A flash of brilliance from Abada

231

When they went a goal behind, St Mirren provided evidence they can play a bit.  They never actually made a chance worthy of the name, but they passed with speed and accuracy and forced Celtic’s more advanced players to work back and cover.

New manager, Steve Robinson, bemoaned their luck, “a ricochet” and a ball that “bounced off a face”.  Liel Abada may disagree.  The breakthrough came after he was pinned to the touchline by three opponents.  His control was so precise he broke free and forced a foul that led to the opener.  Tight games are so often won by a flash of brilliance from a gifted talent, we have a few in our ranks who can fill that role.

As Jota prepared to take the kick, I said, “It’s pointless sending in a high ball, we have no height.”  I promise to repeat this often until the end of the season.  What height we have is limited to two central defenders, the absolute entry-level attribute for any team.  Good deliveries, though, are hard to defend.

You will have noticed our passing seemed introverted at times.  Overhit or inaccurate passes have been a feature of recent games, sapping confidence which inhibits future outcomes.  A series of games on poor pitches, including a wintered-looking Celtic Park, has not helped.  The Plastic Pasta Pitch on Sunday will be no better, and it’s pointless sending in a high ball, we have no height.

“Not like you to find another negative.

Livi will need to win at least 2 to be in top 6. One of those is again at us.

Dundee Utd have easier games. St Mirren has a game in hand. Hibs also easier games.”

Hmmmm. Was that first line a sarcastic Jibe? Sounds like it, but happy to be corrected. ( You misspelled my moniker, btw. )

I expressed concern ( given our previous record ) that Livi are now fourth. Their position is a fact, neither negative or positive. You believe Dundee Utd, Hibs and St. Mirren will push them to bottom 6. Fair enough. I hope you are right.

I also hope you are fully recovered from Covid. For the future, I commend this recent study to your attention.

Since the J-League resumed on July 4 2020 following the shutdown due to Covid, midfield dynamo Hatate has played for TWENTY consecutive months and an energy-sapping total of 103 games.

The 24-year-old was a key man for Kawasaki Frontale and also helped Japan reach the quarter finals of the Tokyo Olympics during the close season before another domestic campaign led into signing for Celtic midway through the Scottish season.

  4. Maeda’s packed schedule wasn’t quite as bad – but still gruelling. His run started a month after Hatate’s when he returned to Japan from a loan spell with Maritimo in Portugal.

From August 2020 his only break came in January 2021 as he was Yokohama F. Marinos main man during an initial loan spell before signing permanently and also featured at the his country’s home Olympics.

The 24-year-old played a total of 89 games in almost the same period and explains why he and his compatriot could be feeling jaded.

Maybe if the ex pats had these bigots marching past there homes year on year telling us and our children to f off home, or were physically attacked for wearing green, they would feel differently.

Sevco had the chance in 2012 to disassociate themselves completely from their fans nazi views , and not only chose not to, but actively encouraged it and increased the bile and hatred towards us.

For the only major club in Scotland that allows us to celebrate our ancestry, to give tacit approval to the bigots of the orange order, is a step too far for many of us.

I’m prone to leaving a few minutes early and exiting by the pitch side exits at the north stand lower. Even at such a late stage of the game, the pace of the game is frightening at times. Its something I’ve really come to notice over the past while.

  10. Some years ago Johnny Doyle’s daughter appealed to Celtic supporters to help her find footage of her father. Johnny died tragically when she was a young child and she couldn’t remember his voice. She had seen some clips of him but none where he was speaking. I was sent this video of an RTE clip about Celtic in the 1980s when Big Billy was our manager and Johnny features in it a couple of times and in one clip he is speaking briefly. I don’t know if anyone remembers her or knows how to contact her but she might want to see the clip if she hasn’t seen it already. Can anyone help?

  11. Superbru Round 29 Update

Jmccormick won this week’s round of predictions with 11.5 points, ahead of Quadrophenian and Ayrshiretim. The wooden spoon was awarded to Chalmersbhoy, randomly from all the one pointers.

