NEIL LENNON can’t imagine players betting on games they are playing in — because the pressure would be INTOLERABLE.
Rangers midfielder Ian Black is facing an SFA charge over alleged betting on matches.
But Celtic boss Lennon says he’s never heard of a player who bet on his own team’s games.
He said: “Since I’ve been in the game, players have bet on football. But the one thing that you can’t do is bet on your own team.
“I think that’s the bottom line because it would open up a whole wasps’ nest in terms of accusations that can be thrown at you.
“It would be ‘What were you doing there? Why did you miss that?’
“I’ve never known a player to bet on his own team.
“I’m not saying that to take the moral high ground, I just think it’s an unwritten rule in the game.
“I’ve not been aware of anyone trying harder because they’re betting on a match they’re involved in.
“I’d never have done it myself. It would prey on your mind — before, during or after the game.
“I’m not aware of any players betting on a game involving a team I was at — though it may have happened and I don’t know about it.
“But if I found any of my players betting on us or betting against us, they’d be in a lot of trouble.
“I’d take a really dim view of it. I don’t understand players doing it. I’m not casting aspersions and nobody has been found guilty — but it’s a serious charge.”
However Lennon admits betting IS rife in the game — and has seen the evidence with his own eyes.
He said: “I’ve played with some players in my time who were heavy gamblers, whether it was football, horses or in casinos.
“The PFA come into all the clubs here and in England and try to make the players aware of their responsibilities.
“It’s like alcohol — it can be intoxicating and can ruin people’s lives.
“I’ve known heavy, heavy gamblers from my time in England.
“I’ve seen one player come in with a plastic bag full of cash after picking it up from the bookies.
“I sat next to him and looked at the bag in amazement. I’m not going to name him but a week later he’d lost the lot again.
“It’s never been an issue for me because I’ve never been a massive gambler.
“I enjoy a wee flutter — everyone has a punt on the football. But once it becomes an irregular thing, the bookies flag it up.
“I don’t think that players saying they don’t know is any defence. I think they do know.
“If you look at other sports, like snooker and cricket, things have been flagged up there as well.”
Lennon is now preparing his side for Wednesday’s Champions League qualifiers against Shakhtar Karagandy. He says even the loss of a goal at Celtic Park on Wednesday won’t affect his mindset.
He added: “My approach is that we need two goals in the 90 minutes.
“Karagandy are organised. I don’t think they’re the most subtle team you’ll come across but they play a way which we know, 5-4-1.
“We watched them against BATE in both games.
“To be honest they had a lot of luck against BATE and I felt they’d plenty of luck against us as well.
“People say you make your own luck, which is fine, but you have to analyse the game in the cold light of day and I thought we were the better team over there.
“They are physical, they worked very hard out of possession and they got the breaks at the right time.
“But there wasn’t a lot for me to really fear.
“If we were to go a goal down and we’ve got to score four, I think we’re capable of doing that.
“People use the Artmedia game as an example, where we were 5-0 down.
“We won 4-0 but it could’ve been five or six — and we weren’t half as bad the other night as we were in Bratislava.
“I thought we did more than enough to get something out of last week’s tie.
“We didn’t and have left it much, much harder than we should have done.
“But it’s not insurmountable. I think it’s retrievable.
“Being at home in a European tie seems to lift the players and they’re going to have to do that.
“We created plenty of chances. The only disappointing thing was the way we lost the first goal.
“We should have dealt with that a lot better.
“Sometimes you have to expect they’ll win a header but we didn’t react to the second ball and the guy has tapped in from about three yards out.
“Our reaction was good, though. Kris was very unlucky with his shot, we’d plenty of possession and plenty of chances.
“Even with their height, I thought we looked a threat at set-pieces. So it’s given me a lot to chew on.
“The players are angry with themselves, they are frustrated and I think that’s a good sign.
“We can’t wait for the game.”
Lennon says the prospect of a humiliating exit at the hands of the Kazakhs wouldn’t be any worse than losing to a bigger name.
He added: “No matter who we played, going out at this stage would be a head-wrecker.
“So I’m not going to be overcritical of Karagandy — they’ve beaten a very good team in Borisov.
“But I don’t want them to be celebrating as though it’s the greatest thing to ever happen to their country on Wednesday.
“I want us to prevail and we’ll be doing everything we can to make that happen.”

On reflection I saw very little yesterday that would indicate that we can break down a packed SK defence. Amido may well be a work in progress but for me the finished article is a long way off. No real threat from him and we don’t need a player to hold up play as most of our midfield do that quite successfully now with square balls or pass backs. Tony Watt didn’t do much either and 8 goals from 30+ appearances does not indicate he can be the prolific striker we need, and yes I know a fair percentage of those appearances were as a sub. With Stokes unlikely to start and Sammi doubtful we are looking somewhat limited upfront. If I were the SK coach watching yesterdays game I would be quietly confident i could nullify Celtic.

Whatever happened to giving a player a chance to settle? Moving clubs and moving countries isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Family to settle, getting used to new colleagues, now training methods, etc. Yet we seem to expect instant success – if we haven’t written the player off before he has even put pen to paper.

sydneytim,
I see the same deficiencies that you do however I believe Lenny when he says he is trying to address them, a striker and midfielder to come in this week.
Chris Sutton scored one goal for Chelsea the season before he joined Celtic. Larsson and Sutton both scored in our first game that season at Tannadice.
The interviewer said to Chris that he’d equalled his goal tally for last season in one game. I thought he was going to hit him.
It’s not all black and white.
SydneyTim on
My gripe is we need to invest at least the money we got from hooper on a goalscorer. To spend 3m on a non goal scoring forward is the reason we don’t have a striker

SydneyTim. This guy has been playing in the Bundesleague which is miles better than the SPL how do you know before hes played a game that he wont be a prolific goal scorer for Celtic.Every transfer has an element of gambling in it some you win some you dont obviously John Park and Lennie see something in the player lets give him a chance remember Gareth Bale played full back for years before he moved up front and started scoring for fun lets welcome our new signings and wish them well a little positivity would help now and again. Oglach 9.53. Was reading through your well reasoned approach and you were winning me over to your point of view that there was very little cause for optimism. Then suddenly at the end you say “you think we can do it”.
I think there is a little bit of you in all of us, we can reason and analyse until we are green in the face (well I wasn’t going to say blue in the face) but at the end we just have a blind belief that we can do it and we will do it.
If Pukki signs give him time…his scoring record is in the German League not the SPFL.
The German league has some of the best defences in the world.
One Henrik Larsson did not have a scoring record that set the dutch tulips on fire and aye he was a disappointment wasn’t he.:-)
Kayal33. We cannot sign anybody to play against Shaktar.
I wish people would stop thinking they are cleaver stating the obvious that we need a striker and a creating midfield player, WE KNOWWWWWWW, so Ffs give the club a chance to get one, and here we go already this morning when a player is ment to be coming for a medical on Monday what are some rockets saying “awe why they buying him, he’s not a striker” I’m swear the amount of negativity in this place from the HUN implants is funny they really can’t hide the fact that they are Huns, oh and you know what if you complain about my post then your a HUN, step up and lift yer skirt, HAIL HAIL, and god bless the Glasgow Celtic.
sydneytim,
I see the same deficiencies that you do however I believe Lenny when he says he is trying to address them, a striker and midfielder to come in this week.
