Unproductive costs

775

Lewis Morgan has had a difficult shift this season.  The 23-year-old winger was used sparingly as a squad player before the concurrent absences of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Bayo saw him drafted into the striker role against Rennes on 28th November.

Lewis scored a good goal that day but he is not a striker.  He made another four appearances in that position before Edouard’s return, which brought the experiment to an end.  He made 17 appearances in League One for Sunderland during the second half of last season.  In the Wembley play-off final, he was brought on as an early substitute, while Aiden McGeady remained on the bench, but his time in the North East was not particularly productive.

Now he is Going to Miami for talks with Inter (not that one), with the MLS side having agreed a fee with Celtic for his permanent transfer.

There are several things about our experience with Lewis Morgan I like.  Celtic scouts considered him the top talent in the Championship, a player with the potential to make the step up.  It is good that we sign players like this.

He was loaned back to St Mirren, then after six months at Lennoxtown, out to Sunderland.  He was given a chance in the qualifiers, then put through the striker turmoil, which gave Neil Lennon a chance to assess the player.

The player has a League Cup winner’s medal and a Wembley experience, things that he will be talking about for the rest of his life, and is likely to sign a contract to keep him in Florida for a few years.  He would have hoped to hold down a first team place at Celtic, but on balance, the move from St Mirren has worked out well for him.

We have difficulty keeping players who are outstandingly successful, but they usually leave a for fee that allows us to further strengthen.  What happens with players who do not make the grade is also important.  Getting them off the wage bill, for a fee and hopefully a profit, stops the budget from being clogged by unproductive costs, a problem we have discussed on these pages since the days of Martin.

I have shown support for our Board over a number of contentious issues over the years.

likewise and even, even accept losing 9 and 10 in a fair and level playing field ( no laffin at the back) but this is not what i sign up for. You know what, it wouldn’t even surprise me if the board sold Eddy got some cash from Dembele transfer and bought ‘Hee Haw’ in this window, thinking, ‘those suckers will still renew’.

    They’re treading dangerous ground IMHO.

  4. Once again,(sigh),PLs salary comes up again. Those wishing to bring up all the ills they feel he has brought upon the club, must surely weigh them up against all the good he has done. Its not possible to blame him for the first, and ignore the second. We,as a club, have become more successful, richer, more attractive to sponsors.Lennoxtown built,Barrowfield next up,The Celtic Way.All under PLs leadership.Celtic FC,as a club has now become a thriving entity,in the backwater that is Scottish football. No easy task.Look across the city.

What really amazes me is that so many fans seem to fail to grasp the concept, that Football clubs are a business. Many still shun this idea among our support. He has bosses. They decide what he is worth to the business.Fans coming on here every day, ranting and raving about PL,to many of those it looks like obsession, should be careful what they wish for. Many have lived through the real bad times, including me.

This is most definitely, great times.Try and enjoy.

  5. MESSIAH ?

    For what it’s worth –

It disappointed me . Kept reminding me of Left Behind and Homeland .

    Each to their own !

  6. Celtic have a better group of players than any other scottish team and certainly spend more on football operations than any domestic team. We also spend more than most of the teams that have knocked us out of the c/l qualifiers. The game we lost to sevco was the result to poor tactics. The blame lies at Lennon’s door as far as I am concerned. New players would be good and may help us out but spare me the lack of investment stuff. PL is responsible for employing lennon and all the other managers since becoming CEO hence he has to take the blame also. But the season has a way to go so let’s wait and see what the outcome is of this season is. If we win the league there will be no change, if we lose the league lennon will be replaced. He will walk away with a full years wages in his pocket for failure. I hope the latter does not happen.

Some of the criticism of the Board is just silly.

We lose to Rangers. It`s P.L.`s fault.

By using the word ” brutality ” , however , it seems evident that the SFA have wildly overstepped the mark .

Christie is entitled in this circumstance to expect the Board to address what is , in effect , character vilification.

I would seriously doubt that the Board think of the supporters as ” suckers “.

  8. FOURSTONECOP,

I have never supported the Board over contentious issues. They will forever hang their heads in shame for their handling of Res 12.Take it to the grave with them.As I said, does not mean everything they do is bad.I look at everything, and everything is not bad.Much of it is very good. Most important to me is ,it’s good on the field,at present.Thats really all I care about.I don’t want to write about Boards,PL,I really have no interest in them as long as we are winning.

  9. 11 days into the transfer window and a couple of players out.

Linked with a lot of players but after long and protracted negotiations, still no signings.

    who could have predicted this?

  10. Big Jimmy

Although these are obviously difficult times for you, the standard of you posts has risen remarkably. Equally obviously, I hope everything goes well on Wednesday but that the `new man` continues with the recent perceptive and humorous standard of your posts :-))

All the very best, Big jimmy.

