A flash of pearly whites and the Prodigal is back

290

He was our North, our South, our East and West.  Then he was someone else’s in the Midlands, but he’s back, he’s ours, and he’s here for…., well, at least three-in-a-row!  With a flash of those pearly whites, the Prodigal Manager, Brendan Rodgers, has taken over as manager of Celtic.  He joins legends Billy McNeill and Neil Lennon as men who have been permanent Celtic managers on two separate occasions.

It is easy to forget how far the club came in less than three years when Brendan was first in charge.  Tarps were taken from the Lisbon Lions stand, replaced by a season ticket waiting list.  Champions League football returned after a hiatus, and the entire professionalism of the football operation leapt forward.

The Celtic he returns to in 2023 is vastly improved that when he found it in 2016, or even when he left in 2019.  Already in the Champions League, Brendan will find a united dressing room, backroom and supporter base.  We should all try hard to keep things this way, self-indulgent schisms do nothing for Celtic.

Work starts now.  We must win the league and improve performances and results in the Champions League, and to do the latter, we need additions to the squad.  Brendan will also hope he can again improve the performance of players he inherits at the club.

After all that went before, it takes balls come straight back to Celtic after his stint in Leicester.  At 50, he is at the start of what should be his most productive decade in management.  His ambition was never in doubt, so strap in and enjoy the ride.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan.

    1. The leaked home kit, if legit, is horrific. Again, if legit, who at Adidas, and more importantly, Celtic, would permit the interference with the integrity of the hoops with the irregular wavy design (not to mention the pattern within the green)????

    2. The GB do not speak for all Celtic fans. Far from it. I would be interested to know about the democratic structure of the GB- do they all (or a majority) agree with the churlish tweet today??

I think one of his most impressive bits of management was when he trained the players to play 10 v 11 before playing sevco.

Celtic came out with retro 90s gear last season so this abomination of a home top is probably true.

Nostalgia is huge among young folks so probably will do well

I do like a black top. My ‘Hooper’ era black one is still in my football bag; dusty

  4. I am delighted with the appointment of Brendan and not so with that leaked first team kit looks fake to me.

Like the first time he came here, he took us to another level, welcome Back Brendan, we’re privileged to have you come back to us, you done what anyone would have done if the EPL comes calling . This time its something to prove, business and not pleasure and will be more professional. Take us up another notch. Exciting times ahead.

  6. 42000 at the Ire/Gib game tonight. Over a million went to league games last season. Game is on the up here, no matter the results

When I lived in Ireland I did my bit supporting the game, has a season book at St Pat’s for years, the footy wisny the may west, but it was exciting at times, far removed from the hey days, but hopefully it will come back again, folks just need to switch off their TV’s and stop watching the EPL and actually go to the games

  8. Does the arrival of Brendan Roger’s signal the end of “Pedrophobia” ( the fear that one man has the power to shape reality rather than be shaped by it.)

As ever “we’ll see” but it will be a step in the right direction if it does.

I posted this a (long) while back. It came with a health warning for the hard of thinking who would be unable to handle the venue and the posh voices. It’s also an hour long.

As I said at the time, it’s very insightful.

    It’s now even more so.

    Welcome home Brendan …….. https://youtu.be/dyZU3Gn8LEo

I hope so, but as ever not holding my breath, I do have the feeling that DD has put his foot down tho and told them BOTH to put their childish ego pish behind them and grow the eff up.

  11. AULDHEID @ 9:47 PM,

Well that’s very interesting, as I’m sure you are aware CQN gets it’s info and spin from big Pedro and his agents.

It was interesting then that recently there were several leads regarding Ange’s replacement and Celtic’s protocols going forward.

One infamously pointing out that Brendan had no chance of returning to Celtic and was only being interviewed out of courtesy.

The others indicating that Celtic will be a satellite of the City Group as the informal relationship between that organisation and our football club will be the blueprint for Celtic’s future.

Of course we were looking to recruit Peps’ deputy as our manager and use Mark Lawwell’s understanding of TCG functions to recruit and develop players.

We know the Lawwells are partnership, associate led business folk, so when big Pedro jetted out to Istanbul during the UCL final, we expected him to be finalising the deal and setting up a framework for Celtic for the next few seasons.

Interestingly enough, unbeknown to the other camp, DD had put plans in place for the Executive to go out to Spain and see if they could secure the services of BR.

It went well and we understand it was arranged for BR to meet DD in London to thrash out a deal and a detailed plan to take Celtic forward.

Brendan has taken up the challenge of replacing Ange but keeping the current set up, structure and personnel in place.

Very different from the Chairman’s approach and plan.

It certainly seems to me that the roles and responsibilities at Celtic have reverted back to what you would expect of a professional football club for the first time in about fifteen years* and that our ambition and focus is putting the success of the teams and infrastructure development first.

For those that have been arguing this should happen from the end of the MO’N era, it is truly a great vision for our great club.

*Of course some roles changed when Ange was first appointed with excellent outcomes

    Hail Hail

  12. May I say that had BR not gone to Leicester for an inflated salary and subsequent substantial pay off he would not be willing to accept a much lower salary at Celtic than he would routinely expect to receive to receive in England. I would cut him some slack in the circumstances. I have no info about anything but consider if Ange is worth £9m a year BR may perhaps could expect a salary in that area. IMHO BR has made a consider salary sacrifice. I wish him nothing but good fortune and happy landings.

What happened to JoBo Balde – don’t see him around

    Who is this we?

How did we get to know bolded statement one and what evidence did we have for it?

How did we get to unbeknow bolded statement 2?

Surely, if all this deviousness and subterfuge was true and now Brendan is in, both “business-minded” Lawwells must walk.

It don’t make any sense otherwise.

In other news just 7 tories stuck their necks out for Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, son of Monsieur Stanley Johnson in tonight’s vote.

Two hundred didn’t bother turning up of course … including the courageous, honourable PM … who, from the pictures outside no.10 … instead deployed his staff to find some short guy for him to shake hands with.

  15. If the sleepy silent boring 51k seated sheep got up off of their knees and stood shoulder to shoulder with their GB comrades then the pro Old Firm PLC `frauds` the real frauds, then the PLC might realise that their lazy lounge lizard gigs might be coming to an end…maybe?
