A flash of pearly whites and the Prodigal is back

290

He was our North, our South, our East and West.  Then he was someone else’s in the Midlands, but he’s back, he’s ours, and he’s here for…., well, at least three-in-a-row!  With a flash of those pearly whites, the Prodigal Manager, Brendan Rodgers, has taken over as manager of Celtic.  He joins legends Billy McNeill and Neil Lennon as men who have been permanent Celtic managers on two separate occasions.

It is easy to forget how far the club came in less than three years when Brendan was first in charge.  Tarps were taken from the Lisbon Lions stand, replaced by a season ticket waiting list.  Champions League football returned after a hiatus, and the entire professionalism of the football operation leapt forward.

The Celtic he returns to in 2023 is vastly improved that when he found it in 2016, or even when he left in 2019.  Already in the Champions League, Brendan will find a united dressing room, backroom and supporter base.  We should all try hard to keep things this way, self-indulgent schisms do nothing for Celtic.

Work starts now.  We must win the league and improve performances and results in the Champions League, and to do the latter, we need additions to the squad.  Brendan will also hope he can again improve the performance of players he inherits at the club.

After all that went before, it takes balls come straight back to Celtic after his stint in Leicester.  At 50, he is at the start of what should be his most productive decade in management.  His ambition was never in doubt, so strap in and enjoy the ride.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan.

    No complaints from me.

I wasn’t happy when he left, but not going to cut off my nose to spite my face.

He’s an excellent manager and the best man for the job.

  3. Fantastic managerial appointment. Realistically couldn’t have hoped for better. The three year deal is confirmation that a two year managerial cycle is here to stay. Do well, move on, whilst Celtic get decent compensation in the process.

Wow, I didn’t see that coming!

Welcome again Brendan, onwards and upwards and let’s get to work! (myself included)

Fine, he’s celtic manager, but I don’t want to hear any smoke blowing from him

    So…what would we do….?

It’s not even Christmas. Brendan has been offered the job at a big name, under performing London club. They’ve got money and a big, shiny new stadium. Their manager has just been fired.

    Do we:

    1. Refuse to let him go?

    2. Hold the door open for him?

    3. Give the job back to Ange…?

  7. Belfastbhoy0 on

Well at least people can now drop the saying… The English never remember and the Irish never forget

  8. Hun blogs full of nervous twitchy slagging of all things BR.

This is one guy they didn’t want back in town.

They’ll surely have worked out that he’s rerurning tooled up heavier than when they were a pub outfit used for shooting practice.

The permanent embarrassment that is the GB are in your camp.

They’re entitled to their view and being as how they’re ‘Ultras’, their stance is not surprising.

There’s little doubt though that clear majority of our support welcomes Brendan back.

I suspect no one bar some in the media will pay attention to the GB so hopefully they don’t embarrass us.

My relationship with him will be sterile professional, I don’t want to hear any I’m one of you from him, I was mildly miffed with ange, given what we done for him I figured another year or 2 then by all means go get a big retirement package somewhere, given all the We talk, but I get it, ii don’t really care if there were any issues with board etc, if u are one of us you don’t risk 10 in the row and demi god status for ruddy Leicester, at his age, so we’ve sold it for an impact manager who has never organised a decent defence in his career

  11. ‘it’s alright, Brendan’s comim’ back,

and ah don’t care where he’s been yeah’

My take is that Brendan is sending out a strong messge to the squad that he will continue a similar style of play to Ange’s.

“Ange has done some brilliant work across the last two years and I will be doing all I can to maintain Celtic’s momentum as we face into all our domestic and European challenges.

“We have a hugely impressive and talented group of players and staff at the club, and I am really looking forward to meeting up with them all and then getting straight down to work.”

With endorsement of this from Calum McGregor and John Kennedy, hopefully the players who may have thought about moving on will give it a try under Brendan and give us stability for Europe this year.

If John Kennedy has foresaken the opportunity to go to Spurs, with the higher wages on offer, we should appriciate his loyalty alongside that of people like Jimmy McGrory, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay and Tommy Burns.

Of course, by this time next week we could be down to a squad of 7 full time professionals!

  17. the long wait is over on

    My tuppence worth-

Brendan being appointed as manager seems to me the best option – by some distance – of the options available or, at least, available according to the press.

Of course there’s a bit of a question mark over the whole thing given the nature of his departure but his ability cannot be questioned IMHO.

    We move on.

He’s now the manager and should be backed 100% unless or until , like any other manager, things don’t work out.

I, for one , think they will.

  18. The GB who I love and hate, need to start showing some savvy here.Only weeks ago, they got permission to canvas for ” The Celtic End”.Sowing dissent, dividing the support, won’t go down well with the powers that be.Rightly so.I have no time for fans who put themselves above the welfare of the club.

Brendan was the best man to carry on from Ange, end off.Holding grudges will help no one.

The future is exciting, let’s all settle in for the ride.

  19. Anybody else get an e-mail from the club to purchase a standing section ST?

I’m not even on a waiting list too !!!

I will support him (no capital S thou) but I’ll never Love and Trust him, he’s just another passing through merc, I’ll be surprised if he’s there in 4 years

  21. We can now spend the next few weeks debating transfers. Wonder if Ange will become the pantomime villain?

  22. ‘mornin Aipple. Not sure we could afford any of the Leicester squad except a promising youngster or two or someone at the end of their career. Other EPL clubs will be hovering over them like vultures right now.

  23. BELFASTBHOY0

No successful Celtic manager will be here four years. If any of our managers get snapped up by the PL, it’d suggest we’ve been successful.

  24. Aipple

Barnes and Maddison mentioned on page 1 here. For me, the only decent players they have but will be snapped up by EPL for higher fees and wages than our budget
