6 weeks until the end of the window, 7 until our first CL game

Our championship winning team is already improved with the arrival of a new left back. We should have enough against the teams we play in our first 4 games. We did last season.

Plenty of time to get it right

Good summary. We are only marginally stronger ( if that ) than last season. On the plus side, I expect our Japanese contingent to be more effective.

  3. Regarding transfers and players in/out.

Never a great reader of the Sunday Times (since the Ozzie Sherman Tanker took it over), I happened to read the Sports section today in a mate’s house. There is an interesting article by a guy called Jonathon Moorcroft on the theme of “fans’ transfer mania”. A good read in its own right, but the bit that caught my eye was on the stats regarding player turnover during the close season.

Basically he said that the correlation between success and squad stability falls heavily in favour of the latter. “The analysis reveals the general rule that the best performing teams (in the upcoming season) have much more stable squads than the least competitive ones (who tended towards large player turnover).”

He then goes on to quote a number of examples from both sides of the argument. From 2009 – 2017 the four clubs making the lowest % of signings were Bayern (6 league titles and one Champions League); Barcelona, who enjoyed the greatest period in their history; CSKA Moscow, three titles and three Russian Cups; and IFK Mariehamn, who won the Finnish league for the very first time. During one of those years the most active club with transfers was Diyarbakirspor in Turkey with a remarkable investment in over 96% in a new squad. They were relegated at the end of the season. As were Bulgaria’s big spenders that season.

Food for thought regarding the way Ange/Celtic are doing business?

Our defence was better than theirs last season and we’ve spent 4m on a new left back since then.

They’ve lost Bassey and replaced him with someone who was dropped for the last few games for Sheffield United because he was too lightweight.

Katic wasn’t wanted by Hadjuc Split, Helander is injured again, Souttar rumoured to be again, which is no surprise when you look at his injury record at Hearts. Katic is mince anyway, the Huns want to get rid of him.

Relax, we’ve got weeks to improve a defense that was better by a distance last season. We have plenty to deal with who we have to face between now and when the window closes

The only real loss to our squad from last season is rogic imo. Even then the January signings were done with rogic and bittons departure in mind. Ange has already got them covered.

This summer we have added a reliable backup keeper and a leftback to challenge for that position. We have brought back arguably the best winger and centreback in the country from last season. We have a well drilled team and a group of players who, for the most part, know how to play the system.

I still think we need a starting lefsided centreback, dcm and a forward/ winger. Ange has already said he expects 2 new players this week.

  6. CELTIC40ME…I disagree that our championship winng team is improved by adding Bernabei. Our LB position is definitely strengthened, but we have lost Rogic, Bitton and the safety net that the bit players provided when injuries struck. In my view, we are weakened compared to the end of May, hence my view that we need at least five more that can walk into the match day squad.

Agree that the Japanese quartet should improve after their first off-season break, but in a CL season, we need a stronger spine than we have currently.

  7. When the window closes, then it will be time to judge.

They will be a dangerous challenge for us as I would guess they will be too strong for most of the League.Nothing we can do about that. The head to heads will be important.

  8. disagree that our LB position has been strengthened , new LB looks more like a left winger than a defender.

  9. That moment when an absent Nir Bitton is causing panic amongst Tims is the time to log off for the day.

Damn those huns and their pre-season magnificence.

Cameron Smith, thank you,Bruce Springsteen ticket paid for, he attacked the course and won it,Rory will regret that round…..the course was there for the taking

  12. STEPHBHOY…Bitton is as big a loss to the squad as Rogic.

CELTIC40ME…we need to stop the comparison to Rangers, last time I checked, they had not qualified for the Champions League group stages…that is our benchmark now….we can’t limit ourselves to being just that wee bit better than the h#ns.

Would anyone be happy if our CL squad of 24 included an injured Starfelt, CCV, Julienne & Welsh as our CB options?

  14. What a week of Golf we enjoyed up at St Andrews.

So good for Scotland to be genuinely at the centre of the sporting world for such an iconic event. What a great finish today also.