  11. SOT,

For the life of me,I can’t see a connection to Homeland.Left Behind, not watched.

    HH.

  12. Getting beat by Sevco is just a tiny bit of why fans are frustrated by our custodians.

We should be out of sight, we fail to prepare every single transfer window, whether that be that custodians just fail in their duty’s to our supporters by not planning (but surely if PL is a great business man) he has a plan to keep our team on top on the park – no. Or does our custodians do the simple thing and sell our assests and HOPE by chance we make it into the CL group stages. Either way they are pish at their jobs as I could assist strip and get cash in the bank. Doddle.

Also it’s the way in which they have let our support be railroaded by a corrupt organisation and be complicit in it to. Res 12, 5 way agreement, same club going for 55 shite, we are brutal, racist the list could go on, an absolute disgrace of a board of directors and they should have a vote of no confidence against them. A complete disgrace.

Sadly I do not just think on this occasion these are only my opinions.

  13. Oh and I know we are top of the league and 1 cup in the bag.

I am talking about the gap closing and it’s obvious to everyone and our custodians are simply sitting back raking in the dosh.

  14. “In my considered opinion the very second that dampt winda slammed open………………………the Board should have immediately faxed super agent Dodo Donut and sanctioned a mega bucks 35 mullyin deal for the in-form Carlos Fandango……………

I’m sure that the much sought after, in-form, headline grabbin’, eye-catchin’ swash-bucklin’ central foremost

” Carlos” would have drapped everything and tellt his super Agent Dodo to get him on the next Lear jet bound for Abbotsinch……..aw the while declarin’ his long time love-affair with The Lions, Scotland and the life-enhancing benefits o’ Black-Puddin’……..

    Aye…….

…………….Sod this having to wait till, the other mere mortals of the game – ManU, L’pool, RealM, Inter, PSG, Lyon, BM……..Sunderland, Sheffield……………Middlesborough, Newcastle Swansea………………………………. have picked over the January offerings,……….. that Board shoulda breenged in and splashed the cash………….”

  15. We won he scottish cup as our mercurial left back was in A&E with a broken jaw. We have had high tackles, grabbed tackles and studs in thighs of late. Who can forget the rat Naismith on Johnny Hayes.

Yet, one of our players is accused of ‘brutality’. I agree with 90% of what Macjay posts on here, though I feel he can be a little reticent to adequately hold the board to account.

When such as he has had enough, we know this is a watershed moment.

It pains me to see our house divided. Time for some real leadership from our leaders.

I have been loath to condemn the Board on a number of issues because I am quite sure that much of what the Board does is done ” behind the scenes ” without publicity and the general public have no knowledge of it .

The difference here is that the SFA issued a public statement re. ” brutality “.

That demands a public response .

  17. Big Jimmy

You will be added to the folk I pray for, I hope you’re back to better health soon, YNWA.

  18. Can anyone tell me when any teams have bought value in the January window.

At Celtic whenever we have knee jerked and spent on popular solutions we have never won anything :

    Roy Keane

    Robbie Keane

    Craig Bellamy

    That Arsenal Swedish winger guy

    And a few more.

It’s not the easiest to navigate that is for sure.

Splashing cash is super easy but getting a meaningful and worthwhile acquisition is less so.

  19. Macjay

100% on the issue of SFA brutality statement.

That is too far given context and what actually occurred.

Disgrace that it has gone unchallenged. It is also very poor that no pressure was applied re Morelos gesture when leaving pitch. Our CEO has been sleeping on his watch re that.

  20. So early this week Neil was calling for an apology from the SFA for the ban on RC. The SFA response is 2 fingers. I’m sure we’ll have a game changing response from the club.

    Uncle Jimmy

We could easily put together a video compilation of genuinely ‘brutal’ assaults on our players which went unpunished . It would show the SFA to be a bunch of bigoted liars , who are not interested in justice , but we already know all that. Removing them , as Bankiebhoy says , should be our only focus.

Can you imagine what it would be like if VAR was brought in? Like minded people to the ones who decided on Ryan Christie’s case! Maybe even the very same people ! Forget about VAR , forget about any kind of pseudo democratic ‘conference’ like the one that followed our complaint about Beaton….It’s all pointless while the same shower occupy the offices of Hampden. Can you imagine the Spanish football authorities waging a dirty war against Barcelona? Or Italian F A against Juventus? Or English FA against Liverpool?

We somehow need to show the SFA up for the corrupt body they are . Make them the laughing stock.

