A flash of pearly whites and the Prodigal is back

290

He was our North, our South, our East and West.  Then he was someone else’s in the Midlands, but he’s back, he’s ours, and he’s here for…., well, at least three-in-a-row!  With a flash of those pearly whites, the Prodigal Manager, Brendan Rodgers, has taken over as manager of Celtic.  He joins legends Billy McNeill and Neil Lennon as men who have been permanent Celtic managers on two separate occasions.

It is easy to forget how far the club came in less than three years when Brendan was first in charge.  Tarps were taken from the Lisbon Lions stand, replaced by a season ticket waiting list.  Champions League football returned after a hiatus, and the entire professionalism of the football operation leapt forward.

The Celtic he returns to in 2023 is vastly improved that when he found it in 2016, or even when he left in 2019.  Already in the Champions League, Brendan will find a united dressing room, backroom and supporter base.  We should all try hard to keep things this way, self-indulgent schisms do nothing for Celtic.

Work starts now.  We must win the league and improve performances and results in the Champions League, and to do the latter, we need additions to the squad.  Brendan will also hope he can again improve the performance of players he inherits at the club.

After all that went before, it takes balls come straight back to Celtic after his stint in Leicester.  At 50, he is at the start of what should be his most productive decade in management.  His ambition was never in doubt, so strap in and enjoy the ride.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan.

“After all that went before, it takes balls come straight back to Celtic

    Welcome to Celtic, Brendan”

    That’ll do for me.

    (Assuming “balls” doesn’t mean “nerve”)

Condition of his choppers is largely irrelevant.

I say “largely” because Sevco can’t possibly win the “Our manager has nicer teeth than yours” cup.

Honestly Michael. Did you visit the dentist?

So it’s not just the lack of trophies that makes the huns so miserable.

  3. Chat from some fans that Brendan owes us an apology in his first press conference is embarrassing nonsense. He must certainly does not. He owes us his best efforts while he’s employed here. That’s it. Best of luck, Brendan.

Perhaps the motto of the EPL should be

    “There’s gratitude for you !”.

    Best wishes to Gary O’Neill.

No idea why a certain episode of Fawlty Towers came into my head today.

“Bunch of Krauts, that’s what they are, all of ’em. Bad eggs!”

“Yes well, forgive and forget, Major… God knows how, the bastards.”

“and a CV that says he can improve and excel every aspect of a football Club is very rare for Celtic FC.

To do so on the back of a successful manager leaving is unheard of.”

Indeed. You could say that strengthening from a position of strength has never been our strength!

  7. Que Sera Sera, so Brendan Rodgers steps into the ring once again in shock comeback to regain the the SPFL titles he surrendered when he disappeared into the winter night and took the last train out of town heading for the bright lights of Leicester.

June has certainly been a warm month of shocks with losing Ange unexpectedly to EPL glamour boys Tottenham Hotspurs and Celtic enticing Brendan, still probably one of the outstanding managers around, in a comeback to Paradise. People in the EPL do look down their noses at Scottish football but these appointments tell another story.

Celtic have gone for a safe pair of hands with Brendan’s appointment and although we were shocked with his sudden disappearence a few years ago that’s how modern day professional operates. Welcome back Brendan and continue the next phase which Ange promised- success in Europe.

Is Stuart Armstrong available, we have never replaced him his running or goals ? Maybe his wages will be still out of our reach though.

Was just thinking the exact same thing. You never know. If not we need somebody with the same attributes.

  9. We were blessed with Postecoglou and anybody would find it difficult to succeed him.

Having said that I’ll be cheering on the teams against Spurs from now on, apart from Arsenal.

A recent manager who has had success at the football club has come back.

    Alo Brendan!

I’ve seen references to “new Hoops”.

    I can’t find on the Celtic site….

can only find the horrible black strip…

    launched last week.

Can anyone point me in the right direction.

    Cheers

  11. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL @ 6:12 PM,

Yes, it really does have the appearance of a corner turned.

Not only a top manager in place to build on Ange’s legacy but keeping the backroom staff and assistant manager in place to ensure continuity right back to Brendan’s own first tenure.

With DD driving this and the 2024/25 UCL format around the corner it is the first time since Martin O’Neil was manager, that we seem to be trying not only to reach the standard of our European peers but to actually punch above our weight.

    And we’re big in Japan…

    Hail Hail

  12. That is boakin but the home top earlier looks like the Peoples one from early 90s- even worse

The black top is the only sane option

  13. Decent turn out for Ireland tonight; special cap award for McLean.

Hope they panel Gibraltar for Kenny’s sake. Need a lift

We are gonnae be spending Big as well, no way Brendan would be back unless given certain assurances.

It’s, IMHO, gonnae be awesome the next few years, Ange left us in Marvellous shape too.

We need a couple of players of quality, for a start and I reckon Brendan will think the same we need a middy enforcer, badly, to me that’s the number one priority, for europe anyways, one thing about Brendan, he can and does change formations to suit, I recall one game at the bigotdome when he played three different formations, we then were down to ten men and still won, more of the same for this bear.

  16. this is bizarre, what did he call him ?

    From F.A. Ireland Official Twitter.

The FAI regrets to announce that today’s U21 international against Kuwait has been abandoned after a racist remark was made by a Kuwaiti player towards one of our substitutes.

The FAI does not tolerate any racism towards any of our players or staff and will be reporting this serious matter to FIFA and UEFA.

great point about Rodger’s tactical malleability.

That 3-2 at Snake Mountain was epic. Me and my pals had been on a rugby weekend in Dublin. Only 3 left for flights home during the game.

I found out later that my mate had viewed the pub as ‘full of angry Coneys who ended up crying’
