Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

  1. Woeful, absolutely Woeful

    Defence needs sorted 🤔

What about defending from the front, and going through the midfield

Sorry not seeing anything any area of the pitch, to say we are knitting together as a team

Just watching the 5th goal again, how lay is Bitton there

    😡😡😡

Also remember the Arsenal 5-1 game, not hopeful of a similar season as a follow up

    Squire

    Truth though

    ———

    Eh?

    Your opinion, maybe.

When did ‘Nikla’ make any comment on LG situation?

  3. quadrophenian on

The bit that intrigues me is that the first 45 line-up seemed to know what the plan and shape was; obv Ange’s first team. The 2nd 45 – who I guess must be at the same training listening to the same instructions etc – were all over the shop and only managed a few of that excellent linkup stuff.

Sure they’re young but they’re the best young players available in Scotland (and some surrounds)?

That’s where the fitbal brain comes in: Cal, Ryan, Soro, Turnbull, Liel all looked like they were revelling in the game plan. A real Hyde and Jeckyl run out.

  4. Just back in from the game. West Ham, indeed most EPL teams are miles and miles in front of us. I’m glad we won’t come against that calibre of player every week, we couldn’t live with them once they settled. Now we have to put this behind us and move on. Wednesday is a big test but we desperately need players for the season ahead, por cierto.

  5. There were supporters inside Celtic Park today – that was a positive. I would love to find others, but in all honesty, can’t.

Steady progression during the season is the best we can hope for – I think there are some potentially exciting individuals, but they will need time.

If we can get anything for Christie and something for Edouard in the coming weeks, it will help in the long-run, as I don’t foresee much, if any, CL/EL income this year. This is a rebuild season and we still have to lay the foundations, so there will be no quick fix.

I don’t condone the booing of one of our own players.

Griffiths is past his ‘(any)use by’ date – I was disappointed that he was kept on. Rogic, Bitton, Ralston & Barkas, are in the same category, I’m sorry to say. Tom was always a ‘bit-part’ player, but he did give us some great performances & great moments to remember him by.

To be in decline at a time when Ibrox is on the rise, is a bitter-pill to swallow – but we are where we are……let’s get on with it.

keep your chins up bhoys we can do this.

How many chins do you think we have?

I seemed to have developed a second one recently… :)

  8. If Griffiths was a hun he would be vilified on here. It should make you proud that Celtic supporters won’t accept his behaviour. Maybe you have to have a daughter to understand why his behaviour is unacceptable. Even although I’m an older supporter, I’m really hopeful that the younger Celtic support have a better understanding of what it means to support Celtic.

    100%.

Just because someone is wearing the hoops should not allow them to do what they want without criticism.

He is a disgrace to the jersey he wears.

  10. Our main shareholder, who decides who our manager will be and who stuck with NL far too long, can take the blame for this. He is only interested in getting us into the EPL as part of the Old Firm and so didn’t give a damn about NL’s disasters in Europe. The EPL won’t be impressed by results like this. It’s a tough job for Ange to get us into the CL and start the league campaign while still rebuilding. The rebuild should have started two seasons ago by moving on Rogic, Bitton and Griffiths among others. The sooner DD goes the better.

  11. How long has Julien been oot?.

He’s been injured longer than the King was!, and he snapped his leg in two ffs…

People please remember on here that Leigh has had mental issues..

Don’t want this to end badly for the laddie and his family…

  12. squire danaher on

    GORBALSTAM on 24TH JULY 2021 5:22 PM

I am generally agree with much of what you say.

Someone said earlier that you don’t need to be convicted of criminality to bring yourself and, in this case by extension, your employer, into disrepute, which is a fair enough point.

I have a daughter and I do not condone his alleged conduct and sympathise to an extent with the negative reaction.

However I think that the media now have a story which they will run with and attack us with to the hilt – so what’s new.

He is now a distraction and i get the impression most think it would be best for all concerned were he to move on.

However, where does this fit in with the support’s previous collective defence of him on the issue of his – presumably ongoing – mental health concerns? We turned a blind eye to his conviction for racist conduct regarding singing the Skacel song – although the GB raised questions.

Are we allowing a faction of the support to speak for us all??

    Been down this road before.

  13. We had a good goalkeeper. BR dropped him after he had been our only good performer at the Bigotdome. Why? Our present keeper is a huge liability.