I’m also a pools Agent along with being a Season Card holder & shares

holder as well & yes I voted of Resolution 12 @ the last AGM however &

no doubt @ the next AGM probaly next November the Board will probably

say No to our request using their majority holdings anyway a fellow I

know in the pools office has been wrongly informed that if Lyon sells

Dembelle to Chelsea for example for 34 Million pounds then we don’t

get a penny of the sell on fee 3.4 Mil aye no right now they are telling

are on the fiddle cheating look @ the Banners (Nixon Approach)

cheating talking about cheating now the SFA are coming out with via

BBC Sport teletext the reason they gave Ryan Christie a ban was because

of his agressive approach towards the wee diving dirty cheat Morelos

what a load of crap so its alright for Morelos to stamp on Christopher

Putting aside the issue with Christie , it is hard to avoid the view that in this game alone , a blatant double standard was at play .

I`m not sure that the ref. on the day could be accused of bias . The penalty decision would appear to negate that possibility , although his toleration of the extraordinary time wasting tactic of a ” drinks break ” with five minutes to go beggared belief.

It smacked of a loss of control .

  24. Funny story, an events planning company posted on various social media platforms last week looking to guage what sort of interest there would be for a meet and greet night with Chris Sutton, John Hartson… and Charlie Nicholas

However, due to a furious (and hilarious) backlash from fans in the comments section because of the inclusion of Nicholas, the company has since dropped Cham-pain Charlie and released dates with only Sutton and Hartson attending

    Still laughin’

    B-)

  25. Tonsils I’m not a fan of VAR the same old cheating would still go on.

The match last night Sly Shefield Utd v West Ham a player accidently

heads the ball a Shefield Utd player around 40 yards from their Goal

& it brushes a West Ham players hand unintentionally & roll the play

on a few seconds later West Ham player Snodgrass sticks the ball in

the Shefield Utd net & VAT says its “No Goal” due to Accidental Play

aye right VAR is a waist of space & a waist of money its a “Another

Job For The Boys & Girls Device” A Rubbish Addition that’s not worth

    the hassle crap no VAR

  26. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Bankiebhoy stole ma thunder, but this nonsense about us “dithering” over transfers is just that, nonsense. I just looked up “Sky Sports Transfer Centre” completed deals page. There are eight headlines. That’s it, eight transfers completed in the entire U.K., and one of them is Magic Johnston signing up for five years.

Once a target is identified there are a number of issues to be resolved.

    * Do the players current club want to sell?

    * Does the player want to move?

    * Does the players wife want to move?

    * If the player has a family, is it feasible to uproot them?

    * If the player is willing to move, does he want to play in Scotland?

    * If the player is willing to move, does he want to play for Celtic?

    * Can we strike a deal with the selling club?

    * Can we strike a deal with the players agent? Or Agents?

    * There may be difficulties with the players existing contract, add on fees etc.

Once all of this is agreed in principal, both clubs will need to consult legal representatives. The player will need to consult his legal representatives. Then contracts need written and signed. Temporary accommodation must be secured for the player and his family.

It is not like a Football Manager computer game. Then consider all of the above, and that the player or club, may have multiple offers to consider. Also the players agent, or the selling club know that they will likely miss out on top dollar if they agree a deal early in the window.

Yet there are comments in here about just give them what they are asking, and stop haggling. With a policy like that we would be bust in a few years. Get real!

I think it could be said that the January window is important to Celtic . I don’t think we put it to good use though.

Better to start a CL qualifying campaign with a team that has gelled together for 6 months rather than panic buy in the summer window then throw some newby to the wolves

I truly hope that your next procedure is just what you need to put you right – good luck and my very best regards to you.

May I use you to illustrate a very important point about social media in general and posting on here in particular.

Big Jimmy has had so much to deal with, but he has been able to share some of it on here – I am sure it has been of help to him to have so many offering him good wishes.

People post on social media for many differing reasons. I am sure there are some Tims who find it a Godsend to be able to talk about Celtic with some of their own ‘kind’ on Paul’s blog.

We never know who might be behind a moniker, a lonely person, a suffering person, a troubled person, and therefore name-calling and ridiculing posters by some on here is reprehensible. Slapping someone down and then treating it as a joke makes me sick. The name-calling is straight from the primary school playground – the snide remarks altogether more sinister.

We all know who these ‘jack the lads’ are – we should be calling them out – I will continue to do so.

Of course there are different views and different types of Celtic supporters – so by all means argue/debate point for point, but please leave out the vitriol.

  30. Big Jimmy,

My brother in law had a couple of stents inserted at the Golden Jubilee a couple of months ago through his radial artery (which is the usual route) and is indeed like a “new man” since then.

Apart from a sore wrist for a few days he was brand new and got out same day. He had help at home mind you.

Good luck big fella, I’m sure it will go well!
