Celtic get the ball rolling with Griffiths

318

So Leigh Griffiths is set to be a Celtic player today.  I bet we could all guess a few topics covered at induction.  He is in because he scored 23 SPL goals for Hibs last season, more than anyone at Celtic achieved, and is currently Wolves top scorer with 12 goals.

Despite appearing to predictably win games 4-0 recently our problems in attack are evident.  Anthony Stokes is our top striker but has scored less than half Kris Commons’ total, while defender Virgil van Dijk matches or better the rest of the strikers tally.

Leigh is the second striker we’ve brought in this month but at 6’2” Holmbert Fridjonsson is a completely different proposition.

More later on this and others, I’m sure.

Celtic have rejected a bid for ‘a recent addition to the squad’, thought to be either Pukki or van Dijk #cfc

  2. Could LG be the next Frank McGarvey?

    Not as handsome ‘tho!

    Anyway, welcome to Celtic son.

Screw the nut and you will be fine. Buy a house in Croy.

I think LG WILL fill gary hoopers boots and more.

He will be very keen to do well and the team will benefit.

  4. There’s nine points seperating 10 EPL clubs from the bottom, and if you add the Championship contenders – £60 million or so at stake? For 16 clubs… there’s going to be a frantic couple of hours of wheeling and dealing.

Shame if Efe left today – I was looking forward to a settled partnership

Good luck to Joe if he goes.Always a great professional. Not the greatest player, but invaluable often.Welcome LG.Dont care about anything said about the boy,he is a goalscorer. Is that not what we wanted ?.If his name was Leon Griffoni,he was 6 foot and tanned,we would all be slabbering over the signing with his goal record. The most fickle fans sometimes.

We have brought in a terrific midfielder/playmaker,a proven striker, got money for a guy on his way out in the summer.Good business so far.Now to get the Greek god sorted.

I still think Lawwell’s choking the cheque book till the clive dunns come back, and hopefully thats not in my lifetime. You just know that LG will score at least 25 here next season but Europe’s another story.

I noticed last Sunday on Sky Neil McCann was speaking in superlative tones about our new Norwegian international, Stefan Johansen, so it looks like there is a replacement fit and ready to take Joe’s place – could be even a better player.

Good luck to Joe, he did well for the club, but at 800,000 grand I admire the nerve of a cash-rich EPL club and what’s this I’m hearing about Efe Ambrose and Fulham another relegation battler, surely not Efe. If true, I hope they can afford our asking price.

Balde need game time so a loan spell would make sense if Neil can only use him for 10 minutes every other game.

  10. Efe’s going nowhere – except to the World Cup in the summer as a Celtic player.

    Just my opinion of course

Puts pukki who is a 2.9m player even deeper on the bench

Wish we bought May to support griffifths

Pppps. Don’t think griffifths would have happened if palace had not bid 700k for Ledley. Just shows that all the vic money has gone

    Kitalba,

That’s my concern. A lot of Griffiths’ goals for Hibs were running onto long balls booted out of defence, with only one or two opposition defenders to beat. Totally different proposition to the way teams play against us. So not totally convinced by the logic of “he scored x for Hibs so he’ll score 2x for Celtic” theory.

Would have seen the logic of the signing if he was replacing Commons, but I don’t see him as a Hooper-type and that’s what we need. Somebody who knows how to make runs into the box, turn a defender, make front post runs when the ball is coming in from wide areas, etc.

  14. kitalba

Every signing is a project and a prospect until they nail down a first team place in this competitive Celtic squad.

No matter what price you are bought at:-

Rafael failed to nail a place down but Henrik and Lubo did.

Daryl Murphy and Mo Bangura failed to nail it down and they cost a lot of money but the “free” (actually very expensive) signings of Ledley and Matthews both got regular outings.

The jury is, or should be, still out on both Pukki and Balde.

I don’t think Scottish football has seen a concept of a settled first team, since the Dundee United squad of 1983.

Just for the sake of clarification, have we bought Leigh Griffiths as a first team player, or is he another project, only much cheaper?

    ———————————-

    Yes.

  20. A lot of people have pointed out that Leigh Griffiths is a limited player who may score goals in SPL but is unlikely to in Europe.

Maybe, but I’m not sure. For example:

Filippo Inzaghi was the most limited, one dimensional, uninspiring Italian forward I have ever seen – but he just kept scoring tap ins, sclaffs, and bounce of his ankles goals in Italy , in Erope and even at World Cups.

NB I am categorically NOT saying that LG is like Inzhagi. I’m just saying that you don’t need to be a Baggio or Messi to score goals at all levels.

    Reliable penalty taker.

Don’t moan for the sake of it. As long as he scress the nut he’ll be a good signing – a striker who scores goals, eventually we get one and the positive glass half full types are sceptical!

Anyway, Re. the Hibs long ball goals he scored – Tony Watt vs. Barca anyone?

  23. Have seen many a post demanding that Dermot Desmond should plough more of his supposed personal fortune into Celtic to fund all sorts of things. Question is, if you are one of those demanding that, how much would you plough in if you won 100 million pounds on the euro lotto and had multi millions to spare? Would you be willing to risk a few mill on Celtic. If so, how much and what amount you think would improve things to your satisfaction? Personally, I would not waste my money like that on a football team, not even my beloved Celtic.

  24. Celtic’s more counter attacking style of play in Europe appears more suited to Griffiths than playing against teams in Scotland with 10 men behind the ball. I think he may surprise many in European games.

    Spot on chief.

The goalposts in the CL are the same size.

You won’t get as many chances, thats certain, so to score in the CL you need a high conversion rate…which he seems to have – he doesn’t have a reputation for missing four chances then eventually scoring eg. the reputation Andy Cole eventually carved at Man U.

A two footed goalscoring striker – give him a chance.

  31. I don’t understand the Griffiths deal, I really don’t. Lennon must have seen something more in him then I have. If he signes, then I sincerely hope he does well, but he’s not the Number 7 signing we’ve been looking for for years.

I understand Fridjohnssen/Rogic type deals. Low risk with potential up side.

I would understand somebody like Finboggason if the money was right. I understand that those types of deals are very difficult to find. If those signing aren’t possible I completely understand if we buy nobody.

I don’t understand £1 million on Griffiths. Common consensus is that he isn’t a player who will make a great deal of difference in the qualifiers. At 23 it’s unlikely he improves to get us much of a profit down the line. Why bother. Keep the money, invest it elsewhere than in players. This is the signing we could make, rather than a signing we should make.

    Really underwhelmed.

I read an amazing feature on Inzaghi once (I think by Gabriel Marcotti) where he admitted he was a very limited footballer in terms of raw talent. He said he treated it like a 9-5 job spending hours watching videos of how defenders he might meet played and what the keeper would do in a given situation, so that when the time came he’d be in the right place and know what type of shot to try.