Incredible win by the young Aussie. Passionate in a very different way to the young Sevie all those years ago. But sadly very shy it would seem. In a way it was good to hear him not so manufactured as many young American collegiate winners are these days. His golf did the talking. Another level. I would back him in a penalty shoot out.

So much we can learn from the golf as to how to put on a show. This was probably not why our chairman and the SPFL CEO were in the same facility on Saturday as each had family members with them. That fact will, of course, have the Bears Den on Follow Follow raging 😡 regardless.

Gio VB was there on Thursday also. Of course the foul mouthed Johnston of IMG was also there for the duration.

The town can get back to normal over the months ahead. The legacy lives on and the iconic status continues to grow.

It feels like now is about the right time to be turning the attention to the football season ahead. The CL rnd 3 qualifier draw will be of interest tomorrow.

Just watching the golf highlights on BBC. Anyone else find the BBC signature music for golf , like the cricket, to be the proper music which you wish all golf or cricket programmes were introduced with ?

CELTIC40ME…I disagree that our championship winng team is improved by adding Bernabei.

Our squad is weaker in numbers but not our team. Rogic started one of our last 5 SPL fixtures, and the replacements we already have for him don’t weaken our team more than Bernabei should improve us. I don’t think I we’ll miss Biton much.

The clear weakness in the team last season was left back which has hopefully been addressed, we have enough quality and numbers in midfield and we’re clearly looking to what we already have in those areas.

We’ll definitely add numbers to the squad between now and the end of the window, certainly if Julien goes.

The team, and the squad is for the whole season, not just the games in July and August.

  17. When we were linked with Davies a few weeks ago I thought not for me. Not for that money. He’d be on a hefty wage as well.

I’m happy with what I’ve seen from us this window with a couple more probably to come in.

The big thing now over the next few weeks is whether the huns qualify for the CL. But overall, we’re in good shape.

  18. HAIRLIKESPAGHETTI on 17TH JULY 2022 8:38 PM

To win the league we have to beat them so it’s only natural we look at how their plans for next season are progressing. But I do agree to a point, it’s not healthy to spend too long concentrating on what they do, especially if you’re taking your information from the usual outlets and choosing to believe the guff that comes from ftp towers vía the mainstream media.

The true test is always the trophy haul at the end of the season. Not where we stand before a ball has even been kicked in earnest.

Our cabinet suggests we’ve done a bit more than stay just ahead of them over the last wee while

  19. CELTIC40ME good to see that you agree with me, weaker than May and we need a lot more than just the two we can expect in next week ;) I get your point re Bernabei/Taylor, but the defence needs at least 2x CBs or we can wave goodbye to European nights after November…

Anyone familiar with the finances behind the SPOTTVNOW deal? Seems that mostly Celtic games every week of the season…How much is the deal and can I assume Celtic will see hee haw of this from the SPFL?

  20. !!Bada Bing!! on

Got to be much better than Davies about, a Championship player, who didn’t play a 1st team game for Liverpool i believe

  21. HAIRLIKESPAGHETTI on 17TH JULY 2022 8:38 PM

STEPHBHOY…Bitton is as big a loss to the squad as Rogic.

We can agree to disagree, it’s cool we have different opinions. Rogic’s replacement is in the building and bitton was a bit part players just like everyone else who has left the building so far.

I think the squad can and will get stronger with a few more signings. The season is 2 weeks off and the transfer market has 6 weeks to go.

  22. B78 @ 8.47

    Glad you enjoyed the golf.

It was a logistics lesson in itself watching it all come together.

I think it carries a huge lesson for the club.

If you have the product — they will come and they will pay big to be part of it.

We have the history / the back story / the charisma — all we need are talented boots on the park.

And when they come we need to be ready for them — facilities / services that will enhance the spectacle and encourage them to return.

The issue is not to be on a bucket list — it is to generate return visits.

We are in a much better place than the golf at KY16.

