Corky
Dinnae be daft! We should be singing about steralised stadiums and the like.
SILLY YOU.
Let The People Not Sing
For those who are in love
There’s a song that’s warm and tender.
For those who are oppressed
In song please don’t protest.
Don’t liberate your minds
Nor give your soul expression.
Open up your hearts,
I’ll sing for you this song.
Let the people sing their stories and their songs
And the music of this land.
Their lullabies no battlecries and songs with little hope and joy
So join us hand in hand
All across this modern land
Please don’t the sing about old times.
Don’t think about the music that kept their spirits free
Those songs of yours and of mine are unacceptable.
Don’t go back thinking of ancient times,
The bard shut up and stop telling your stories
There were no heroes, whatabout the villain,
Don’t worry or talk of the chieftains in the glen.
Nor Elizabethian time
Cromwell was loving nor warlord or and furious
Forget about our pipers to the sword,
And those who killed our harpers and our bards.
Ireland, stop that song,
Your music has gone forever
In its valleys, in its mountains,
In its hills and in its glens.
Our music has died
What famine and what oppression.
What generations are gone,
I’ll sing for you this song.

What a special day . Arriving early at Paradise , or anywhere ain’t one of my traits , but the early arrival gave me time to chat to a few stalwarts from these pages which is always a pleasure . I thought we were far from our best in the first half hour . Partly due to Hearts fielding a team of giants , who to be fair , were better organised than expected and also I think the occasion . How on earth , can you focus 100% on a game when you’re a Celtic player walking into an arena like that today ?
One word to describe the colour , noise and general ambience . Awesome . Second half , so much better . Home via the boozer to catch up with CQN and find a Lion has visited . Then discover I’m up top of the unofficial Goals for Shay leader board ;-)))
Loving all the links from today . What a team , what a club , what a support .
We live in a special time . Enjoy every minute . HH
Night all
Agnes Johnstone looks back fondly at a life well lived by her late husband, the Greatest Ever Celt.
Extracts:
“It was 50 years ago on Sunday that Agnes Johnstone gave birth to her first child. Ten days later, four lads from Liverpool would provide the soundtrack for the Summer of Love by releasing their era-defining album Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
In between, there was the small matter of Agnes’s husband Jimmy lifting the European Cup with Celtic.
Never the biggest football fan, Agnes revels more in the memories of her date nights with Jinky at Glasgow concerts by The Beatles and Roy Orbison than of any matches in which her man tormented the life out of an unsuspecting full-back.”
and
“Yet on that special May day half a century ago, she makes no bones about the fact her priorities lay not in the Portuguese sunshine where Jimmy helped defeat Inter Milan, but in a cradle at Calderbank Hospital in Lanarkshire.
‘I think I was the only one not to travel,’ recalls Agnes. ‘But I wasn’t really bothered. It was my first wean and that was more important.
‘Marie was born on the 21st and they kept me in for a week, so I never saw the game.
‘The nurses were in the next room listening to the wireless and they told me the score.
‘I had no visitors, sat on my own like Only The Lonely. Then my brothers came down, steaming. Five of them.'”
and
“Johnstone could always look after himself but, if needed, he had close friends like Bertie Auld to back him up.
‘I used to warn him not to get up and fight,’ says Agnes. ‘We had electricity bills to pay and the money went down if he got suspended.”
and
“Voted the Greatest Ever Celt in 2002 on the back of a supporter vote, Johnstone was already battling illness and wasn’t altogether comfortable with the accolade.
‘That was a great honour and he was chuffed but I think he thought there were better players than him,’ says Agnes. ‘He never bragged. He always said Bobby Murdoch never gave him a bad ball in his life.
‘And he definitely thought Larsson would get that award. Henrik was a nice boy, he used to phone up when Jimmy was sick…'”
and
“Agnes, strikingly youthful at 70, has fought her own battle with breast cancer but has looked on distressed at the case of former Rangers player Fernando Ricksen and his struggles with Motor Neurone Disease at the much younger age of 40.
‘That poor boy,’ she sighs. ‘It must be horrible for the parents of a young one to watch. ‘I’ve been in and out of hospital myself but with cancer there is a lot of hope now. This Motor Neurone, I don’t know if they will ever get a cure.
‘At least Jimmy helped bring it out in the open.'”
and
“‘Look at that Paul McCartney. I always had John Lennon on the brain, but my sister was into Paul. Now she says McCartney’s rotten, trying to look all young. I say: ‘Telt ye!’
‘Jimmy and I saw the Beatles up the town and it was fantastic. They were good days. And for everything else that happened Jimmy’s wish came true. All he wanted to do was play for Celtic.'”

Awesome experience, it’s hard to say you enjoyed visiting a Cemetery, but I actually did.

I did the glasnevin cemetery tour last year. Very good, very well done.
I went to school across the road from the cemetery. Was always fascinated by the graffiti on the wall of the graveyard which said Eiroimid Aris. ..It was your gang done it in 66 I think.
Kouassi is all about winning methinks. Hard as nails.
SPL – watch oot.

Was it a catholic school or one of those Dublin schools ?
I still find it hard to believe you whet to school, I thought you spent your formative years in the stables
Case packed :-)
A visit to Manchester, then next stop Lisbon
Hail Hail
Corkcelt , I hope your wife has had a good birthday.
On the Reporting Scotand news headlines programme , some Celtic fans were interviewed after the game .
The last supporter they showed was a Cork man, resplendent in his hoops , saying it was the best day of his life.

Unfortunately Arsenal have trademarked the Invincible t-shirts so we can’t sell them, I’m told. A sore one for PL no doubt.
Any word on how our host, Paul 67, got on today with his marathon?

Great if not greatest days to be a Tim!
That is a great connection OK.
Visiting at her cell in Glasnevin, it was locked but the light is left on so you can peep through the keyhole & see the art work she left. Just put my phone camera up to the keyhole & took a pic, the painting was perfectly framed by the keyhole. My favourite pic ever.

They will annoy people on here from time to time (myself included) because they are ( mainly) young and idealistic and we are ( mainly) old and grumpy but by jaysus you have to take your hat off to them
