squad for the 1994 World Cup. He apparently said immediately “tell him to lose a stone and a half and we’ll consider him”.

He never did of course. A shame as he could strike the ball beautifully.

The arguments in favour of The Rangers getting special tretament will get louder over the next months. If you want to keep abreast of the special pleading, self-admiration, phoney expressions of worry for “the game in Scotland” and all the other wearying second-rate propaganda that will crop up in newspapers, radio and TV over the coming months, check out the Rangers blogs for test flights.

The most (only?) literate, coherent bluenose commenter is Bill McMurdo: here’s a couple of extracts from his latest effusion:

I know that chairmen of other Premiership clubs are soiling their pants at the thought of Rangers not making it back to the top tier this season. Football in Scotland simply must have the Old Firm, something which Gordon Strachan paid lip service to recently.

That leg-up in the form of reconstruction or what Strachan called “manipulation” may yet have to happen – for the sake of Scottish football, if not sporting integrity.

This is a good example of the sense of entitlement that ruined Rangers and is crippling the new club. It’s crucial that we don’t succumb to this mind-set: the other teams in Scotland should be treated with respect – they have histories, ambitions and the support of decent men and women in their towns and further afield. We have no divine right to beat them.

  14. If we play the way we can I’ve no worries about RBS, I fancy us to win by a couple. Mon the hoops HH

I think it was his celebration in front of the Celtic end that stuck out in my memory.

Was that other goal in a 3-1 loss? Remember it vaguely.

I used to hang out at Bungys back in the 60’s when I was at sea school in Leith.

Heard the first Beatles record there and “walk right in , sit right down, daddy let your hair hang down” .Who was that?.

I think it was in a 3-0 Celtic victory during the Hampden year at Hampden. It was near the end of the season and Oldco had won the league by 20 or so points. Only pride was at stake but we skelped them. Rudi Vata scored a free kick and I think Simon Donnelly scored too.

  20. Looked at the stats for our previous meeting with Red Bull mob.

They hit a lot of shots. I would like to see big Efe in front of the back 4 but I have been asking for that all season. I assume that with the ACN coming up Ronny doesn;t see Efe as part of the plans and if he does well there with Nigeria he may well be on his way.

I suspect we will play much the same way as the first leg. Celtic will have the added bonus of James Forrest though. Hopefully we can put them on the back foot. Our major problem is who plays up front? Do we go with Scepovic? He hasn;t exactly had much game time. I would prefer Celtic to go with Griffiths who can play up top on his own. Our front line is the most worrying at the minute and if Lustig is still out will Matthews last 90 mins? He doesn;t often.

I think we may struggle to score goals without Guidetti. I would not play any of the loan boys in the forward areas. I don;t really rate any of them. I did like the look of big Berget when I saw him against United earlier in the season I felt he gave us pace, power and height wide but he seems to be out of the picture altogether. My team for Thursday.

  23. Judester @ 1315hrs,

I have to admit i cant really remember the stadium (hmmm wonder why??) but do remember standing in a small terracing behind one of the goals. Half of us were shattered the longer the game went on…had been a loooooooong 3 days…..and there was a guy not far from us battering on a drum trying to keep the singing going. Have to say, that the fact that he was a Celtic fan was probably the only thing that saved him from having the effin drum shoved where the sun dont shine!

we left straing after the game and caught the ferry at Ostend. That crossing was not fun as it was a bit choppy, and there was many a Celtic fan whose face was the colour of one half of the hoops! Didnt stop the few hardened Bhoys who sat quaffing slabs of Stella from the duty free….

By all accounts, if we beat RBS, the outcome of which is in the balance, a few folk will have to credit the manager. This is not a banker for Celtic.

The level of interest in the game can be seen in the most recent statements by the Czech, Fillip Twardzik, and some of our loan signings.
