A money blog: CL, FX, Brendan effect, commercial deals

644

The spectacular rise in income, which saw Celtic bank £61.2m in the six months to 31 December 2016, compared to £52.0m in the TWELVE months to 31 June 2016, was influenced by four categories:

Champions League participation
Improved commercial sponsorship deals
The Brendan Rodgers effect
Foreign exchange rates

Clinging onto a lead that August night in Israel guaranteed this would be a record turnover season for Celtic, instead of what may have been a loss. As well as the Uefa dividend itself, we sell more tickets for other games in seasons we participate in the Champions League. We also sell more merchandise, premium packages and hot dogs at league games.

I was very surprised when news of the Dafabet and Magners deals filtered through last spring. Sentiment at the club at that time was on its bum, but these contracts brought a significant increase in income (in the case of Dafabet) and great income for a new property (in the case of Magners). Worthy mention also to Intelligent Car Leasing, for the boost they have given to the Foundation.

The ready-reckoner revealed that the value of these contracts roughly equated to one season’s Champions League money. It was a huge result, which laid a critical foundation for the steps the club took to secure a manager in May.

We were guaranteed more money, which gave us more confidence, which fuelled the move to secure a top manager. The small snippets of history are often missed, but no less fascinating.

Brendan Rodgers arrived like a superstar and has delivered on that promise. From the moment touched down in Scotland he sold season tickets, the club united behind a talented manager who is here determined to achieve great things.

No club in the world is more dependent on foreign exchange rates than Celtic (euro/GBP graph above). The economically illiterate (don’t start me) who voted for Brexit have caused an untold net harm to the world, but as sterling depreciated against the euro, the value of Celtic’s euro income from Uefa in GBPs went through the roof.

We are a football club playing in Scotland who earn euros and sterling in almost equal measure. Bad UK economic news may harm our sterling income but will boost our euro income. No other club operates a scenario like this.

Well done to all concerned, from Brendan and the players, to the tens of thousands who bought tickets and mechanise, and the commercial team and board.

Jackson will say what Traynor and Paul Murray tell him to say, I think. So if he is questioning the “Rain-jurzz-ness” of Warbs, then that looks like curtains for the bread man.

McInnes is the best they can hope for. Hopefully the Dons stand firm on compensation.

Jackson and Spiers bumming up McInnes for Sevco. Would he go there?

These 2 water carriers will be on message, from the defacto Sevco Director of Football- Jabba

    The whole charade stinks.

There is a theory that small countries tend towards corruption (see “Boomerang” by financial journalist Michael Lewis, of “Moneyball” fame)

This whole palavar played out in front of the SFA, SPL, dozens of clubs, the players’ union, the BBC, TV, and half a dozen Glasgow sports desks.

No-one said anything. Tells us a lot about Scotland.

Should BDO be successful would that money not go to the creditors, all 270 of them, the major one being HMRC? I cant see anyway it helps keep the lights on at Newco.

  6. Arnold not only is a chartered accountant, he is also a historian and knows every thing about The Rangers International FC since birth in 2012.

So please guys, please give this guy some due credit.

He knows they have won 55 league titles although inexplicably he can’t expand.

He knows they have won HUNners of trophies although inexplicably he can’t expand.

He knows they won the Betfred cup.

He knows They Are The People in perpetuallity even though it is inexplicable and he can’t expand.

    He knows he has relatives.

  7. King is probably contented with the situation. They wil probably be second or third in the league and European football, they still get 49,000 paying customers at home, so no need to spend any of the supposed £30 million he has available to spend when he thinks necessary.

On the contrary, I hope Aberdeen do not stand in the way of wee Derek. If they hold out for compensation, they’ll never get it and Sevco will go after somebody better. I don’t know who but the list of people who are better must be damned long. It’s St. Johnstone who have to stand firm if put in that position.

It won’t be Newco that pays… nothing to do with them… they only bought the history not the debts..

  10. BDO are going after Duff and Phelps for the way they conducted the administration of RFC 1872-2012 and sale of assets to Green. Sevco will see none of it will go the the creditors pot of the liquidated entity.

It’s one of the reasons I left scotland.

Wean came home from school one day covered in spit, she was a Fenian, TET decided to confront the parents of a few weans, TET gets arrested and jailed for a day or so, took a couple of favours to get me out and the charges dropped, all I did was tell the parents to control their weans, no threats, but they saw me at their doors as a threat, all cos I am a Tim.

The sued Collier Bristow for mega millions, it’s keeping them in work for a year or so, that pot is obviously running dry, do you honestly think it takes X years to wind up a company, no chance, they are scamming millions a year from the pot, the creditors will end up with virtually feck all, it’s how it works.

I have often felt it unfair that some people go on Mastermind with a subject like “the history of the world from 10,000 BC to 2017 while Arnold the accountant could limit the time span of his specialist subject to one with just over 4 years. There aren’t enough questions to fill the whole 2 minutes.

Arnold was the name of Tony Blackburn’s barking dog on Radio 1. No reason for writing that really.

  13. Just back from T2 Trainspotting. A very good update on the excellent original. The orange hall scene is hysterical, but probably, sadly true. Watched in a cinema in Yorkshire, I think I was the only one who got it, tears streaming down my face, puzzled looks on others.

  14. See the next Messi, AKA Billy Gilmour, was given a straight red against Hibs today in the Development League for a dangerous/violent foul. There then ensued a stramash amongst the players and the ref losing control.

Can you imagine the love that will be on display if the Hibs team are back up next season with NL in charge? Poor Neil is going to have to put up with all that crap once again from the permanently ragin’.

As you may know, my moniker comes from where I did my year abroad. It turns out, with nothing to do with me, my daughter is going to the same place to do her year abroad 40 years later.

  17. Haven’t been to see T2 yet but I’ve seen a few Huns have tweeted that they thought the Ludge seen was hilarious, they are all giving it 1690. Joey Barton tweeted Irvine Welsh to say he thought the ‘Penny Arcade Scene’ was funny.

The mountain is fine and the valley is even finer, I remember you telling me about your moniker a while back, still haven’t managed to get down there, life gets in the way of exploring, one day though.

I’m sure your daughter will love it, the longer I am here the more I like it and the more I am glad I made the move.

In saying that the mechanic that isn’t fixing my motor is in for a roasting the morra, it’s fine for him with a few cars, I am on a borrowed one and nearly two weeks to change the turbo is doing my nut in, but manana is the watchword :-)
