Being competitive and disinclined against Bayern

362

History makers on Saturday but Brendan Rodgers and his players will have nothing but tomorrow’s game against Bayern Munich on their minds today. In truth, the 100-year-old 62 game unbeaten run achieved by Willie Maley’s team looked like it was equalled despite minds being focussed on Champions League duty.

While there was no shame in losing 3-0 in Munich two weeks ago, Celtic were poor. It was not until Bayern achieved their objectives Celtic players looked less intimidated. We were unpicked repeatedly in defence while we retreated under the merest pressing from Bayern.

A win tomorrow is not beyond Celtic, but win or lose, we have to learn how to compete against teams of this level. We have endured harsh lessons against Barcelona and PSG over the last 13 months. Progress would not necessarily mean repeating the kind of remarkable 2-1 victory we got over Barcelona five years ago, being competitive in the game and defending with discipline would be a start.

    ………………..

See you in BV around 3pm young man !

Ive always loved all kinds of music dating back decades, and I have been complimented even most recently on my knowledge of who sang what and when…depending on era’s and genre of music.

I don’t know if this is up your street OLDTIM, but although the Hollies were excellent many thought that “The Fortunes” were even better back in the late 1960’s.

I can’t do any link, but look them up on youtube…you may get a nice surprise as how good those boys were /

    thats only one example.

I play the Jukebox in my local every time I am in, and even the staff and the owner give me money to play…and they insist that I pick the tunes.

I do a very wide selection of stuff including,

    Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran etc,

    The Crystals,

    The Ronettes,

    Beatles..obviously,

    Stones…obviously,

    Free,

    Bad Company,

    Badfinger etc etc

    Sam Cooke

    George Benson

    The Springfields..”Island of Dreams”

    John Lennon

Tommy Edwards from 1958 with ” All in the Game” etc etc.

  2. I was watching some videos on youtube earlier and Jason McAtear of Eire and Liverpool was saying how his nickname became “TRIGGER”.. as in Only Fools and Horses.

He said it was because he would open his mouth without engaging his brain ( much like myself).

Anyways, he was telling the story of the very 1st time he was in Dublin after a match and walked into a pub and asked the barman….” Do you sell Guinness” ?

Hence became his nickname ” Trigger and/or Triggs”

  3. OLDTIM,

My oldest favourite song is one that my old Da always sang at parties….” He’s in the Jailhouse Now” by Jimmie Rodgers in 1928 !…It’s superb.

Johnny Cash did an ” alternative version in the 1960’s..but he changed the verse’s…but kept the chorus.

I play it in my local pub jukebox…and a lot of the auld yins love it….and it always kicks aff a hell of a lot of bar saloon yodellers ! It’s a great laugh.

  4. Meant to add..the song “He’s in the Jailhouse Now” also featured in the movie ” O Father where Art Thou” with a certain Mr George Clooney and ” The Flat Bottom Boys”.

I think ‘In the jailhouse now’ was originally recorded by Arthur ‘blind’ Blake ,one of the greatest ever country blues singers.

    ……………………

Ah well now “The Kinks” one of the greatest ever…way way ahead of their time…and when they released the song “Lola” around 1970 (?)…me and my mates were saying that very opinion.

Also their song ” All Day and All of the Night”…was superb…check out The Stranglers doing their version of that Kinks song…superb !

I bought many Kink records from the late 1960’s…

I only mentioned a few that I play on my local pubs jukebox there’s also

    The Shirelles

    The Seekers,

    Canned Heat,

    Springstein,

    Frankie goes,

    The Four Tops,

    Temptations,

    The Drifters,

    Bruce Willis,

    Jimmy Nail

T-REX…WOW !….”Get it On” is one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time imo. I saw them twice in Glasgows GREEN’s Playhouse twice in 1970 and 71.

    David Bowie

etc etc to name but a few.

  13. Apologises…I wasn’t aware of the Blind Blake version nor Leon Russell version much later obviously.

Apologises again..in the movie ” O Brother Where Art Thou”…it was the “SOGGY ( not flat) Bottom Boys…gettiing muxed up between my soggy and my flat !

  14. BR has to rotate his large squad of players such as Olivier Ntcham, you don’t cost £4.5million of hard earned fairly earned money to sit out home bread n butter league games, similarly Michael Johnstone has to get game time, whilst players need game rest.

For the fans that say too many changes, not so, as everyone of them would have declared home win at K.O. with the strong side BR selected.

His attacking formation with endless passes doesn’t always win, and Stevie Clark is a wiley that kept WBA afloat for a long time n a better league.

Another home draw and cash tomorrow for which I’d bite your hand off.

  16. Last weekend Huddersfield beat Man Utd, on Wednesday Wolves lost on penalties to a strong Man City team. At the weekend Girona beat Real Madrid. This is football. We can get a positive result tomorrow night. At the very least we should be looking to give them the fright of their lives.

We are too passive in the group stages. We are on a run of three matches without a goal at home. We need to go back to basics, rough them up a bit (cutely) and run ourselves into the ground for the cause. It can be done.

  17. Girona-Madrid highlights on Sky just now, the work rate from the Girona boys is incredible.

  18. TTR- Agree, if we can close them down quickly in MF, we could get better possession in their half, if we stand off them…..i think Dembele will start, possibly Forrest and Sinclair wide in a 5 across the middle, Brown, Armstrong and 1 more in the middle

  19. Bada

Roberts being out is a blessing in disguise. He’s a phenomenal player but a passenger at this level. I genuinely believe we can match them all over the pitch. My biggest worry is set pieces, which is another reason to start Moussa as he defends the front post well. I think Moussa is key, if he can rough up their centre halves it will lift the whole team and the crowd.

That’s a stunning track, one I’d never heard before the bootleg series and biograph came out. Up till then,I’d thought Abandoned Love was his best-or most styooopit-discard,closely followed by Blind Willie McTell.

He really was prolific when the mood took him,but tbh sometimes I wonder why, when he had recorded some fantastic stuff,he inflicted us with regular issues of less.

I love the guy, contrary bassa that he is. So does Rolling Stone, there’s some cracking videos on this.

    Kas Eupen ( who ??) 2 -Anderlecht – 3

3 up with 60 minutes gone -they contrived to lose 2 in the last 30 — hanging on . Really, really poor defensively.. Keen to do pass the parcel with the ball. .Look like a team short of confidence and faith in each other . . There for the taking (IMO )

Also watched extended highlights of this ( we pensioners have lots of time on our hands )

    PSG 3 — Nice 0.

    Easy . . a high class team

If I understood the French commentator correctly – he was of the opinion that they look more of a team ( and a happier one ) without the Moi / Moi / Moi that is Neymar.
