Celtic set for HJK Helsinki in Champions League qualifier

679

Celtic will almost certainly face HJK Helsinki in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.  The Fins are 7-0 after the first leg of their second qualifying round against KR Reykjavik.

HJK were the first team to beat Martin O’Neill’s Celtic as they overcame a first leg deficit in the 2000 Uefa Cup to force the tie into extra time.  Chris Sutton scored late to prevent the tie going to penalty kicks.  HJK are also top of their domestic league after 17 games, so will be a well-oiled machine by the time the arrive at Celtic Park on 31 July or 1 August.

Thanks for the inspiring pre-match chat.

Celtic are a respectable European level team. If the bhoys show up at Celtic Park the 2nd leg will be a formality.

i agree with you 100% either we move forward with people who show the drive and determination to make us great again or we bob along the bottom. problem is the people in charge of our club have had over 5 years to improve the situation and we are no further forward. jesus, we have just set up our south karian website and it coincides with ki, if reports are accurate, leaving us, now surely that site should have been up and running 2 years ago?

i want the guys running celtic to look at the masses that support us and to develop projects that allow all fans/ supporters to contribute. i want celtic to have on offer more services/ facilities to make money at home and abroad, problem is you sometimes have to put money up before you see a return on your investment and currently the only way we will see that investment is if celtic can make it in the transfer market or via competition in europe because i dont see DD wanted to grow our club!!!

thing is, if celtic got for example 7 million for ki and made the CL group stages and decided to develop the old london road school people would be up in arms about wasting money etc… even if it was a wiser investment that buying another player. football is to short sighted to often hence the poor business decisions taken time and again

Sorry to ruin the fun, but Bandy is a Scandinavian brand of Hockey, which can be played on either grass or ice.

Keep it techt in Finland and we’ll be through.

Apparently the Finnish men are the longest in the showers, so keep away from the urinals to avoid introspection.

  4. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

A bit like the ole Ramsden’s Cup then- that can be played on either grass or ice.

  5. With regard to our board’s cautious approach to spending, I would say I agree with them and I think, given what we have witnessed across the city, they have been proven to be correct. Fair play, gentlemen.

However, I would like it if someone more financially astute than I could explain the following conundrum.

The board can only justify spending cash if we make it to the CL group stages. Net cash. Could we not buy now a player who Lenny thinks will increase our chances of qualifying (a gifted striker for €5 million, for the sake of argument), bring him in for the qualifiers and, should we still fail to make the group stages recoup the cash by selling a valuable but not invaluable existing member of the squad?

You have some good suggestions which should all be investigated.

I think we’re on the same wavelength alright and I think the appetite for change is increasing amongst Celtic supporters and Scottish football fans generally.

The TV money is poor in comparison to other countries.

Fan power is huge though- particularly at Celtic. This is our key to bridging the gap with other European clubs. I think it can be done- how do we set the wheels in motion? The power of the internet is a huge thing which we didn’t have in 1994 but it didn’t stop us then.

we have every right to play in CL qualifiers because we won the league, does not mean we will qualify for group stages.

here is a thing though, if we dont manage to get to the group stages how on earth can we claim our players are worth X, Y and Z. i would be very tempted to punt them all because you can be sure the teams we come up agianst in the early stages of the CL are paid a pittence of the money on offer at celtic park.

  8. Is re-development of London Road School part of the board’s plans? Would be great to see it (and about time as well!).

Man Utd and Ajax have excellent museums, we could certainly benefit form having something similar; perhaps commissioning folk like Pat Woods, Tom Campbell et al to research, present, and a curator to continually exhibit from different chapters in our history. The present day trophy room and stadium tour are, to be frank, utter rubbish!

  9. The Celtic Collection Store, Bishop

Street is the latest city centre

    business to close it’s doors.

The Derry branch of the merchandise

store which employs four people, will

    cease trading on July 31.

The shop opened in 2000 and at one

    time employed 12 people.

A store insider told the ‘Journal,’ that

the shop was “simply not making any

    money”.

It is believed trade has been adversely

affected by on line competition. Celtic

Collection is the latest retail outlet in

the city centre to close the doors as a

number high street chains have ceased

to operate from Derry City Centre in

    recent times.

Gutters or no gutters that will be a tough test.

  13. Pleased with the draw and I believe we will get through. However, I am realistic to know that we can get beat too and, even with a new signed Centre Back, we would still be vulnerable in most CL qualification matches.

We are probably a Pot 4 Level team though we can aspire to be Pot 3 with yet more progress and judicious squad re-cycling, that is, re-investing money made fro a surplus star midfielder to re-invest in the weaker areas of Centre Back and a striker with aerial prowess.

The truth is, that apart from the 66 to 74 period, we have always been at this level or below in European football. I do not see Lenny’s team as being on the brink of our Golden Era but I do see them as capable of getting us back to our Silver Era, the MON/Strachan years.

Very disappointed in the news about Lord Carloway. Sounds like we lost a battle there.

grassroute movements take place all the time and sites like this bring together like minded and not so like minded supporters. however, i dont think grassroute movements can truly change the dymanics that football clubs work to. clubs need to understand their value, their fan base and must be able to tap into that market, basically the football club need to make the offering which then allows supporters to opt-into the opportunities, some opportunities will fail some will flurish, those opportunities that flurish will see substancial benefits for the club over the longer term. i have been happy with the progress made in terms of the football department since NFL took over. progress in aother areas of the business seem to be lagging behind. i hope there are plans afoot to move our club forward.

Qualifying last year and the year before were hard for the old nerves to take, but once Sion were reminded that a transfer ban meant you could’t sign new players and that if you play with incorrectly registered players the result is a 0-3 defeat, Celtic acquitted themselves well in the Europa League.

We even gave the eventual winners a decent game home and away, although Atlético Madrid had too much quality in the end. Gary Hooper had a great chance to score in the first half in Madrid and it was a long time before they got the second. Udinese away was a great performance and we were unlucky not to beat them in Glasgow (soft penalty).

Ignoring Sion, the team did pretty well last year, losing only to the eventual finalists. If the team turns up, there’s nothing to get concerned about.

If we don’t pick up any injuries, I think our defence is stronger this year. No Loovens (occassional numpty), Big Dan (red card waiting to happen) or Cha Du Ri (smiling hari kari merchant.

When all the evidence of their crooked dealings are laid bare for all to see.

Will they be pleading innocent still…?

  23. If the LL spent as much time promoting Scottish fitba as they did in hyping up the huns then our game would be in a much healthier state.

As others have said, after Donky’s/Jabba’s/Regan’s et al’s vilification of our game, they have condemned it to a disadvantaged negotiating position in terms of sponsorship/TV deals etc. In what other line of business could guys with such blatant incompetency survive the embarrassing performance of their roles and duties?

Its not just the officials and administrators that need to go its the insidious bilge of laptop melon heads like Jabba, King, Hannah etc need to go as well. The Scottish game needs a Year Zero, a clean sweep, a metaphorical cull of the weakest and wounded of the MSM herd.
