I’ve read a few comments re Mathews not being fit and according to Neil when asked about Mathews at yesterday’s press conference he said their was no way Mathews would make today’s game as he wasn’t fit.

What changed from yesterday to today is anyones guess.

TET, I thought the team played like a Uni mob today managed by Jeanette Findlay ;-)

Said it on the way back from the game – expect the biggest talk up of Cup potential in a very long time – I expect them to get a mediocre tie next to safely escort them to the final. Count penalties and red cards until they get to the final.

People will accuse me of ‘them’ obsession but I see this result today galvanising two sets of support – especially the Govanites. Watch the purple prose flow…

  5. the long wait is over on

It seems to me our prorities in any given season are

    1. Win the league. At the moment a MUST – failure is not an option

    2. qualify for the CL. A MUST for the fans and , usually , financially.

    3. qualify for the last 16. Brillliant but not a must if we’re realistic

    4. Failing 3, qualify for the europa league. Going to be increasingly difficult as other leagues pull away financially.

    5. Win the Scottish Cup. Not going to happen every year by any means but failure to reach the final is , realistically , not good enough.

    6. Win the League cup. As 5 above.

Given that we will , barring a disaster , achieve 1 and that we have achieved 2 I dont think we can say the seasons a failure but its not a resounding success either .

For you guys complaining about the missing fans- I was working until 1 and ran to CP getting there just as the dons scored their second- ticket in hand I was knocked back from getting in to see us gubbed- great customer relations and probably the pisser that tilts me towards not renewing my ST for the first time since the Hampden season

SuperSutton. Fella it was an off day but in cup competitions we seem to have to many off days in my opinion. H.H.

    ——–

Point taken. But I don’t think it’s only NL who suffers from this as a manager. Only one team can win the cup and if it’s not us then somewhere in the competition we got beat. And since we are THE big team it means we got beat by a wee team. Raith Rovers, Clyde, ICT, Morton, St Mirren.. I guess the list is endless.

Losing to Aberdeen can’t really be too much of a surprise other than we were on an unbeaten run with defence that just doesn’t lose goals.

And maybe that’s why the cup competitions are so much different from the league.

When will most celtic fans wake up to the fact that Lennon is a piss poor manager

to drop Fisher and play a unfit Mattews, and to go with two midfielders against 4 was ridiculous, add to that the Zonal marking ,he really should go or Lawwell should sack him(of course he won’t as he doesn’t rock the boat when it comes to spending.

As for that Norweigian statue we signed,we should just have given his transfer fee to Ledley to get him to stay

Sadly I think the same applies to Balde and to Pukki.

I’d love to be proved wrong.

  11. Eyes Wide Open on

I think when looking for people to blame – the board are exempt when it comes to domestic football defeats.

Irrespective of ‘downsizing’, not providing funds to buy X, Y or Z – they still provide significantly more resources than any other club in Scotland.

The above arguments become valid when we play in Europe against teams with similar and sometimes lesser resources than us, but who some how either find a way to spend more money on players or who are able to find players who are much better football players than we do.

So you have to look closer towards the footballing side on days like today.

Neil Lennon mustnt have watched any of the match he was abused at last week because his tactics and team selection were wrong from back to front. Disrupting the back 4, picking Samaras, playing Samaras in the same ‘midfield’ as Forrest, gambling on the new signing being able to physically cope with the opposition knowing Samaras and Forrest have already effectively left you with Scott Brown in midfield.

He then left things too long – from the minute we scored the goal we were out fought.

The players who were picked can not be absolved of blame.

They are given the privileged position of being employed by Celtic and the honour of being picked to represent us because they have the ability.

The one thing Celtic fans just can not accept – is a lack of trying and anything less than 100% effort.

so when the opposition want to win the game more than you and ultimately do win the game, the reaction tends to be aggressive and passionate which sometimes spills over and yonder (when things are often said in the heat of the moment that come tomorrow morning probably wouldnt have been articulated perhaps as forefully)

We are all guilty of doing it at some time or other.

So guys – for those of you taking the ‘I am holier than thou’ stance today and whiter than white, just accept its peoples way of getting ‘it’ out of their system.

If it annoys you or offends you – then log off, because after a result like today – you know exactly what the mood is going to be like. do yourself a favour and just stay away.

1 domestic trophy out of 3 in todays scottish football is totally unacceptable though – so I think people have a right to express themselves.

  12. First thing my wife said when I got home was ‘at least we don’t have to play Sevco’.

I’d bet now Aberdeen will need to win once at Ibrokes, and twice at Celtic Park to lift the

    cup.

And three times at Celtic Park for the cup double.

  13. Consider this, where would you place this team/squad in comparison to others in the past 20 years ? In my view probably mid range at the best, If you think on in relation to our striking options and use a similar test, I feel they are at the bottom end.

My point is that we are going to lose games and yes important ones at that, that’s what we have.

Losing is always hard to take particularly when you lose the fight but it’s where we are at this time! Good but far from great !

The same probably applies to our coaching staff again, good but not great.

Regardless I will be there to support them and cherish every moment !

