A money blog: CL, FX, Brendan effect, commercial deals

644

The spectacular rise in income, which saw Celtic bank £61.2m in the six months to 31 December 2016, compared to £52.0m in the TWELVE months to 31 June 2016, was influenced by four categories:

Champions League participation
Improved commercial sponsorship deals
The Brendan Rodgers effect
Foreign exchange rates

Clinging onto a lead that August night in Israel guaranteed this would be a record turnover season for Celtic, instead of what may have been a loss. As well as the Uefa dividend itself, we sell more tickets for other games in seasons we participate in the Champions League. We also sell more merchandise, premium packages and hot dogs at league games.

I was very surprised when news of the Dafabet and Magners deals filtered through last spring. Sentiment at the club at that time was on its bum, but these contracts brought a significant increase in income (in the case of Dafabet) and great income for a new property (in the case of Magners). Worthy mention also to Intelligent Car Leasing, for the boost they have given to the Foundation.

The ready-reckoner revealed that the value of these contracts roughly equated to one season’s Champions League money. It was a huge result, which laid a critical foundation for the steps the club took to secure a manager in May.

We were guaranteed more money, which gave us more confidence, which fuelled the move to secure a top manager. The small snippets of history are often missed, but no less fascinating.

Brendan Rodgers arrived like a superstar and has delivered on that promise. From the moment touched down in Scotland he sold season tickets, the club united behind a talented manager who is here determined to achieve great things.

capture-20170207-120456

No club in the world is more dependent on foreign exchange rates than Celtic (euro/GBP graph above). The economically illiterate (don’t start me) who voted for Brexit have caused an untold net harm to the world, but as sterling depreciated against the euro, the value of Celtic’s euro income from Uefa in GBPs went through the roof.

We are a football club playing in Scotland who earn euros and sterling in almost equal measure. Bad UK economic news may harm our sterling income but will boost our euro income. No other club operates a scenario like this.

Well done to all concerned, from Brendan and the players, to the tens of thousands who bought tickets and mechanise, and the commercial team and board.

King is probably contented with the situation. They wil probably be second or third in the league and European football, they still get 49,000 paying customers at home, so no need to spend any of the supposed £30 million he has available to spend when he thinks necessary.

    ——–

Think you could be right there. If they were 8-10 points behind us there would be more of a case to spend to make a challenge.

With things as they are there’s no (realistic) amount they could spend to “close the gap”. Easier for him to say it’s going to be a long, slow process!

It has helped raise living standards in the poorer parts of the continent ( West of Ireland,South of Italy) and has been a source of untold benefit in many aspects of European life

    What freedom would that be

Freedom for employers to exploit,no minimum wage, zero hour contracts, holiday pay, health and safety …all will go if the right have their way.

If anyone should understand the potential problems associated with mass migration without the approval of the people, then an Irishman should.

    Three hundred years on.

Successful migration is about numbers and assimilation.

Some immigrants have no wish to assimilate.

    They wish to dominate.

    Viz. The Ulster plantation.

Last March I had an evening meal in a Danish restaurant in Fuengirola.

It was organised by a Norwegian lady and the company of around 13 was made up of 4 Scots, 2 Irish ladies, a German family of 3, 2 Norwegians, one Swede and a Spanish guy who just turned up and joined the company.

Missing were a couple of Hungarians who had just moved jobs to Gibraltar.

When folk get together and treat each other as equals in every sense there is much more to love than to fear.

  20. The “economic illiterate” comment may have been misplaced and unfair (though I understand the frustration that gave birth to it) jf it is to be applied only to those who voted to leave the UK.

Nobody really had a clue, not Call me Dave, nor George Osborne, not the mega brilliance that is Boris Johnson or the unbelievable slitheriness that is Michael Gove. Jeremy Corbyn probably struggled too but since he was relatively silent on the whole thing, it is hard to say.

I have spoken to people whose job it is to be aware of the ins and outs of the EU and, during the campaign they were and still are struggling to understand all nuances of how the EU works and the ramifications of the leave vote. We are in a situation that is beyond our ken but we were also there during the campaign.

However, what is clear (and we all know it is true no matter how much some people like to deny it) lots and lots and lots of people voted to leave the UK because of immigration… no, rephrase that because they don’t like foreigners….. especially those refugee types that don’t even come from the EU. In some parts of the UK, people voted on the immigration issue because there were eastern Europeans (and refugees) some who were as close to 100 miles away from them.

There are interviews with many people who had never voted before, and who said they would never vote again, but they had been brought to the ballot box because of the immigration issue, controlling our borders and giving control back to Parliament, the irony being that a group of judges and private individuals were subject to vile abuse (Daily Mail and fellow travellers) for trying to do precisely that). Anybody remember the BBC interview with a guy with a swastika tattoo on his neck outside a Polish food shop? Eastenders drum roll…you’ll have to wait until next time to find out how he voted and why

It is now in vogue to come out with the type of drivel that we got in the 80’s about “political correctness gone mad”. Then, it gave the green light to an aggressive right wing to do and say whatever they pleased and damn those it harmed.

On a smaller scale on a wee, but grand, blog about Celtic, it is now okay for someone to say that a feminist is someone who has forgotten that she is a woman (Trump advisors and their friends’ websites make it okay to say such things)… clearly oblivious to the fact that it is possible to be a male feminist (It’s about equality, you know?). Brexit and Trump has let a rather nasty and vicious genie back out of the bottle, I fear.

It would have been good if his fellow travellers in that conversation had pulled him up on that but that’s me wishing on a star, I suppose. (and before anyone asks. No, I am not Rose Royce fan.