They have to cope with 50K crowds @ 4 days in 5 years.

We have to deal with 60K crowds @ 30’ish games per season.

Therefore we can afford to build efficient — permanent rather than hire in expensive tents.

If we make a name for ourselves on the park then we need to be prepared to put in the effort off the park — a good product with our history will attract a much enlarged following — we need to be ready to meet modern standards or we will lose business to L/pool / Spurs / NU / AV …

Better team / Better facilities — both needed / hand in glove = Better day out for the season ticket holders / casual attenders / attracting people from far and wide.

The current acres of tarmac prairie @ G40 just doesn’t cut it.

It gives the impression that the board aren’t that bothered.

They just take the easy money and nod off with “OF” dreams.

  23. HAIRLIKESPAGHETTI on 17TH JULY 2022 9:18 PM

CELTIC40ME good to see that you agree with me, weaker than May

No, stronger starting 11 than May already, with 6 weeks left to improve the squad.

We dont need to sign anyone at all right now. We can take our time and try and get real wuality to improve our team, like we did on the last day of the window with CCV and Jota

  24. STEPHBHOY67, agreed, I just feel that nobody we have currently replicates the role Bitton had, not first choice, but willing to cover a whole range of positions in defence & midfield, stand-in captain and a cool head when required to close games down.

As you say… 6 weeks to go, so plenty of time to let Ange replicate his success in the January window!

Just watching the golf highlights on BBC2 . Ken Brown talking about bunkers … ‘if you go in the principal’s nose , you’ll almost certainly come out with a bogey’ LOL .

  26. First game 2021 vs First game 2022 — we are in much better place.

Settled quad / 12 months with AP / Jan 22 recruits / better prep = huge strides forward.

Last game 21/22 vs First game 22/23 — the progress is much less clear cut.

We are missing our most creative player with a long repertoire of incredible play / important goals vs a new LB who looks to be a player but slightly less of he defender we had hoped for.

We are on a better footing with more coaching / experience of the game we need to play.

However we are still carrying our glass jaw with us and high tempo / high reward football comes with a lot of risk attached — we are sailing very close to the wind regarding losing embarrassing goals.

When they do come the issue becomes how will this affect our confidence?

And we need confidence to help us carry our emotional load.

Our best play yesterday was crest of the wave stuff — worry any team in the CL.

The issue is what happens when we fall of that crest — as we will inevitably do during the season — yesterday’s evidence suggests that we start to look inward and create problems for ourselves without any input from the opposition required.

That is the first hurdle we need to overcome this season — add resilience to our play.

Hopefully more training will help get us there — specifically a more robust defensive MF pattern to close the gaps that all to easily open up when we are put under pressure.

That and a couple of first team starters to add confidence / capability / experience.

We are looking good at the moment but we need to stretch it from 45 minutes to 90.

  27. HLS @ 9.38

NB vs Cool head — discuss?

Not what I remember — 50% success rate at best regarding playing at that game.

NB = 10 great games per season.

Half of them with his NT exploits.

Interesting player — some great play / just not enough of it.

Not sure we developed him as much as his base talent deserved.

  28. HAIRLIKESPAGHETTI on 17TH JULY 2022 9:41 PM

Never mentioned or questioned the strength of the starting 11, but crack on…

“CELTIC40ME…I disagree that our championship winng team is improved by adding Bernabei.”

Bring in a first team left back in a problem position while losing a bench player and someone who sometimes didn’t even make the bench means the team improves by most people measure

  29. AB @ LB — Is not on current showing a starter.

He looks very undercooked / raw / inconsistent — he might be a quick developer but GT would be my starter at LB for the first SPL game.

In his defence he seems to have a style of play similar to JJ.

  30. Does anyone know if there is a plan to replace the large banners that were around the outside of the stadium ?

    TT

  31. TT @ 10.11

I think we are going to do a bit of power-washing then put up slightly smaller banners.

I think one of the new — slightly smaller — banners is already up.

Please note — one says power-washing / everyone else says paint is required.