  14. I reckon the scale of the rebuild ahead is now clear to all.

We should stop the infighting and name calling.

    We are poor.

This season is a rebuild. It shouldn’t be, after our recent superiority, however we are where we are.

2nd place in the league and a cup win are realistic goals.

    ADI_DASSLER NOT FOR 2ND BEST on 24TH JULY 2021 5:42 PM

    So you absolve him then?

  16. 79CAPS on 24TH JULY 2021 5:40 PM

We have three poor keepers but I personally think Barkas is the worst of the three.

Some might point to his performances in Greece but it’s irrelevant to me. He’s not doing it for Celtic and probably never will.

  17. SQUIRE DANAHER on 24TH JULY 2021 5:35 PM

As far as I can tell there’s no section of the Celtic support who seek to speak for us all. In this case I’d hope that the majority of the Celtic support would conclude that Griffiths behaviour was unacceptable. I didn’t get a ticket today but I’ve always believed that wearing the hoops brings an extra onus on a player with regards to their behaviour. I’d have booed him.

  18. celticforever on

i agree that this season is a rebuild but I still want to win the league

and dont think the huns are as good as made out to be

We will have new players starting in the next few weeks who should

find it easier to adapt to Anges system

I believe when that happens and we click we will take some stopping

In Scotland that is but this season we should forget about europe

  19. There was more cheering for Leigh Griffiths than boos. Not saying that to sway one way or another, just a matter of fact, por cierto

  20. Celticforever

I want us to win the league this season. Massively. I do not believe we will. Without wishing to sound confrontational, do you?

I suspect the new boss will need at least this season. Our best hope seems to be an implosion of our rivals.

Talk of pre season friendlies in 1987 is as irrelevant as it is retro.

Honest conversations and clear heads are required. Emotion rarely wins

  21. Geebee

I agree. None of them is good enough, though Barkas makes Bain look brilliant.

Again I think we’re not a million miles apart.

I think booing him is counterproductive.

I wouldn’t have booed him because I’m old enough to respect the jersey no matter the individual wearing it

I don’t condone his alleged behaviour and bringing the club into disrepute.

I think he needs shown the door but am uncomfortable at how it’s playing out.

Very sensible post it may reduce the temperature somewhat.

I live down south and see a lot of West Ham. They didn’t get their PL position last season luck.

We have to take this on the chin and get on with our preparation for next week.

They also got their EPL finishing position with three first choice midfielders missing today

There’s no polishing today’s heap of brown stuff.

The manager gets a pass from me as he has inherited a bombsite.

  27. The vagrancies of being a football fan.

Wed, much better than anticipated. Ahead of where we all thought we were, Fighting chance of progression.

Saturday, Hopeless, men against boys, embarrassing, we will be lucky to finish second

    It was ever thus..

  28. I reckon at least 12 of the current first team squad are surplus and not good enough , manager needs to be ruthless.

  29. Notthebus

I really encourage specifics. Do you think we’ll finish 1st this season?

If not, are you confident we’ll finish 2nd?

Personally, I prefer to give my own opinion rather than criticising others.

    Discussion is good. It’s healthy

  30. Duffy given a huge cheer at the Bigotdome playing for Brighton today.

Has to be more humiliating than being booed….

  31. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

At 1-3 I did fear a cricket score. Instead we got a tennis score. Neither of which Desmond cares for as they’re not golf.

I say let’s stick with the young lads in defence. They’re cheap.

On Wednesday night I look forward to a whole lot of ‘it’s all about the league anyway’ from the PLC applauding posters. I’ll set my watch for it.

After Saturday that might change again. Terrible when the Board critics are supported by the facts innit?

Note to football operations re next pre-season. Enough with cognitive dissonance. Stop organising humiliating friendlies with EPL sides whilst building League 2 standard teams. Just own it and book Chesterfield, Bamber Bridge, Tamworth etc if you really must play English opposition.

huns will be loving today- give them plenty of encouragement.

Their B team is 0-0 at halftime with Brighton and Shane Duffy at halftime. I guess Seethin G is saving the first team for Real Madrid tomorrow.

More importantly, we haven’t won in 4 games, and look nowhere near ready for the mini-huns a week today. Posters here pinning a lot of hope on Julien, but he might not be fully fit for weeks.