  14. Ross County, Liquidation FC, Kilmarnock, Hearts, St Mirren, Morton & Aberdeen have all knocked us out/beaten us in final of domestic cups in last 9 domestic cup tournaments.

Given the supposed domination we have, given that we have the budget of all of these teams combined, 2 wins in 9 cups is a shocking statistic even if you recognise that cup football can be unpredictable.

  15. At the very last minute I voluntarily chose not to go to the game today and elected to do something else rather than watch it on the telly so I aint going to comment on performances referees or crowd figures. However congratulations are due where congratulations are due firstly to the sheep for qualifying and secondly to Neil Lennon for providing a GIRFUY to the the Scottish media Scottish establishment and Scottish football authorities by single handedly depriving them of the opportunity of having an old firm confrontation to salivate over this season

  16. A couple a wee annoying things bouncing about the back of ma nut….

PL comes on, swaggering onto the stage wi his – “…another club, from another planet made a £49 million bid for Gary Hooper last night.” Cue the PL spaghetti western style daft laugh – put oan for the cameras !?!? Cue the next day…Sallys huns skelp Lennons lions 4-2 at ibrokes !?!?

Celtic beat Barca 2-1 at CP and PL’s oot telling us awe that – “….we’re up there wi the Barca’s blah, blah…the global brand blah, blah etc….

Cue the next day…Celtic lose to Killie for the 1st time in 55 years at CP !?!?!

PL comes out n tells us that – “Neil knows he can spend up to £8 mill on one player if, player is value for money…blah, blah…we have the biggest and best stadium in the country, and thats why the 2 Cup Finals will be played here etc….?!?!?”

Cue the next day at a less than half-empty CP….Celtic are knocked oot the SC by Aberdeen !?!?!

Anyone who can add anymore…feel free.

Unbeaten in the League. First domestic goals conceded since November, yep yeez are right, Team is rubbish and Lenny knows Eff All about Football Management, however fear not we have the best supporters in the world and they will see us through.

  18. I just can’t get my head around Sammaras’ inclusion in the starting line up. Did Neil Lennon seriously think that his work rate or lack of would have been up to the task ? Apart from his lack of attitude he just slows play right down.

Poor tactics from our Manager today.

  19. Are we really goin to play a CL qualifier on that murrayfield pitch?!

    ===========================

The only fact in that statement is that you obviously have an opinion which you treat as fact but others do not as is their prerogative.

However on your opinion I would disagree and were he to leave, many a club down south would be willing to pay good money because they do not share your opinion.

It was easier for Lennon to get it wrong today than it was for McInnes to get it right. A bit like when we beat Barca at CP, except Lenny was free that night to get it right by playing as if it were an away game.

It’s a strange one, the dislike of folk who went to uni.

2 cup finals at Celtic Park and we won’t have any say in either. Disappointing but not the end of the world.

Any season were we win the league and qualify for CL is a success in my book.

I’m not too bothered about the league run, it’s all about preparation for CL qualifiers now. The season is ending with something of a whimper

    ———————————————————————————————————————

The last time we failed to reach the quarter-finals of either domestic competition was season 81/82.

We also experienced our record defeat in Europe this season as well as equalling our record home European defeat.

Winning a one team league and scraping into the Champions League group stage does not equal success unless you have very low standards for the club.

Last season, we ended on a high note by winning the scottish cup with some style which should have been the platform for us to spring forward to bigger and better things this season. Instead we sold our best players and largely replaced them with dross, VVD being the obvious exception.

Lennon continues to make rookie management mistakes with his tactics and team selections yet seems to be immune from any criticism from some quarters.

If we prepare for next season’s CL qualifiers like we did this season then there’s every chance we’ll be playing in the Europa League (if we’re lucky).

The best preparation the club could make for the CL would be to replace the current management team.

  23. eddieinkirkmichael on

Just saw the goals there and while not making excuses, Ambrose was pushed by their goal scorer for the 1st goal and the second was deffo hand ball. In the refs defense for the second he couldn’t see the handball as he was behind the player but given that the Aberdeen player used both hands to control the ball why didn’t linesman see it.

  24. We had 5 players signed since July at a cost of circa £7-8m sitting on the bench today, deemed not good enough to start in what was our most important game in what remains of this season. Why? Who is responsible for this monumental waste of money on players who are apparently no better than Samaras, Stokes etc.?

  25. Celtic have been playing in champs league for a few seasons now, we should never be losing a match as important as today in that manner. Our second string midfield should able to deal with Aberdeen , yet our starting formation was unit-less , no shape.

Lennon for me is making too many mistakes and compromising the team for effort players and favorites.

Anyone who thinks Forrest is better that Hayes for eg, is as blind as Lennon. Yes he had a couple of decent runs and crosses , but his general play was extremely frustrating , poor touch and link up play . At Celtic with our high standards and European experience , this should be unacceptable to the managers , but he allows it.

We have not progressed as a football side.

Re profits , I suspect the board are keeping this for a new manager and for when the rangers come back if they survive,

Celtic needs to be ruthless with the great standards set and currently we are not.
