You did this

470

This year some of your money went to Whizz-Kidz, who help some of the estimated 70,000 children in the UK waiting for the right wheelchair.  They not only provide equipment and life skills, but also offer support to young people.  Take a look at this video to find out the kind of way your cash has changed a life:

We’ve just sent off money to Action on Depression, a Scottish charity working with some of the 10% of the population who suffer from this illness at some point in their lives.  Like all of the recipients of your money this year, there is a feeling that we provided no more than a drop in the ocean of what is required, but with depression we felt that bringing the subject out into the open was as important as the money donated.

This illness can do enormous damage lurking in the shadows, let’s kick it into the light.

Many of you will remember the Martin Chamber Ecuador Trust.  Fr Martin left Scotland some years ago to help some of the most deprived people on earth.  In his words, this is why we helped:

“I would say that people should care about the poor people of Ecuador firstly because they are our brothers and sisters.  On top of that their needs are great: they have no running water, no proper sanitation, no sewerage system and poor electricity.  They have little access to education or to medical care and they are crammed together in bamboo huts – mile upon mile of houses, millions of people living below the poverty line.  That’s why people should care.”

You gave to the Ronnie Coyle Benefit Trust, sadly, Ronnie is no longer with us, you donated to the Aberdour PTA, from the Fife village that hosts our summer get-together, and you gave a donation to The Haven, who help people with life limiting illness from Glasgow and Lanarkshire.  Their story is available in a short video here, take a look at what your money is doing.

All in I’d say you did very well.  Very well indeed.  Have a great Christmas, you deserve it.

Brown reveals Jelavic remarks about Rangers’ 12-point cushion ‘fired us up’

AS CELTIC captain, Scott Brown’s job is to motivate his team. Back in mid-November, when Celtic were in need of galvanising, Brown was grateful that Nikica Jelavic did his work for him. With Rangers then holding a 12-point advantage over Celtic to lead the Premier League, Jelavic remarked “that should be enough to keep us there”.

It is six weeks since the Croatian forward said that, but the healthy lead is now a sickly single point and at Parkhead on Wednesday, Celtic know a win over Rangers will see them overtake their title rivals. Brown isn’t about to repeat Jelavic’s mistake and start predicting they will. His own interview, in the wake of the Christmas Eve 2-1 win over Kilmarnock, was circumspect. He could not resist, however, reminding Jelavic of his gaffe.

“It fired us up what he [Jelavic] said, of course it did,” said Brown. “Everyone has their opinion, but we always had a strong opinion that we could catch them. Pressure is part of the game, but we’ve managed to deal with it.”

Rangers’ setback at St Mirren, combined with Celtic’s win over Kilmarnock, means Neil Lennon’s side now occupy the box seat where Jelavic was once rather too comfortable. Brown is refusing to make any bold assertions about the midweek Old Firm derby and denied the Celtic players realised Rangers had lost despite the cheers around the stadium last Saturday.

“We didn’t know the Rangers score, we just knew we needed the three points,” said Brown. “Rangers is still a big game, still a have-to-win game for us, so we’re looking forward to it. We’re not thinking about going top of the league. We know stranger things have happened. Their defeat at St Mirren might build Rangers up now to have a great game against us, but we’re on a good run now and want to keep it going. Confidence has been the key.

“It just shows how good our team spirit is that we’ve gone on a run of eight SPL wins. It shows we’re playing really well, but we’ll have to take every game as it comes. We’ll have to take it one step at a time. We’ll wait until Wednesday’s game and see what happens. We’ve caught up and that’s the main thing. A lot of it has been for the manager, but it’s for ourselves and for the fans as well.”

Brown’s return to fitness from an ankle problem has aided Celtic, with the next potential help being Emilio Izaguirre’s recovery from a broken leg.

With a new deal signed and the questions about Brown’s future gone, there is perhaps a greater appreciation of the player from the Celtic support.

Games like the one on Wednesday are why he stayed. Performances like last Saturday’s are why the Parkhead faithful are pleased he did.

“There’s always going to be a hard patch during a season,“ added Brown. “It shows our spirit that we’ve picked it up and gone again. The Old Firm game brings the best out of everyone. It’s one of the biggest games in the world so it’s a joy to play in. We can’t get too hyped by the crowd, we should focus on playing our own game.”

