Booking £20m from TV rights in China over 10 years is a remarkable deal for the SPFL, it shows a lot of faith from broadcaster, PPLive, who have the responsibility to foster the league in the world’s most populous country.  The cash will be beer money to Celtic but represents a substantial income for most of the Premiership.

The deal opens the door for Celtic to follow-through, the only club with the wherewithal to exploit the merchandising, scouting and recruitment opportunities there.  We’ve seen strategies developed in Mexico, India and now China, while the European football-tourist market is also now being targeted through online partners.

None of this will put the ball in the Ajax net tomorrow night but it is important nonetheless.

Delighted we’re at Tynecastle in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.  Hearts players found the will to live against Hibs last week but they have little more than effort to their game.  Should be a cracking tie, which will not be subject to the performance vagaries of a home tie with Morton.

  1. 2-1 Ajax.

Paul McMullan unfortunately caught in possession, but an attempted shot that was going miles wide fell to another Ajax player and he volleyed it in.

  2. The Ajax goalie is behaving as though he had just won Miss World or something. He was exceptionally poor on crosses and the young Celts tried hard to capitalise on it. He was very lucky on a few occasions that his flaps and attempted flaps fell to his team-mates.

Still, he saved the two penalties very well, so fair play.

He looks a bit like Alan Stubbs.

  4. many years ago, I was at a dinner in Glasgow with the 3 Bobbies – Charlton, Shearer and Lennox.

Bobby Charlton hosted it and said a few nice words about Bobby Shearer – then he spent the next 95% of the time talking about Bobby Lennox and the Celtic team of that era. He was effusive in his admiration for Lennox and noted that he was just as effective as George Best.

He talked about how Manchester United realised that Celtic did not play friendlies in those days and MU had to role up the sleeves but still did not get a result. These were true “Challenge Matches” between two clubs with honour on the line. He said he really enjoyed them and loved to play against Celtic anywhere.

Celtic fans lapped it up – other guests looked on in grudging admiration.

  5. Had to go to a meeting in Glasgow City centre.

Ran into a squad of Tims en route to Amsterdam at Queen street.

Extremely jealous of the trip that lies ahead for them.

Only 2 tickets from a squad of around 15 I was speaking to.

    Stay safe ghuys.

  8. The recent debate with regard to the possibility of a resurrection for our deceased neighbours, & how we would deal with it, has shown that there is an ambivalence amongst us.

I am in the blessed position that the debate does not touch me in any way.

I addressed this anomoly 20 years ago & decided that I would never again share the same space as our greatest rivals.

I have not ever been tempted to change my decision.

If there are Celtic men who want to watch what has for ever been a hate-fest, then that is for them to justify.

I gave away my season book seat every time this fixture took place.

I did not want to be part of it.

I am delighted that it no longer exists.

If it ever again happens,.. I will not be anywhere near it.

In saying this I am not apportioning blame.

I long ago came to understand that this fixture reduced most of my fellow Celtic fans to the level of our opponents.

I hope it NEVER happens again.

  9. Skyislandfill, if you are lurking, I am in Elgin again, short notice I know, I was supposed to get to Inverness tonight.

But heading out for a curry soon, and if you fancy a beer later, leave a message on here.

I remember last time I was up you said to give you a shout next time, so shout!

  10. On the best day of my life in ’67 when Jock showed how Scots could take on anyone in the world with confidence and belief, I promised myself, at age 14, that I would make the pilgrimage to Lisbon. It has taken me a while as I chose to work in community work rather than for personal profit but I have booked the flights and hotel.

Any advice on access to the Estadio Nacional and the city generally would be really appreciated. We’re there for a week and it will be the best week of my life.

Their reply” yir having a fekn laugh,we have 4 for a bus of 54″

Another response today re the Offensive Behaviour at Football: Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012

    Dear Mr ACGR,

Thank you for your recent email regarding the Offensive Behaviour at Football: Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

I share your concerns about the operation and implementation of this Act and I, along with my Scottish Labour colleagues, have already called for an early review of the act. Unfortunately this call was blocked by the SNP members of the Justice Committee and, without their support, we were unable to take forward an early review.

I have passed your concerns on to my colleagues on the Justice Committee and they will again raise the issue with the convenor of the Committee and attempt to instigate an early review of the Act.

I believe it has so far proven difficult for some fans to come together and speak with one voice on this matter. It is only through fans putting their team allegiances aside that an effective case can be made for action. I support an early review and hope that fans can join together with me to put real pressure on the SNP Government to act.

Thank you for contacting me and please be assured that I share your concerns about the impact that this Act is having on the relationship between police and football fans and will continue to push for an early review.

    Kind regards

Yesterday we had the BBC saying Butcher agrees terms with Hibs, a denial by ICT and Terry Butcher himself.

Today we have BBC saying Butcher set for Hibs.

Somebody is telling lies, in Scottish Foo………oh wait.

Some genuinely bad news over Govan way. Rumours of the fixed cranes being dismantled at the BAE yard turn out to be a prelude to the closure of either Govan or Scotstoun in the next couple of years. One thousand jobs will certainly be lost, and with Ian Davidson their local MP you can be sure Govan is doomed. Time to find alternative customers to the MOD.
