Celtic get the ball rolling with Griffiths

318

So Leigh Griffiths is set to be a Celtic player today.  I bet we could all guess a few topics covered at induction.  He is in because he scored 23 SPL goals for Hibs last season, more than anyone at Celtic achieved, and is currently Wolves top scorer with 12 goals.

Despite appearing to predictably win games 4-0 recently our problems in attack are evident.  Anthony Stokes is our top striker but has scored less than half Kris Commons’ total, while defender Virgil van Dijk matches or better the rest of the strikers tally.

Leigh is the second striker we’ve brought in this month but at 6’2” Holmbert Fridjonsson is a completely different proposition.

More later on this and others, I’m sure.

Celtic have agreed a fee with K.V. Oostende’s Belgian under 21 striker Axel Vandenbroeck. #celtic #bhoys

The players agent A.A. Broeckdune has said that Axel is really looking forward to coming to Celtic and is hoping for a quick start.

  3. BigChipsUK – There are only two SPL teams in Glasgow… Celtic and Partick Thistle:

Has Callum McGregor, playing for a much less talented team than Wolves, and playing from centre-mid not out-scored Leigh this season, and we spend money on a striker who can’t out-score a centre mid whilst playing in a much more talented team, a team that does not face the parked bus every week either?

  4. Apparently this Belgian player Axel whatever his name is is unfindable on google.

If he is real then he is under the wiki radar as far as I can see.

The club is the one we have a tie up with in Belgium so it could be for real.

  5. Celtic are close to signing K.V. Oostende’s Belgian under 21 striker Axel Vandenbroeck.

Leigh Griffiths at Celtic Park to agree terms and have medical, as expected. Deal confirmed later today.

  6. According to soccerway there is no-one with the name Vandenbroeck who plays for oostende or Belgium under 21s. There is a young Dutch midfielder name Benjamin Vandenbroeck who plays for den bosch in the Netherlands. Most footballers have their own wiki page, he doesn’t.

  7. Rumours that Fleetwood have released defender Conor MacLaughlin!

Bored with this bland Transfer Window. :-(

  8. Someone mentioned Groundhog Day last night. Got me thinking back to the beginnings of CQN.

I was an avid reader of Paul’s articles. They were a breath of fresh air, unlike any available elsewhere. It took me a wee while to cotton on to the comments section, but when I did, it was largely a discourse between Neganon and Paul.

That was worth reading, too. Neganon challenged Paul’s understanding of things and all of that put together was educational.

Over the years, ‘are you a hun?’ became the initiation question. All (or mostly) in good fun.

However, what has emerged is a deep rooted negativity. Borne, I think from people seeing the blog as Championship Manager for CEO’s. we should have done this, we should have done that.

However, surely, in the world of moving to another league, suing the SFA or even buying and selling players – there are so many unknowns, that such speculation can be no more than fat gas.

Example….any player that we think we like…..whether it be Finbogasson or anyone else…..the minute his agent thinks an EPL club might have an interest….ghe simply is not coming to us.

We can moan on as much as we want on the blog about how Peter Lawell doesn’t know what he is doing…..

But, we are a 5k to 20k a week club, interns of wages. I think. With maybe a once-in-a-while 30k.

The minute an EPL scout shows up at a game, that player’s agent is contemplating 40k and upwards. Example, there was a Cardiff signing who was on around 6k at his old club, but signed for 45k. Shouting at PL to get the finger out doesn’t quite bridge that gap for us.

On Joe Ledley, I will be very disappointed if he leaves, especially for nothing. Why was he not signed or sold when he was worth millions? PL and NL would have known that Victor and Hooper were not going to sign new contracts. The tough decision would have been made not to sell Ledley and hope they could bring him around. Selling him last summer would have been financially sensible, but would have been a step too far in light of so many other exits.

So, balancing all these things is not easy. There is so much that we don’t know or understand, and so many things the club cannot put in the public domain. None of the budding CEO’s on here are willing to recognize that, it seems.

    And, while I am here…..

I like Tony Donnelly’s postings. Not because he is a polite, thoughtful soul. Sometimes he isn’t….

But because he supports Celtic. Through thick and thin. And he says it. And the moaners don’t like it.

In an imperfect world, where we are next door to the richest employers in the world, where we are trying to manage two realities (domestic and Europe), where we will never get the bling players we want…..there are people behind the scenes working really hard to make us better……once in a while (maybe not during a transfer window), but once in a while……take a moment and say Thank You.

    Thank You, Celtic

  9. SFTB. Izzy. Sold. Nae way liar. My favourite player

Brown. Waste of money nae mate lying again

With both of the above players ( who have always been my favourites ). I stayed out arguments about them

Making up stories now. Do u work for DR???

  10. Kitalba

“All those players I mentioned, did they spend 6 months in the reserves, development squad, u’19′s, or did they go straight into the team of the week (bench included)?”

I have to go shortly but I feel you are now making a more nuanced point. There are players we sign that are only good enough to be added to the mix of youngsters and fringe players who are trying to oust the current holders of the first team jerseys. All teams have this approach. Projects and prospects, in that definition, are a good thing, because your current first 11 will not and should not remain your first 11 for ever and ever.

I know you are for promoting our youth and I sympathise to that, up to the WGS point, that they merit promotion. All these players need managing in the selection department.

For example, Darnell Fisher has done really well but I’d still class him as our 3rd choice right back- what should we do about that? Stick with him as he rises up the pecking order? Sell him because we have ab embarrassment of riches in that position? Loan him out for more game time and risk being pilloried because “they never come back, thae loanees”?

Its a harder job than we make it sound at times.

I’ll catch replies later as I’m off oot to ooze elsewhere :-)

Could Axel Vandenbroeck be the new Hertz Van Rental?

Hope he’s passed his driving test. If not, someone needs to call Glasgow City Council’s UFH Department…

I would never dream of twisting your posts, I don’t think I’m that strong.

  13. Kit. You are entitled to your opinion about pukki

I remember a drunken late night phone call to my mate in Germany last year about pukki He saw him with shalke Not very good was his comment

Opinions is what it’s about. I don’t think he will every start many games

How ironic that at the end of their SFA imposed embargo, their finances have imposed another one!! #Sevco #Karma

  15. sdtb:

You are doing it again. Go back to my original post about the players who were never projects, yet you decided to take it on yourself to redefine them so.

Don’t digresse. I’m waiting on my mate to come on and I don’t want distractions.

  16. My thoughts

Ledley i like.. Good player who in my eyes always gives 100%. Not blessed with great skill so doesnt stand out alot… Id keep if possible bit if he aint signing new deal clear his locker tonight and get what we can.

Griffiths- will score in Spl , alot actually and happy days but if he is our number 1 striker come june we will struggle to qualify for group stages.

Im more frustrated that 2/3 yrs after making debut dylan mcgeouch is now sent on loan.. I have saw him alot but only a game here or there so im unsure if he has it, he along with others should have been given a good 12game run or shipped out long ago.

I have a feeling, thats all it is that ledley an sammi would stay if given the same as their current deal, but we are offering them less than that.

  20. Italian msm linking Celtic with Carlo Testadicazzo – a striker, aged 19, – who has scored 99 goals this season for Fanoschiffo a club in Serie D – the fifth tier of Italian football.

He has been described as a ‘project’.
