Aberdeen-Celtic in proxy for the final

244

Aberdeen were on fire in March, winning all four games, scoring 11 without response. Form since has been a contrast. They fell apart at home to Newco, and to St Johnstone, snatched a win against Hibs at Hampden, but recorded decent wins away to Hearts and St Johnstone.

With Celtic already champions and Aberdeen having secured second place, tonight’s Premiership game will be a proxy for the real event when the teams meet in their second cup final of the season in three weeks.

I can’t see Brendan Rodgers experimenting with youth, as he did against St Johnstone last week. The last thing he’ll want is to give Aberdeen encouragement ahead of the final. Much better to give them a bloody nose.

There’s probably a token Tim in there – mibbe making the tea or sumnthin’…

*when I was lad of 18 summers I won the apprentice of the year award, this entitled me tae a spell in the head office working with the engineers, it would pay off because I eventually became one albeit years later and lots of hitting the books.

Anyway, this was the biggest home builder in the UK and a worldwide construction giant. They had a subsidised meal, soup and a hot dish. On a Friday for some reason they had fish on the menu, however, they had tae send out for a tin of tomato soup for the only casey affleck in the building, a woman on the switchboard. That summer she and I got tae share it.

Doubt if the same situation occurred down in Hammersmith where the international head office was. Only in Scotland.

Robert Nairac and the Glenanne gang went hand in hand. The consensus is, that, Nairac was sent to Ireland not to prevent terrorism, but to wage it ! by playing both sides off the other hoping they’d both wipe each other out

Champions League without Celtic? Couldn’ae care less, never watched the semi finals. If I had to choose a winner it would be Juventus as I have good friends who are big supporters and I can’t stand Royal Madrid.

*unfortunately like a lot of my generation we were huge Real fans growing up. They had some magnificent players including Raymond Kopa who played in the losing Rheims side in the inaugural EC Final before moving to Madrid.

Another four followed culminating in that fabulous final at Hampden where we were entertained by, among others, the finest player I ever saw in the flesh Alfredo DiStefano, the Galloping Major Ferenc Puskas, Francisco Gento, José Emilio Santamaría Iglesias, and Luis del Sol Cascajares.

As wee bhoys in primary we would go out intae the playground with our white shirts and shorts rolled up tae display the white lining on them, we were mini Galácticos.

I have mentioned on here how I was stunned only 6 month later to hear on the wireless as I was getting ready for school that our beloved Real had been eliminated by their deadly rivals, whit!! I thought that AM were their rivals, who were this Barca mob, another 6 months later and I’m cheering on hearing the Águias had defeated those upstarts.

5 years on and I’m a happy wee mhan as we had clinched our 1st title in 12 years and RM had retained their beloved EC, for that achievement they got tae keep it and a new cup would be presented to the next winners, another wee club who, like Barca, had also battled adversity because of their culture.

We were all young and naive back then not knowing that RM were Franco’s side, so what if they were, he was a Catholic and had the backing of the church and had battled the feared “reds”. Stunning really when years later I did get to know my history and that I had come from a wee part of the world, known as “Little Moscow” that had, per head of population, provided more members of the la Quinta Brigada than any other part of the UK. There is a statue of a bull in the Renton honouring these brave men.

We also did not have the knowledge then that Franco was influencing Spanish football the way Ceaușescu would a couple of decades later in Romania with his favouring Steaua București. We were not to know that he interfered in big Alfredo’s transfer from Columbia to Barca even though he had played a game for the Catalans.

So like most of my contemporaries I started to favour Barca, more especially on hearing how our supporters had been “attacked” by Real fans outside their stadium after an EC game in 1980.

In saying that I still visited the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium several years ago and had my photie taken with their Big Cup. On the way in the open top bus Mrs. TT spotted another fitba ground, “are we going there next”, she asked, 2 words were uttered “nae chance”.

I also don’t want Man Utd to win the UEFA cup, can’t stand Mourinho, Porto apart his achievements are those of a chequebook manager.

*Seville is enough for me, apart from his cheating diving tactics there were also his fawning of our support by going over tae applaud them at the end. Then there was his over the top touchline celebration at OT when his team equalised sending them through tae the quarters much tae the disdain of sir furious who I was sure if he had caught him would have gubbed him, still cannae believe he sanctioned his appointment.

A wee Raphael who self titled himself, the pretentious one owes it all tae a far better man than he’ll ever be Bobby Robson who scored englands opening goal at Wembley as big Frank was being crucified between 2 thieves 2 weeks after Holy Saturday.

So come June 2 I won’t be watching the EC Final and nor will I 16 days earlier watch the other one where one team with a sleekit manager plays another with a thuggish support, nae friends of Celtic either.

As for Barca no longer can they call themselves “Més que un club”, not with the diving, tax avoiding cheats in their line up, no different from a club/company in the south side of Glasgow.

You have managed to articulate exactly how I felt about Real with all of their wonderful players when I was a boy. I actually had tears in my eyes when they failed to win the EC in 1961. I too was glad when they won it back against Partizan in 1966 and then, slowly over the years we began to learn that maybe they weren’t the good guys after all. To be honest, as someone else said last night, I wish all four teams contesting both European finals could lose.