Rangers pay heavy price for indiscipline

    St Mirren 2

    Rangers 1

PAUL McGOWAN was not considered good enough to hold down a place in Neil Lennon’s first team, but he delivered a performance and goal in Paisley on Saturday which may prove as significant as any to the Celtic manager’s hopes of wresting the SPL title away from Rangers.

The defending champions ended a remarkable and absorbing contest at St Mirren Park with just nine players on the field, having imploded spectacularly in suffering only their second league defeat of the campaign.

McGowan was the maestro for the home side as they savoured their first- ever home win over one of the Old Firm clubs since moving into their new stadium three years ago, But Rangers helped orchestrate their own downfall with some lamentable indiscipline.

Lee McCulloch’s dismissal after just 24 minutes, for swinging an elbow at Graham Carey as the pair tussled in the penalty area while awaiting a free-kick delivery from Gregg Wylde, was inexcusable from such an experienced player. While the severity of McCulloch’s action was the subject of some debate, it was unquestionably foolish on the former Scotland midfielder’s part.

His side were leading 1-0 at the time, courtesy of Lee Wallace’s 11th-minute strike, when he floored Carey with his right elbow. There may have been an element of retribution about it, Carey having earlier been booked for a reckless challenge on McCulloch which incensed the Rangers players.

McCulloch’s departure completely changed the complexion of the game. Rangers were unable to come to terms with their short-handed status for the remainder of a first-half dominated by Danny Lennon’s enterprising side.

Five minutes after McCulloch was shown a straight red card by referee Steven McLean, Rangers manager Ally McCoist replaced Wylde with the more defensively-minded Maurice Edu as he looked to stabilise his side.

But St Mirren had established a tempo and momentum which the Ibrox men were unable to resist. They left the field at half-time 2-1 behind and in a state of shock. Even before Saints equalised, the warning signs were there for Rangers when goalkeeper Allan McGregor made a superb instinctive save to keep out Steven Thompson’s close-range flick from a Kenny McLean corner.

The leveller finally came in the 44th minute, some patient and fluent build-up play around the under-siege Rangers penalty area culminating in Aaron Mooy eluding Steven Whittaker’s challenge on the left of the box to smash a fierce left-foot shot high beyond McGregor’s right hand into the roof of the net.

St Mirren did not want the half-time whistle to come and in the closing seconds of stoppage time, they made the most of their purple patch by taking the lead. Nikica Jelavic, who had one of his least productive 90 minutes in a Rangers jersey, lost possession to spark a swift raid which saw David Van Zanten split the visiting defence with a fine pass into the path of McGowan.

The 24-year-old, who left Celtic in the summer, outmanoeuvred Dorin Goian before clipping a smart finish low past McGregor.

The introduction of Sone Aluko for Kyle Lafferty at the start of the second half brought some much-needed pace and invention to Rangers as they re-established a firm foothold in the game against a Saints side who suddenly looked uncertain as to the best approach to seeing out an historic victory. Jelavic should have brought Rangers back on level terms in the 55th minute when he was sent clear by Steven Davis, but the Croatian international was woefully lacking in conviction as he scuffed his close range shot wide of Craig Samson’s left-hand post.

The outcome remained in the balance until three minutes from time when Rangers saw red again. Goian, booked in the 72nd minute for a cynical foul on Gary Teale, repeated the offence when he pulled McLean back as the midfielder tried to break into the penalty area.

Rangers’ frustration then threatened to completely get the better of them, Davis booked for a lunging foul on Teale which was followed by an ugly stand-up altercation between Jelavic and Mark McAusland which saw both men cautioned.

McGowan should have added further gloss to a memorable day for St Mirren when he rounded McGregor in stoppage time, but he was unable to supply the finishing touch as his shot was cleared off the line by Sasa Papac.

But nothing could take the shine off a victory which will live long in the memories of all those associated with the Paisley club, while time will tell just how much damage McGowan has done to Rangers’ bid for a fourth consecutive title.

  14. Anybody know the timetable for Rangers to appeal Elbows’ red card?

He’s rubbish but he is a danger to the health of our Bhoys so I’d rather he was not playing.

  15. The appeal (according to Snyde) would be heard on Thursday therefore allowing said man with big elbows to play on Wednesday, personally i would welcome that.

It is worth noting that if he loses said appeal, the ban could be more than the automatic two gane ban
