For anyone interested in the debate about the club’s ownership or the shouts for a new stand Swiss Ramble’s article on Olympique Lyonais’s fiances for 2022/23 adds some interesting info.
Best to support intelligent well-informed football writing so I wont post it on here but theres a free trail before you have to pay the reasonable subscription if you want to make your own judgements from it
OL were the second most successful French club domestically – more points than anyone else bar PSG over a twenty year period. Regular Cl football, they beat Man City in the quarter final and lost to winners Bayern Munich in the semis 3 years ago. A successful trading model brought impressive financial results, they finished a new 60,000 capacity stadium in 2016.
Jean-Michel Aulas sold to John Textor who also parts owns Crystal Palace and two other clubs in 2022, wiki: he has been recognized for his work in the fields of digital media & entertainment with the nickname “Hollywood’s Virtual Reality Guru.” So a business man not a football man.
Lyon find themselves bottom of Ligue Un with one win from 12 games. No European football, no prospect of it for next season, league finishes of 7th, 8th, 4th, 7th int eh last 4 seasons.
They have gross debt of €458, net debt of €383.
This cant all be put at the door of Textor, he bought them after Covid punched huge hole in their finances and after they’d overextended themselves with the stadium.
But as Textor says “If we don’t reach the Champions League, it will be something of a failure.” They have huge debts, a stadium that needs to be paid for, a limit on player trading imposed by the footballing authorities, and importantly, a businessman in charge. Finishing in the CL spots is his ambition.
Even more worrying for the fans is a team who cant win a game in the French league.
There are parallels with Ajax, another team we had been looking to compete with and who also over-reached and are now facing a crisis with their finances. (Although their finances arent underpinned with an asset like a football stadium like Lyon)

On a lighter note, pray allow me to summarise the previous pages.

Like I said, for totally independent analysis sign up to Swiss Ramble. He did an excellent article on Celtic’s accounts not long ago which did include some colour about the big bank balance.

Re the VAR debate – it’s been suggested already but, IMHO, worth much more emphasis.
The individual merit of an award (“Was it a pen?”) …. Is not the main issue.
The main issue is the extent to which one team gets awarded penalties for offences that other teams don’t.
Jersey pulls in particular are a ripe crop.
Evaluation of the main issue can take place independent of subjectivity or bias.
The statistical data tells it all.
One club gets far more penalties and concedes far fewer penalties ….
… THAN ANY OTHER CLUB IN EUROPE

The mere fact that we have continual debates about VAR is an issue in itself.
If there was a widget in yer kitchen or car that was unreliably sketchy it’d get recalled, fixed or snowballed.
I still believe it’s not been intro’d for clarity but to keep fans more engaged and keep codes ‘top of mind’ on confected controversies amid a media scene where tiny attention stretched brains are pulled in all directions: We keep talking about our sport even in the downtimes between games is what I see is happening.
Somewhere in among that big picture, the SFA and currants see it as pochleable and don’t hide it no more.
Trust the Dons are briefing the SFA about the Flying Barbie’s swan dive for a retrospective yellow?

More worry about how hun mouthpiece the Beeb state their case about Celtic
Meantime at Celtic Park,Celtic fans are being excluded for….? Feeding the UEFA corruption! Dissenting genocide, lets call it what it is.
Well done Motherwell fans for creating some atmosphere, unlike St Mirren game we did not get the 82nd minute sweeparound of a singular chant.
Not to worry ban Celtic fans while seeking to welcome 7½ thousand up to their knees in hate and bigotry, ach its good for business.
I would have them back as the same mute handwringers tuts, criticisms, moans, girns and groans can now be heard..
Welcome back to the child stone throwers and prisoners imprisoned against all UN law.no word of that by the apartheid state,
Welcome back to those kidnapped too
Alas the state terrorism will continue and will get its oppressed reaction.
