When boyhood fans move: Liam Shaw

273

With several in the squad reluctant to extend their stay at the club beyond 2022 it was encouraging to read 19-year-old Sheffield Wednesday player, Liam Shaw’s, drive and sense of purpose at joining Celtic from 1 July.

Liam’s teenage years followed that of Kristofer Ajer, central mid-cum-central defender, I expect him to fill the latter role at Celtic.  Wednesday are considering legal options regarding this transfer, which falls into Moussa Dembele’s Fulham-to-Celtic category, which saw the player cross the border for training development compensation.  A deal within England would have cost an actual transfer fee.

Sheffield Wednesday fans are less than impressed with their club for failing to convince a fan of the club to stay.  It is a tough one, but this is modern football.  Players move, irrespective of who they support.  If they have the drive to succeed at the top of the game, childhood dreams are not going to stop them.  We have known this to our cost.

You will never hear this from a player but speak to an agent.  If the player has talent, he is moving to the best career option available.  Enjoy your final months in Yorkshire, Liam.  Lennoxtown will be  a changed place when you arrive.

    I hear ye bud…………

I don’t think that’s luck, it’s cheating – they are allowed a degree of cheating no one else is.

What’s more the rest of our opponents are conditioned to not complain about the cheating if ultimately it’s Celtica that suffers.

Sevco have influence at eufa. They have Dallas and Ogilvie.

I also think there is another ex sevco individual working there. I can’t remember who.

We have no influence at eufa

    Good point. I stand corrected.

  4. Guys

we have a full staff, we have a CEO, a manager (caretaker) 1st team coaches Stevie Woods, Gavin Strachan. Nick Hammond, head of Football Operations, Gary Penrice, Head of Recruitment. We have scouting teams including Willie McStay and Tosh McKinlay.

Every player is at risk when a new coaching team is starting. Liam Shaw is no better or worse than any other player. When our New manager arrives he may or maybe in charge of Football Operations but he may be a first team coach and be in charge of selection, Tactics formations etc. Brendan and Neil Lennon had the final say in player signing but maybe not the new manager going forward. It appears there will be a Transfer committee including Scouting, recruitment and coaching membership.

  5. In the group stages of the EL this year, thems have had three red cards given to their opponents – only one other club had 3 awarded to opponents – AC Milan.

    Roma -2 , Villareal 1, Granada 1, Slavia 1.

There’s another interesting stat with thems and AC Milan.

13 yellow cards were awarded against AC Milan ; 22 yellow cards were awarded against their opponents. This is understandable. They are better, the opponents receive more yellows which lead to reds.

The cheats – 21 yellow cards were awarded against wangers international and only 19 yellows were awarded to their opponents. It’s difficult to frame the 3 red cards awarded to their opponents (in 6 matches) given the fact they actually get more yellows than their opponents.

Why is it that that club throw up odd statisitcs? A couple of years ago I showed that if they were drawing or losing at half-time, the injury time awarded in those games was different to the injury time awarded in games they were winning at half time! They received a staggeringly different rate of yellows this season compared to previous seasons!

    PHILBHOY,

How many times did we hear, falsely, how much of a doing they gave us in a couple of games last season.LCF,we were down to 10 men as usual.Did’nt matter. The last game at Ibrox,we gave them a lesson, until we went ,as usual, down to 10 men, only Mc Gregor keeping them in it.Not a shot on goal 1st half.An OG beat us,but at the end they were hanging on.No fears facing up to them at Celtic Park.

I thought there were 2 lessons to be learnt from last season’s League Cup final.

    1. We’ll get totally found out if we try to ride our luck like that next season.

    2. Great keepers make such a difference.

I was born a tim in Donegal.

I worked in England from my late teens till my late thirties..

Seen my compatriots travel in two directions.. One assimilated and took on the prejudices of their peers whilst another remembered the signs in the windows and every Paddy joke.

I’m of the latter and I salute the Black Panthers and I am humbled that they understand what happened in the east end of Glasgow.

    Up the rebels and F.T.B.

  8. The two times I felt the most worried recently as a Tim………….

when Neil was confirmed as permanent manager and when it was revealed The Wall would not be staying as ‘keeper.

We need an accomplished, no-nonsense, talented spine and backbone.

  9. Shakhtar down 3-0. Kiev lose 0-2 at home. If both go out, ( looking increasingly likely ), and the Zombies win at the Bigotdome next week, or even draw 0-0, is it not the case that next season’s SPL winners go directly into the Group Stages, as Scotland will have overtaken Ukraine’s co-efficient for the last slot?

  10. I realise it seems like sour grapes or responding like a bad loser when we are somewhat negative re Sevco`s `success` this year but what if the points being made are justified?

Covid hasn`t affected them; retrospective Red cards are a fact; the penalty stats are a fact; Covid depleted opposition in Europe is a fact; Governmental praise whilst Celtic were strongly criticised is a fact.

I cannot help but feel that there was an unstated policy that we would not be allowed to win the title this season as it would have meant financial disaster for Sevco.

Of course our performances have been a big factor but is the massive points swing really feasible ?

,I cannot rid myself of that strong feeling I mentioned above that we were never going to be allowed to win the title this year.

    `night all.

All the more surprising, and laudable, given that the Irish in America were not always to the fore in supporting the panthers.

They were undoubtedly helped off the field and on it. ‘‘Twas ever thus. And was always going to more so in this historic season.

We’ll never know – imho – if these advantages would have made the difference, because we were so far off the pace they didn’t need any help.

To be really, really honest…at 70 odd years of age I no longer take fitba as seriously as before. I abhor the corruption in the game, exemplified by FIFA, UEFA, SFA and the scum over at Bigotery Stadium…however, I have loved Celtic for so long I find it difficult, nay, impossible, to turn my back and walk away from it. Estranged maybe, divorced never. My main concern these days are my children and my grandkids and the world in which they are living. Unfortunately, today’s selfish politicians are slowly draining my onetime optimism and leaving me with a glass which is now almost half empty. I have lost all trust in these charlatans who have shown time and time again they care about no one but themselves. I could go on and on but I won’t because it’s just a rant, and a selfish rant at that. It won’t make the slightest difference to anyone but myself. It does make me feel better though, well, sometimes…

No-one is saying that. What a simplistic reduction of an intelligent point of view. The treatment of the Irish, most recently seen in the views of Gordon McQueen (whom I liked as a footballer), or the disgusting treatment of James McLean, Aiden McGeady, James McCarthy, and Neil Lennon etc all show that the Irish suffer because of their desire to simply desire to be Irish. Why is the love of your country demonised? I am not intelligent enough to give a full answer, but I love the sense of my Irishness, whilst respecting those who see themselves as British. What we fail to establish is a political system that allows for genuine respect across all people – probably impossible.

BTW this is very deep so don’t dismiss it in such a simplistic manner.

Sadly, the beer has kicked in. I will leave you by saying 2 things:

    1. The UK is built on exploitation – the famine was an act of genocide (tell the lie often enough and people will blame the potato blight – a bit like the 55 titles crap).

    2. I would love to see an independent Scotland because living in the North of Ireland is to be subjected to one of history’s biggest lies.

  28. Deffo last comment – Arsenal to put the Rankers out in the next round with KT scoring the decisive goal. Hopefully, they don’t get that far.

‘The UK is built on exploitation’

    True. It was.

And Scotland was very much part of that. A very willing part (Scotland united with England to allow Scotland to get in on the colonial/imperialist bandwagon, after its own attempts to do so in central America ended in ignominious, catastrophic failure).

But Scotland leaving the UK isn’t going to change any of the history.

So I’m not sure what your point is.