Overall, Call me Gerry has extended his lead to 11 points over Hopeful Hoops with Bhoy from the Village a further 6 points away in 3rd.

Next predictions are due in by 3pm on Saturday when we have a chance to back Aberdeen at Ibrox.

Is it not the case that the Superbru League leaders have invariably been backing the Rangers to win, which they often do, and have also had some success in accurately predicting their results? Those of us who refuse on principle, and on moral grounds, to pick them to win, are at a distinct disadvantage, as a result of being faithful through and through. The most faithful, like wee BGFC, at the bottom of the heap.

Not in my book though, as far as I’m concerned they should be saluted, and hailed as bona fide heroes.

  16. BURNLEY78 @ 10:25

No, I was not offended. Did you read the article? The reason I sent it is that my brother in law had Covid, was quite seriously ill for 2 weeks, recovered and appeared to be back to his hardy self as an Ironman triathlete. Now, almost 2 years later, he is experiencing strange cardiac symptoms where his pulse rate, normally a sitting 52, will suddenly increase to treble that for no apparent reason.

Cardiologists at Johns Hopkins have found not a thing wrong with his heart or arteries and are left head scratching as to the reason ( and of course it never happens when he is in the doctors office!)

He appears to be in perfect health.

So far, it’s a medical mystery. I think there are many things still to be discovered about this pernicious disease.

Not in my book though, as far as I’m concerned they should be saluted, and hailed as bona fide heroes.

    ——————————————————-

All the participants are heroes in my eyes- they all contributed money to the worthwhile cause for which we are raising funds. Indeed, some just donated and never took part. The competition element is the least important part of it.

When I provide regular updates – I am encouraging people to keep participating. The guys leading every week or winning a round can bask in their fleeting glory and the guys at the bottom of the table can take a bit of ribbing and encouragement to take part. No mater where you are in the table, you can always win the prize for the best weekly total of points and that might occur in a week when Sevco lose. Either way, I will review how best to handle this situation next season as we might want to find a more regular, less one-off way of raising funds.

There are some posters who never bet on the Ibrox team to win and fair play to them, that is their choice. I think calling it a moral decision is a bit overblown though. The match result is not affected by a Superbru prediction and most are not making money out of this or thinking of making money- it would not surprise you to be told what happens with some winnings or ill gotten prizes but I am sworn to silence on the matter. Wee BGFC has supported our effort but I have no idea if he is always predicting a Sevco defeat or not; some people are nearer the bottom because they participate less regularly than others.

I can separate out the act of betting on Sevco in a bookies from predicting a win in a comp which might, only if I am good at other predictions, earn me some prize money, which may in turn get donated to a good cause.

I am not going to criticise any of the participants for their choices in this matter. However, if anyone thinks that my highlighting the foot of the table is causing offence, I am happy not to mention it in future updates. What do others think?

And I appreciate your feedback and take no offence at what you have stated.

    Fur fox ache!!

Just becos I tip THEM to win some random games in Superbru hardly marks me out as an endorser of hunnery nor an immoral character. I’m just guessing scores for a bit of low consequence digital fun (don’t Google that !!)

The conceit in thinking NOT picking them to win some charity tipping comp rounds, somehow makes anyone a better Celt than another just totally baffles me.

Mibby I’m reading too much CS Lewis or Anthony De Mello this weather. Lots of stuff about hate creating hate.

PS; it nipped when I got a wooden spoon few weeks back, but it galvanised me to think better about my picks.

  21. I posted some time ago that football should have been far more involved in the #metoo movement than it was.

This was an issue in which football had a responsibility unlike kneeling and poppies, which I considered to be more societal.

Events in the past 12 months have only strengthened my beliefs.

I do, however, find the political intervention involving a Clyde / Raith Rovers / Clyde player to be utterly bonkers. Governmental overreach and hypocritical beyond belief. A few have made heartfelt and timely points, others are simply bandwagon jumpers.
